Animals are our friends. Sometimes they make trouble, but sometimes they can help us. And they hope to live a happy life, too. Here are two real stories from our readers.
The first story is from Ray. "My cat, Tiger, hates it when I use my iPad because it takes my attention away from him. One year, I had a fall at home and was on the floor for 16 hours. During this time, I was unable to move and couldn't get to the phone to call for help. Tiger stayed by my side until he disappeared under my bed. 'What's he up to?' I wondered. To my surprise, he started to push something towards me. It was my iPad, which I didn't realize had fallen off the bed and onto the floor. He probably didn't know what it was, but he knew that it made me happy. Thanks to Tiger, I was able to communicate with my friend, Becky, who then told my doctor."
The second story is from Colin. "Years ago, my friend Julius saved a bird-a wild 'Mom' cockatoo(鹦鹉)from the side of the road and kept it as a pet in a big cage(笼子). It lost one of her wings, so she was unable to return to the wild. Soon, two wild cockatoos came visiting and one 'Dad' bird wanted to find his way into the cage. The 'Mom' cockatoo in the cage was soon expecting. But as she couldn't fly, 'Dad' cockatoo built a home in the tree, keeping off everyone who got close to 'Mom' cockatoo. 'Baby' cockatoo would spend his days flying off with his dad, leaving his mom behind. She would sit and wait until they returned home each afternoon. The family stayed together happily."
After reading the stories, don’t you think we should get along well with animals? No matter they are our pets or live in the wild, they have their feelings. We should respect every life in the world.

They said, “That looks like Tom Rogers, and yet it can’t be, for he is so clean.”
After a while, his mother looked at him, and seeing that his face was so clean, she thought that her own face was dirty and at once she washed it at once.
The father soon came home from his work, and seeing his wife and his son so clean, he thought that his face was dirty and so he followed their example.
Father, mother, and son being clean, the mother began to think that the room looked dirty, so she went down on her knees and scrubbed (用力擦洗) the floor clean.
A woman lived next door. Seeing so great a change in her neighbours, she though that her face and her room were very dirty, so she, too, quickly set about cleaning them.
This story shows how two houses and their families were made tidy and comfortable, simply by the example of the clean face of one ragged school boy.

My lunch was almost the same every day: an egg sandwich(三明治), some chips, an apple or a banana, and a cookie. The problem was that I never liked eggs. So I always gave my sandwich to one of my classmates. His family was poor, and he never had enough to eat. Then it would be difficult for me to concentrate in class because I was hungry. So my grades were not great.
I never told my mother about this because I didn’t want to make more work for her. But one day, when I was about ten, I had an idea. That evening I told my mother, “You know, I don’t really like eggs. Can I make my sandwich from now on?” My mother answered, “Of course. You can make your sandwich and you can also help me make all the other sandwiches.” From this experience I learned that if you really want something, it’s OK to ask for it. 【推荐1】Like humans, sometimes animals also need to communicate (沟通) with each other. They communicate to tell each other where food is or to show how they feel. In fact, there are many ways for animals to do that.
The first and most usual way is by using sound. For example, if the monkey sees a snake, it’ll give an alarm call for all the other monkeys to climb onto the trees. It means they’re in danger. Another example is the dolphin (海豚). Each dolphin has a special whistle (口哨声). This is similar to calling someone by his or her name. Scientists even think dolphins will whistle to talk to each other about a situation or the day’s events.
A second way animals communicate is through body language. For example, a pet dog will keep moving its tail when it is happy or excited. A scared cat will stand with its back high. Bees dance in patterns to tell other bees where and how far food is.
Another kind of animal communication is touch. For example, giraffes will wrap their necks together if they like each other. Horses touch their noses together as a sign that they are comfortable with another horse. Some monkeys will touch their hands together to say “Hello”.
Next time you may watch carefully how two animals are communicating with each other when you meet them. It must be great fun.

That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie. She agreed happily. During the dinner, we talked so much in the restaurant that we missed the movie. As we arrived at her house later, she said, “I’ll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you.” I agreed.
A few days later, my mother died. It happened so suddenly that I didn’t have a chance to do anything for her. Some time later, I received a letter with a copy of a restaurant receipt from the same restaurant. The letter said: “I paid this bill in advance(提前). I wasn’t sure that I could be there; but I paid for two plates—one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me.”
“I love you, son.”
My eyes were full of tears at that moment. I understood the importance of saying in time: “I love you,” and to give our loved ones the time that they deserve(值得). 【推荐2】Have you ever thought about how much water you use in a day?
Starting February 1st, each person in Cape Town, South Africa received a daily supply of 13.2 gallons of water which is only enough for a 10-minute shower!
This restriction(限制) was introduced in preparation for April 22nd, also known as Day Zero, on which the city will turn off all municipal( 市 政 ) water taps because of the overuse of fresh water these years.
Over the past three years, Cape Town has suffered from a dangerous drought( 干旱). That, along with a growing population of four million people, has caused water-supply drop strongly. As of November 2017, the water level in their largest water reservoir( 水库) had dropped to 28% from 102.9% in 2014. That amount is expected to come down to 13.5% by April 22, 2018. What’s worse, the last 10% of the reservoir’s levels are not potable (safe to drink) because of the dirt at the bottom.
Firstly, researchers thought the cause of the drought was El Niño. Cape Town could become the first ever major city to run out of water. The government has called on people to conserve the little water they have left by way of prevention, including stopping car washing and filling up swimming pools. They are asking the public to cut showers to two minutes and reuse bathing water to flush the toilet.
When Cape Town reaches Day Zero, there will be 200 water stations scattered across the town for people to receive their daily supply of 6.6 gallons. Armed guards will stand by to make sure there is no violence or theft.
The water shortage has already influenced all parts of Cape Town. People’s lives are being affected, with those in the tourism industry and businesses like car washing, seeing no chance to make a living. The relationship between people also becomes worse as neighbors are encouraged to report each other for water waste and the government plans to collect a drought tax as they are losing tax money because of the low water use.
