One way that scientists learn about people is by studying (研究) animals. In this experiment (实验), the scientists are studying the relationship between diet and health.
They are studying the relationship between the amount (数量) of food the mice eat and their health. The mice are in three groups. All three groups are receiving the same healthy food. The first group is eating one cup of food each day, the second group is eating two cups, and the third group is eating three cups.
After three years, the healthiest group is the one that is only eating one cup of food each day. The mice in this group are a little thinner. But they are more active. Most of the day, they are running, playing with one another. Also, they are living longer. Mice usually live for two years. Most of the mice in this group are still alive (活的) after three years.
The second group of mice is healthy, too. They are active, but not as active as the thinner mice. They are only living about two years.
The last group of mice is receiving more food than the other two groups. Most of the day, these mice are eating or sleeping. They are not very active. These mice are living longer than the scientists thought—about a year and a half. But they are not healthy. They are sick more often than the other two groups.

Chris Bailey, a popular blogger (博客作者), tried this out. Here is what he has found.
First, you lose weight (体重) faster. Yeah, you do! You don’t have to exercise but just keep away from drinks for 9 days. It is the same as running for 8 kilometers a day! So write down your resolution (决心) on a piece of paper and put it on the wall. And you will see the result soon.
Sometimes when you have to stay up late for a test, a cup of tea or coffee is usually put at the side of your desk. But do you know 75 to 85 percent of your brain (大脑) is water? Nothing else! Just by drinking water, your brain can work efficiently (有效地). You may remember things quickly and well.
What’s more, water washes out something bad in your body. So drinking enough water can stop you from getting old quickly. If you want to look young and beautiful as long as possible, drink a glass of water right now! Keep on doing it for longer, and you will be surprised to touch your soft and clean skin (皮肤).
Lastly, you save money! How much money do coffee and juice cost you every week? The price of water is much lower than that of other drinks. Drink 5 glasses of water every day or visit doctors? Think about it!
So, what are you waiting for?

Such electronic products make the brain more active, and then influence people's sleep. But according to a latest survey, more than 90% of Americans usually use a computer or some other kinds of electronic products in the hour before bed.
Researchers found that man-made light from some electronic products at night might reduce the levels of the brain chemicals that help sleep. The researchers showed that sitting in the light from tablets clearly reduced the levels of the chemicals which manage our body clocks and play a great role in the sleep cycle.
In the study, the researchers let volunteers read, play games and watch movies on a tablet for different time while measuring how much light their eyes received. They found that sitting for two hours before a bright tablet at night reduced the levels of the chemicals by about 22%.
Studies of students using computers at night have got the similar results. And researchers said that might not only cause sleeplessness, but also increase the risk of obesity(肥胖症), diabetes(糖尿病) and other diseases.
To be on the safe side, the researchers advise us to use computers less before bed, or turn down our screens low.

Chinese people started to use hand fans over 2,000 years ago. The fans came in different shapes, such as round and square. They were also made from all kinds of materials (材料). Palm leaf (棕榈叶) fans were cheap and easy to make. Feather fans showed the owner’s high status (地位). Sandalwood (檀香) fans could send out a sweet smell.
Later, hand fans became far more than just something that could cool you down. They developed into artworks, in which tuanshan and zheshan were the most common.
In the shape of a full moon, tuanshan was usually made of silk. They had beautiful embroidery (刺绣) of birds and flowers on them. Women liked to use them very much. Poets in ancient China often compared a woman’s life to tuanshan, Nalan Xingde wrote during the Qing Dynasty, “If only life were as beautiful as when we first met, why should the autumn wind bother to pity deserted painted fans?”
However, men, especially the literati (文人), used zheshan. The literati liked them because zheshan were usually made of paper and they could paint and write something on them. It was a way for them to show off their talents in literature (文学), painting and calligraphy (书法). In fact, almost anything can be painted on zheshan.
Today, Chinese people still use these fans. So, the next time you use a fan, you may think of the stories behind it.

