The day was like any other day in his life, Tom walked past(走过) the shop on the street corner. He stopped to look at the front row(前排) of shoes, and he felt happy to see that the pair of shoes he wanted very much were still there. Looking down(向下看), he felt sorry for himself. He really wanted to have them for his birthday.
He sadly walked away(走开) and thought how to tell his mother about it. He knew she would give him anything he liked if she could. But he also knew very well she had little money. He decided not to go home at once(立刻), as he looked worried and his mother would notice(注意) it. So he went to the park and sat on the grass. Then he saw a boy in a wheel chair(轮椅). He noticed that the boy moved the wheel with his hands. Tom looked at him carefully and was surprised to see the boy have no feet. He looked at his own feet. “It’s much better to be without shoes than without feet,” he thought. There was no reason(理由) for him to feel so sorry and sad. He sent away sadness(遣散悲伤) and smiled, he thought he was happier.

Mark looked at the charts taped to the walls. There are charts for parking problems, crime, and for problems in empty buildings. People were supposed to suggest solutions to the councilwoman.

Andrew Matthews, an Australian writer, tells us that making our dreams real is our life’s biggest challenge. You may think you’re not very good at some school subjects, or that is impossible for you to become a writer. These kinds of thoughts stop you from making your dream real. In fact, everyone can make his dream come true. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is. Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want. Do this step by step and your dream will come true faster because a big dream is, in fact (实际上), many small dreams. You must also never give up your dream. Last summer my family went camping by a lake in the countryside. There we put up our tents and made a fire to keep us warm and cook food on. On the first night, we sat under the moon and told each other stories.
The next morning, my sister and I got a terrible surprise. When we looked out of our tent, we saw a big snake sleeping near the fire. I was was so scared that I couldn't move. We shouted to our parents to let them know about the danger. My dad started to jump up and down in their tent. This woke the snake up and it moved into the forest near the lake. A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles(脚踝)was hurt and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I decided to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later told me that I was “not good it sports”.
The idea that I was “not good at sports” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle(斗争)against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was good at sports. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating(出汗)and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带)became untied. So I stopped to he them. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERE!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the ankle hurt badly. But I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
As I came near mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She ever minded the clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned how much I spent on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got be same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had. Now I can call myself a marathon winner”.
