These years some pandas from China are taking their special vacations in some other countries. They will get back home at the planned time. But this May, two pandas living in Canada had to get back to China before their vacation really ended.
The two pandas were happy to live in the Calgary Zoo in Canada, but when COVID-19 broke out (爆发), there was problem—it was difficult for the zoo to get them enough bamboo (竹子).
Er Shun and Da Mao arrived in the Calgary Zoo in 2018 after spending five years in their first home—the Toronto Zoo. They were to live in the Calgary Zoo until (直到) 2023. Over the difficult times, there were no flights from China to Canada, so bamboo from China couldn’t get to Canada by plane. The Calgary zoo tried to get bamboo from the U.S to feed the two pandas, but they said the pandas didn’t like to eat it at all. In the end, they had to ask China for help and decided to let the pandas go back home early.
The two cute pandas were the stars in the Calgary Zoo. People in Canada liked them very much. Many of them weren’t happy to see the animals leave. But in China the pandas can get enough bamboo to eat. The Calgary Zoo had to do this.

Here is an experiment(实验)to see how ants can organize some clever teamwork.
1. First you need some ants. You may have to wait until the summer to find them on roads around your home. | 2. When you have found an ant, put a thin slice of fruit in front of it. It may eat some of it or carry bits away. | 3. Check the fruit after an hour. Have other ants been attracted to it? If so, what are they doing? | 4. When there are lots of ants, move the fruit to a new position. What do the ants do? |
What’s going on?
You can see one of the best examples of insect teamwork by watching ants. If one ant finds food, it leads others there to eat it, too. They follow each other by making long trails(踪迹). The ants go back and forth collecting food, to take back to their nest. When you move the fruit, the ants will still find it. But, instead of making a new direct route(路线)to the food, they will follow each other through their old trail route.
1. To do this experiment, the first step is to put a slice of fruit in front of an ant.2. If one ant finds food, he will wait until the other ants come.
3. When the fruit is moved to a new position, the ants will still follow the old route.
4. The experiment is successfully done in the lab.
5. From the passage we may infer the ant is the animal that is willing to share.
【推荐2】Ants are everywhere. They live in forests, fields, deserts and cities, all over the Earth. But how much do you know about them?
Ants are social animals. They live and work in groups. They always build nests, find food, and raise babies together. They have their own colonies (群体). Ant colonies are large or small, from just a few ones to millions!
Usually, ants are divided into (被分成) several different classes (等级) such as queens, workers, males and so on. Queens are females and they eat more as larvae (幼虫). Queen ants are usually the biggest ants in colonies. They lay all the eggs. A queen ant can live for several tens of years. Males have wings and they never help with the chores. They can only live for a few weeks. Workers are females and they eat less as larvae. Workers do all the “housework” from building and cleaning the nest to collecting food. Workers are wingless and usually live for several months.
Ants are also clever architects. They can build their homes in different places. You may find their nests under rocks or in the trees. What’s more, the nests that they build are perfect for ant larvae to grow up. One ant by itself cannot do much harm to many larger animals. But they can beat much bigger and stronger enemies in large groups. By acting together, ants can even protect their colonies against animals. If you are lucky enough, you may see such a wonderful fight!
Ants are successful in the animal world. But have you learned the secret behind their success?

Many people think I am lazy, but it’s not true. I sleep so much because I have a strange (奇怪的) diet. As you can see, I only eat eucalyptus (桉树) leaves. Eucalyptus leaves are full of water. I can eat more than 0.5 kg of these leaves each day and I don’t often drink. My name means “no drink” in an Australian language. But there is one big problem: Eucalyptus leaves are not delicious and they are low in calories (卡路里). I get very little energy from them. Think about eating salad all day, you would look as sleepy as I do!
What’s more, the leaves are highly toxic! If other animals eat them, they will die. Luckily, I have a strong digestive system (消化系统). It works very hard to break down the toxins. So tiring! To save energy, I sleep nearly all day long. Now you know why I spend so much time in my tree. Don’t call me lazy any more.

