Mom was cooking in the kitchen. She could hear the girls arguing in the living room. It was the third time this week that the sisters had been arguing over nothing. A few minutes later, Maria rushed into her bedroom angrily and closed the door heavily.
“Come to the kitchen, young lady,” Mom firmly(坚定地) said to Maria in her best mother tone(语气) of voice.
Maria walked into the kitchen and shouted, “I can’t stand living with Felicia another minute. I don’t ever want to talk to her again!”
Mom called out, “Felicia, come to the kitchen right now.”
While Felicia was on her way, Mom put two chairs opposite each other but very close together.
“Maria, you sit here and Felicia you sit there.” The girls sat face to face, with their knees almost touching. “Now you look each other in the eye for five minutes,” Mom ordered.
At first the girls moved their bodies from side to side. Mom said firmly, “You must stay staring at each other for five minutes. Each minute you don’t make eye contact means another minute sitting in the chairs.” They both wanted out, so they had to sit there and look at each other.
Felicia looked at Maria’s pouting(噘嘴的) face while Maria looked at Felicia’s angry face. They each thought the other one looked ridiculous. In fact, they were being ridiculous to fight and be mad at each other over nothing.
Soon Maria couldn’t stand it any longer and began giggling and so did Felicia. They giggled and laughed.
Mom wisely didn’t say anything except, “Okay girls, you can go now.”

China’s biggest solar-powered drone(太阳能无人机), Qimingxing-50 or Morning Star 50, finished its first test flight in September, 2022. The drone was built by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China(AVIC, 中国航空工业集团有限公司)
Drones have been used for quite a few years now. There are different ways of increasing the flying time. However, all these methods become less useful compared with the unlimited(无限的) power provided by the Sun. That’s why researchers have been working to make solar-powered drones that can not only stay in the air for longer but also perform more tasks while in the sky.
In 2018, China tested the first version(版本) of Morning Star, which was 91 feet wide. Made from a special kind of plastic, the drone was so light, weighing only 41 pounds. Compared with it, the Morning Star 50 is much larger and has a wingspan(翼展) of 164 feet.
On September 3, Morning Star 50 took off from an airport in Yulin City in the Shaanxi province in northwest China and landed back 26 minutes later after a smooth flight. Staff told some local reporters that all flight systems worked normally. This is a good start for future flights of the solar-powered drone that could last for many days or even months at a time.
In the US, Airbus has been testing the Zephyr solar-powered drones for the past few years. Its latest version, the Zephyr S, came close to breaking the record for the longest flight. It stayed in the air for 64 days. Unluckily, the drone fell onto the ground only a few hours before it would have set a new record.

A.To compare different drones. | B.To report a drone’s test flight. |
C.To discuss drones’ future. | D.To tell the importance of drones. |
The common problem of myopia (近视) among students has been a big challenge for China to deal with for many years. According to reports, about 35.6 percent of primary school students and nearly 81 percent of senior high school students are nearsighted (近视的) in China.
Considering this background, Wantang Primary School in Yunnan province really stands out. This is because none of the students at this school suffer from myopia. Parents, teachers and eye experts began discussing whether the school’s experience can be used to tackle the rising level of myopia across China.
Yang Chenhao is a doctor at the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University. He said that while the school is a special case, some of its methods are highly worth learning, such as keeping children away from mobile phones and getting them outdoors more often.
Yang Qingyi is a teacher at the school, which has 536 students. He said that all children are required to go outside during class breaks. “Even for quiet kids, we encourage them to take a walk outside,” he said. When the three sports teachers there are busy, teachers of other subjects will work as trainers to teach basketball and table tennis.
“If there is one piece of advice that we can share on achieving zero myopia, I would say large amounts of outdoor activities,” said Sun Fubiao, the primary school’s headmaster. Sun said that a number of his students’ parents are working in other areas, so the school has fixed six public phones while not allowing use of personal mobile phones.
“In teacher-parent WeChat groups, we often remind parents to pay attention to kids’ eye health when they are at home for weekends or vacations,” he added.