In October, job-hunting website Zhaopin.com organized a report after surveying people who work in more than 800 different jobs in major Chinese cities. These jobs include early childhood educator, fitness trainer and makeup artist(化妆师). Most of the jobs pay well, with one in three workers earning more than 8,000 yuan a month. The top-paying job is veterinarian(宠物医生). About 29 percent of these animal doctors earn over 20.00yuan per month.
These workers’ educational background is also important. Over 60 percent of the surveyed workers have a college degree(学位) or above, the report says.
Most of the workers said they chose their jobs out of love and interest in the area. Many of the jobs are no longer specific to one gender (性别). For example, the report found that one-third of childcare workers are men. These positions used to be filled almost only by women.
Many of these jobs are in the service industry(产业). Economic (经济师) development means people have more money to spend and are in greater need of high-quality services, China News Service noted.
For example, more people have started to raise pets. Pet owners will spend over 5,000 yuan per pet this year, an increase of 15 percent from 2017, Xinhua reported. The growing need for animal care, therefore, has encouraged more people to become veterinarians.

C.People make more money these days than before. |
A.Lawyer. | B.Makeup artist. | C.Veterinarian. |
A.Because people need more high-quality services. |
B.Because they require fewer skills and less knowledge. |

Use your money wisely
Most teenagers earn money for everyday use, or because they are saving up for something. So when they receive their money, they must first decide what they want to do with it. However, try to avoid the temptation (诱惑) to spend it all in one go (一口气)! Remember: Money takes a long time to earn, but it goes very quickly.
Bank your savings
The money you don’t need can be saved at home or in a bank. If you want to save your money at home, get yourself a piggy bank or something else to keep your money in. The other choice is to save your money in a bank. One of the advantages is that you can earn interest (利息) on it.
Use the money to make money
Rather than saving your money at home or in a bank, you can use the money you earn to invest (投资) in things to make more money. For example, if you are selling something around your neighborhood, you could pay someone else to sell your things in their neighborhood. This way, by spending a little, you can make a lot.

Lots of people do. And now researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island think they know why. They found that one-half of the brain “remains more awake” than the other half when people are trying to sleep in a new place.
The findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers said many people report they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside their home. They call it “first-night influence”. In Japan they say, “If you change your bed, you can’t sleep,” said Yuka Sasaki, one of the report’s writers. “You don’t sleep very well in a new place. We all know about it.”
The researchers measured brain waves (测量脑波) for 35 volunteers over two nights in a laboratory. The two nights were a week apart (间隔). They found during the first night the left half of the brain was more active than the right half. This was during the first deep-sleep period, the researchers said.
Sasaki said a lot of questions remain.
Researchers did not keep measuring brain waves all night long. So, they don’t know if the left half keeps “watch” all night, or whether it “works in shifts (轮换) with the right half later in the night”. They also do not know why the brain activity, at least during the first period of deep sleep, is always on the left half.
For some, this research may be calming. It is good to know that our brain is “looking out for us” in a new place. But it may not help with sleep. That brain activity, at least according to this new research; makes it harder to get the people to have a good rest when they need to wake up in the morning.
1. How many times did the researchers measure brain waves for 35 volunteers?A.Once. | B.Twice. | C.Three times. | D.Four times. |
A.the brain waves remained the same | B.the brain activity helped with sleep |
C.the right half of the brain kept “watch” | D.the left half of the brain was more active |

The words and pronunciations used by young people in UK can be different to those used by grown-ups Living in a multicultural(多元文化的) society has an effect on language, especially on young people, whose friends are often from a mix of backgrounds. TV and music also have big influence on the language of the young. Often UK singers sing in American accents (口音) without realizing.
Young British people use lots of language that you usually can’t find in most dictionaries. These informal words and expressions are known as ‘slang’. It is not possible ti make a complete list of modern British slang. By the time people finish the list, it would be out of date! New words come and go like fashions. However, here are a few examples:
Safe, sorted, sound, cool or wicked all mean “That’s good” or “I understand”.
People seldom use different tag question like … isn’t it?, can’t you? or don’t they?, they use innit.
No longer say very, really or completely, people use well.
Whatever means I don’t care.
’He’s fine‘ or ‘He’s fit’ both mean ‘He looks good’. Fine and fit can describe a boy or a girl.
Not everybody uses slang and not everybody likes it. A school in Sheffield, in the north of England, recently stopped its pupils using slang words such as hiya(hello), cheers and ta (both mean thank you). The head teacher says that if young people learn to speak ‘correctly’ this will help them get a place at university and a good job.
When British people use language like this, it’s no surprise that some students say they can’t understand native(本土的) speakers. But perhaps learners don’t need to worry about communicating with native speakers so much. Research shows that most of the English spoken in the world today is spoken between non-native speakers of the language. In fact, when we think about “International English”, there is no such things as a native or non-native speaker.
