Primary school children in the UK have little choice over what they eat for lunch. Either their parents pack their lunchbox, or they choose from only one or two options(选择,选项)on a hot dinner menu. However, secondary schools let students make their own meal choices freely.
In the past, this has led to problems. There is a 2004 survey called School Meals in Secondary Schools in England. It showed that many schools offered unhealthy menus. For example, on four or five days of the week, 76 percent of schools served chips and other potatoes cooked in oil, while 86 percent served high fat meals like burgers and fried chicken. And when offered such dishes, most students were picking them:48 percent chose high fat main dishes; 48 percent chose chips or similar and 24 percent chose cakes or muffins(松饼). Fruit, fruit juice, vegetables and salads were the least popular choices.
In his 2005 television series Jamie’s School Diners, famous chef Jamie Oliver began working with school cooks on providing more healthy meals. At first, many students and parents were against the idea. But the tide began to turn and Jamie’s effort has led to a general improvement in nutritional standards(营养标准)for school meals.
More recently, online systems like “Parent Pay” give parents more control over what their children are eating at school. They can set daily spending limits and see exactly what their kids are buying each day.

【推荐2】Some people ski (滑雪) down mountains. Others climb huge rocks or take photos of dangerous animals. Why do people enjoy risky activities like these?
Some people take risks simply because it makes them feel good. Dr. Marvin says that this kind of people are always looking for change and excitement. When people do something new or risky, a chemical (化学物质) in the brain creates a pleasant feeling. They love this feeling and want to experience it as often as possible. Other people don't take risks for the feeling of excitement but to achieve a goal (目标). For example, Mike Fay went on a dangerous 2,000-mile special journey in central Africa. He worked to help save the wildlife there. Fay's expeditions helped create 13 national parks.
For other people, such as extreme athletes (极限运动员), taking risks is part of their job. Dr. Shane says extreme athletes see the world differently. In a dangerous activity, most people probably do not feel in control. Extreme athletes are different; they feel in control in dangerous situations. The danger can even help them. For example, skier Daron Tahlves says that being afraid makes him try harder to succeed.
Most of us are not extreme athletes or explorers. However, we still take risks in our lives, such as speaking in front of a large group of people, buying a house, leaving a job or starting a business. What kind of risk-taker are you?

This hasn’t quite happened in real life. But the world is already experiencing a new age of using RFID technology.
An RFID tag with a small chip can be fixed in a product, under your pet’s skin(皮肤), even under your own skin. Some RFID tags have no energy source because they do not need it. The energy comes from a scanning device(扫描装置), which sends out energy and starts up the tag immediately.
Such a tag carries information to that object, and the information can be renewed. Already, RFID technology is used for recognizing(识别) each car or truck on the road and it might appear in your passport. Doctors may put a small chip under the skin to get a patient’s medical records. At a nightclub in Paris or in New York the same chip might get you to pay for the bill with the wave of an arm.
Take a step back: 10 or 12 years ago, you would have heard about the coming age of computing. One example always seemed to surface: Your refrigerator would know when you needed to buy more milk. The idea was that computer chips could be put everywhere and send information in a smart network that would make life simpler.
RFID tags are a small part of this situation. “The world is going to be a connected set of personal small devices.” predicts Dr. J. Reich. But some people are nervous about the possibilities of such technology. It goes too far tracking(跟踪)school kids through RFID tags, they say.
When Marconi invented radio, he thought it would be used for ship-to-shore communication, not for pop music. Who knows how RFID and other technologies will be used in the future. Here’s a wild guess: Not for buying milk.

【推荐3】From red apples to yellow bananas, fruit comes in many different colors. Why do different kinds of fruit have so many colors?
According to Lu Wei from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, fruit colors come from their different pigments (色素). Different amounts (数量) of pigments, depending on the fruit’s environment, cause the fruit to turn a certain color.
To find out how environment influences fruit colors, Chinese scientists studied more than 280 different fruit colors, including white, red, blue, purple and black.
They found that red fruit usually grow in cooler places. Blue and purple fruit mostly grows in warm places. These fruits often grow a lot in just one area. The scientists also found that the closer the fruit is to the equator (赤道), the darker its color will be.
Animals have also had an influence on fruit colors. Animals eat fruit and drop the seeds (种子) in other places later. This helps the fruit spread and grow in different places. So, in order to interest animals, some fruit develops colors that are easy for animals to see. For example, birds can see red more easily than humans can. So there are more red fruit in areas where birds live.
