Can you cook? Do you like the homework of making a meal? Recently, the Ministry of Education (教育部) has made the new course standard. Primary and middle school students are required to take “Practical Life Skills” course for at least one class hour—about 45 minutes every week.
Some schools have started to offer such course. Guquan from No. 1 Middle School, used to be a lazy boy. In his own words, he hardly ever did any housework. But things have changed since No. 1 Middle School made housework part of the students’ homework. Doing dishes, cooking and making the bed—all of these housework have become part of Guquan’s daily life. His life skills have been improved (提升) by taking the course.
At the beginning of each month, each student gets a list of housework to do for the weekend. Their parents help them keep records of the housework they do. The housework is common and simple, such as cleaning the room and cooking. On special days, like Mother’s Day, students should prepare gifts for their mothers. Huang Yixi, 14, has learned several life skills through the course, including cooking. “I used to be afraid of fire,” she said. But she tried to overcome (克服) her fear and complete her cooking tasks. At the same time, she also learned how tired her mother could get after doing housework every day. On Mother’s Day, she made a cake for her mother to show her thanks. “I’ve begun to better understand my parents and want to help them more,” she said.
Other schools in Hunan are also developing programs to teach their students life skills. On May 12th, Xinhua Middle School held a life skill competition. Students had to complete many tasks including cooking and setting the table. They showed their skills and told everyone that they were growing up.

If you didn’t have private (个人的) lessons, you could still learn piano, but you would have to learn it by yourself. This was easy for some, but very difficult for most. However, with technology as it is today, there is at last another way that you can take piano lessons. You can take an online course.
An online course can save you lots of money. If a private lesson costs 30 or 40 dollars per week, just think about how quickly that adds up. You can take a complete online course in piano by spending a small part of the money that you would pay for taking weeks of private lessons. Also, private lessons are only usually one hour per week. If you have questions during the rest of the week, or if you forget something that your teacher said, you will have to wait for your next lesson to continue your learning. However, online piano courses are quite different.
With an online piano course, you can work at your own pace (进度). You can also take as many lessons per week as you’d want, or go back and listen to your last lesson if you have forgotten anything. Most adults who want to learn how to play the piano enjoy being able to go back and listen to lessons they watched before. It can give you a good idea of what you were doing right, what you were doing wrong, and what you should be doing before the next lesson.
Of course, if you need someone to sit beside you and give you instant feedback (及时反馈) while you are playing, you are not suggested to choose an online course. But most adult learners think they can get their own type of feedback by watching the course again and again.

On a school day, 60 students at Xishan Primary School in Shunde, Guangdong, are learning how to make corn soup in an after-school cooking class. Working in groups of four or five, the little cooks take their jobs very seriously. Soon, they are showing off their own delicious dishes.
Since last September, the school has set up after-school classes for students, with cooking classes being the most popular, said Xinhua. It comes after the “double reduction policy(双减政策)”. The policy aims to lower down the schoolwork burden(负担)on primary and junior high school students. According to the policy, children below the third grade will not have homework anymore. It should take no more than 90 minutes for junior high school students to finish their homework.
Great progress has made through the policy so far. Almost all primary and middle school now offer two-hour after-school services on weekdays. More than 90 percent of students can finish their written homework in the set time. “Our homework is clearly less than before,” said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks anymore. The exercises are mainly from the textbook.” According to Shen, teachers are teaching at a much slower speed, which gives students enough time to process new information.
