Before you learned how to walk or talk, you learned how to snack. It started as a handful of Cheerios (面包圈) on your high chair tray (高脚椅), then some Goldfish Cookies after school. In fact, many teens snack as often as four times a day.
The top snack picks for teens are factory made desserts, salty snacks, candies, and fruit drinks. While unprocessed food like strawberries or cheese can give you what your body needs. Those aren’t the foods that are the easiest to get your hands on. Have you looked at the vending machine (投币式自动售货机) or local convenience store recently? They’re not exactly filled with oranges or hard boiled eggs.
One reason: There’s less money to be made on real food, so companies have invented “snack food”, which are cheaper to make and take years to go bad.
Still, you buy them anyway. It’s hard not to, thanks to billions of dollars spent on snack-food marketing. You can see ads for these between-meal snacks everywhere— whether they’re TV ads or ads on a phone app. “Everywhere you go, you see ads to snack on the wrong kinds of foods.” says Margo Wootan. “The reason is simpler: The more you eat. the more money food companies make.”
EATING WRONG FOOD
You love chips and cookies. But they’re full of man-made materials and lack of nutrients (营养素) you need like iron.
Do it right: Junky snacks are OK sometimes, but always include fruit or vegetables with every meal or snacks.
REDUCING PROTEIN
Your store’s snack shelf is filled with things that are heavy on fat hut light on protein (蛋白质), a nutrient that’s especially filling. So you end up eating more, but still feeling unsatisfied.
Do it right: Stay satisfied between meals by adding a healthy protein to your snacks, like a hard-boiled egg or cheese.

We all know that eating junk food can make us fat. However, a new study suggests that it can do more than that-it can also make us lazy.
In the study, researchers divided 32 rats into two groups. In the first experiment, the first group was fed a diet of healthy food such as corn and fish, while the second was given a diet rich in sugar and fat, namely “junk food”.
Within three months, the rats in the second group were already much fatter than those on the healthy diet. And when researchers trained the rats to do simple tasks, they found even more differences between the two groups other than weight.
During the task—pushing a lever to receive a prize of sugar water—the rats on the junk food diet were found to be less willing to move, and they took longer breaks between each push than the fit rats did.
“It is as if the rat is thinking ‘This is too much work’,” said the leader of the study.
According to researchers, these differences suggest that junk food changed the chemistry in the rats’ brains.
The experiments didn’t end there. After six months, researchers began the second experiment. The rats’ diets were changed, and the overweight rats were given a healthy diet for nine days. However, this didn’t help reduce their weight or improve their ability to perform tasks. It means the effects of their junk food diet lasted for long. “There’s no quick way to reduce the harm,” researchers said.
For a long time, we’ve believed that people become fat because they are lazy. But this study has shown that the opposite is true as well. Being lazy and getting fat can go hand in hand.
So, if you always feel tired, and not willing to get up from your chair, it could be that you’ve been studying too hard. But you should also pay attention to your diet.

We know how good it will feel in the morning after we get some rest. But do you know that sleep is also very important to animals? Animals also need sleep after they work hard.
Some animals sleep in the sea. Fish have no eyelids (眼睑), so they sleep with their eyes open! Otters sleep in seaweed (海草) on top of the sea. The seaweed keeps the otters from moving along. Most sharks keep swimming while they sleep. Some fish find a little hole in the coral (珊瑚) and hide so that they can sleep. The clown fish turns on its side to sleep at the bottom of the sea.
Some animals sleep under the ground! When it’s hot, many frogs sleep in a hole because they want to avoid the heat. Some frogs spend the whole summer in their holes. Groundhogs live in holes in the ground, so they also sleep underground. Foxes sometimes steal a groundhog’s home and use it as their own home.
What about animals that live above the ground? Birds sleep in their nests or in trees. A bird’s claws (爪子) close when they sleep. This helps them stay in the tree. Bats sleep upside down for twenty hours a day!
No matter what kind of animal you are, you need your sleep to stay in good health.

What does that mean? If you’re a12-year-old girl. You’re not a sports star, but you’ re quite healthy. Your mom was the same kind of kid when she was your age. Now imagine we could have a 500-meter race between you and your mom from 30 years ago. Was it cool? The study shows your mom would run faster than you in the race by 90 seconds. That’s a lot. It was the same for boys. An average (普通的) boy from 30 years ago would beat an average boy today.
The scientists think there are some reasons for the big fall in health. First, nowadays too many kids are overweight (超重). That makes it harder for them to run fast. Second, kids today don’t get enough exercise. Doctors say kids should get at least 60 minutes of exercise a day. That’s why it is important for schools to have P. E. classes.
So what should kids do? If you don’t want your mom and dad to think they are faster than you, don’t spend a lot of time playing games, watching TV or movies online. Instead, try to do some things and it will help to get you up and to move.