Robot driving coaches “nicer” than real ones
Students at a driving school in Zhenjiang, East China’s Jiangsu Province say robotic coaches have taken away some of the stress when practicing. The robotic coach which provides automatic voice navigation (自动语音导航), gives learners gentle voice orders. “I’m nervous when a real coach sits beside me. This robot is nicer. Even if I do something wrong, the robot will continue to encourage me, instead of blaming me.” A student of the driving school told China Daily. The robot can be set to a teaching mode or stimulated test mode. It will tell drivers whether they’ve passed the test or not. “The robot will remind learners to turn on their left turn signal as the car approaches a left turn. If it is about 20 centimeters away from an obstacle, the car will automatically stop.” said a coach at the driving school. But the school doesn’t plan to cut the number of human coaches.
Some netizens wondered if robot coaches could be as good as real ones. “No robot coach would help me step on the brakes (刹车) if I were accidentally to drive into a tree.” A netizen said.

Let's look at the words about animals and plants. Most expressions in Chinese about dog, for example, a homeless dog, a mad dog and a dog catching a mouse, have negative meanings. But in western countries, dogs are thought to be honest and good friends of humans. In English, people use the dog to describe positive actions. For example, You are a lucky dog means you are a lucky person. And every dog has its day means each person has good luck sometimes. To describe a person's serious illness, they say sick as a dog. The word dog-tired means very tired. However, Chinese love cats very much. But in western culture, cat is often used to describe a woman who is cruel. The rose is regarded as a symbol of love in both China and some western countries. People think the rose means love, peace, courage and friendship. That may seem a strange thing to say it. But touching things can help you to see them better. Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass is. When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it. With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too. You can even feel sounds against your skin. Have you ever wanted to know why some people like very loud music? They must like to feel the sounds of music.
All children soon learn what “Don’t touch!” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things we might buy: food, clothes. To see something well, we have to touch it. The bottoms of our feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk on warm sand, cool grass or a hard floor. All feel different under your feet.
There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to feel them!
Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. Their signs say, “Do touch!” There you can feel everything on show.
If you want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you will really see!

These involuntary actions are a response(反应)to a stimulus(刺激). When we do these things, our body is trying to protect itself. If an irritant(刺激物)such as pollen(花粉)from plants gets into our nose or nasal passages(鼻腔通道),our body sneezes to get it out. If we breathe in dust, our body coughs to remove it from our lungs(肺)or windpipe. We blink in order to keep our eyes clean and moist(湿润)and to prevent dust and other things from staying on them. A yawn is our body's way of making us put more oxygen into our bloodstream.
. These involuntary movements happen because our brain is giving out signals. There is a system of nerves(神经)called the central nervous system, that covers our entire body: from the brain, down the spinal cord(脊髓)inside our spinal column (the bones that do down our back,to the tips of our fingers and toes. When our body parts sense certain things, like a mosquito蚊子)bite, a message is sent to our brain. Then the brain sends a message back to itch(发痒).
Without these reflex actions, we would not live very long.

It's holiday time, while it's the great time to make some money. Some US teenagers use their imagination and skills to get more money.
New York tennis player Antonio Rivera, 15, serves as a hitter or practice partner for players who want to improve their skills. "You might think, 'why would a parent want to hire (雇佣) me when there are more professional tennis teachers'?" Rivera said. "But as a teen, I can offer my lessons for less money and give a more personal experience."
Many teens turn their extracurricular (课外的) activities into money-making businesses. "If you're good at something—sports, arts, math, science, English, computer software or languages, you can trade that for money," Rivera said.
Harlan Feet, 17, of New York, is a good example. He makes money by getting rid of (消除) computer viruses (病毒) and maintaining (维护) social media accounts on sites like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. He also takes photos of products and posts them online for people who sell goods through online stores.
"Today's kids have grown up with skills that many adults don't like to spend time learning," said Feet, laughing. "That just means money for me." For example, he's found a way to make money by helping families scan (扫描) old photos and save digital versions (数字版本) of the pictures.
If you have artistic skills, there's a market for you, too. Texan Shyla Boehm, 17, makes and sells handmade things such as small bags and greeting cards. Boehm has set up a shop online and offers her skills online.
