One day, we were playing basketball after lunch. Abby was so distracted by her worries _______ she didn’t even notice the ball hurtling toward her.

“Ow!” She cried as the ball _______ her in the side of the face.

“I’m so sorry,” said Luke. “I thought you saw it coming!”

“It’s OK. My mouth is going to be hurting like crazy soon anyway.”

“How come?” Luke asked.

“I am going to get braces next week,” Abby said. “I’m so worried. I can’t think about _______ else.”

“My dad has this trick that helps with worrying,” I said. “He has me name the specific things I’m _______ about.”

I continued, “So if you write down the things you worry about, maybe you can _______ do something about them. I’ll help you make a list.”

That afternoon, we made a very clear list of Abby’s worries:

1 Braces will make me _______ strange.

2 Everyone will play _______ joke on me.

3 I will never be able to eat popcorn or sticky candies again.

4 Because of the braces, I’ll spend _______ life in pain.

_______ Abby’s worries list wasn’t exactly funny, we still decided to describe it with silly cartoon drawings, and we couldn’t stop laughing.

Abby had the world’s best idea. “How about _______ my worry list into a survey? We can ask kids with braces _______ they’ve experienced the things on my list.”

The next day we did the survey, and everyone seemed _______ to take part in it.

Then we discovered that everyone agreed it _______ a few days to get used to their new look. Not being able to eat stuff that gets stuck in braces, but ice cream or ice pops can still _______. Whatever, it’s really not that big of a deal.

Book Reviews of the Week

Little and Largeis a book about two animals. One is a small ant, the other is a big pig. They look very different, but in fact they're good friends and get along really well. This is a fun book, and all young children should enjoy it.

When We Were Youngis a book about teenagers and their lives. Sound interesting? No, I think this book is very boring. In fact, I don't feel like finishing it. I don't like any of the characters.

Glove Storyis a great love story. It starts when a man finds a woman's glove on a train. He wants to find out whose glove it is. Then he meets a few interesting people on the train as he does so.

A New Youisn't a story book. It was written by a doctor, and it tells people how they can take good care of their health. There is some useful advice here about how to eat right, how to exercise, and more. It's a great book to have around.

I don't agree with you about, I think that it is really good. I am 16 years old, and I like reading books about people who are my age. Many of the things in this story are the same as what I deal with in my life. Maybe you should read to the end. You might have a different idea about the book.

Workout clothes? Check. Water bottle? Check. Breakfast? Um …It's something that has been hotly debated by early morning gym-goers for years. And now a study has finally found out whether to exercise before or after breakfast.

Researchers analyzed the energy spending of 12 healthy, active men aged 20 to 26. Each of them completed three different tests: eating a breakfast of oats(燕麦) and milk and then resting, eating the same breakfast 2 hours before cycling for 1 hour, and doing the same 1 hour of exercise without having breakfast. The study showed that when the men didn't have breakfast, they had a greater calorie deficit(不足) throughout the day of about 150 calories on average, showing that fast exercise is the best for weight loss.

“These results suggest that for healthy young men, a short-term energy deficit may be more easily achieved if they exercise without breakfast,” the study's authors said.

Here's how it works: When you do fast exercise, your body doesn't have ready energy from food, so it draws from other sources, like stored body fat, which makes your exercise more effective at burning fat and helping you lose weight. Also, exercising in a fast state keeps your insulin(胰岛素) level low, allowing your body to produce more growth hormone(荷尔蒙激素), which also burns fat.

When insulin is increased - as is the case after you eat-your body will be in a state of wanting to store fat, not burn it. It doesn't matter whether you exercise like a mad man after a meal, because you won't be able to burn body fat until insulin levels drop.

41. Which topic has been hotly debated by early morning gym-goers?
A.What food they should eat for breakfast.
B.Whether to eat before or after they exercise.
C.What equipment they should bring to the gym.
D.Whether to exercise in the morning or at night.
42. What do we know about the three tests?
A.Twelve people took part in them.
B.All the people in the tests ate breakfast.
C.Twelve people were divided into three groups.
D.They were done by twelve researchers from the US.
43. What does the underlined phrase “fast exercise" refer to?
A.One does light exercise in a fast way.
B.One works out on an empty stomach.
C.One exercises fast and long after a meal.
D.One works out in the morning regularly.
44. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Exercising without food is bad for our health.
B.The level of insulin varies from person to person.
C.Unless insulin drops, exercise can't burn body fat.
D.High level of insulin can produce more growth hormone.
45. Where can we see the passage?
A.In a food magazine.
B.In the Health Weekly.
C.In a travel guidebook.
D.On a school noticeboard.

I want to share with you a story from 28 years ago. My dad was a used car salesman. Every Thursday night, he would head off to Shreveport, LA for an auction (拍卖会). Most of the time, I drove a car over there for him so he could sell it at the auction.

Jane Goodall’s love for animals started from her childhood.     61     she was a girl, she loved to watch birds and insects. She took notes about how they acted. She dreamed about going to Africa and doing     62     same thing there.
