At my heaviest I weighed 370 pounds. I had a very poor relationship with food: I used it to kill bad feelings, to make myself feel better, and to celebrate. Worried about my health, I tried many different kinds of diets but nothing worked. I came to believe that I could do nothing about my weight.
When I was 50, my weight problem began to affect me seriously. I didn’t want to live the rest of my life with this extra weight any more.
That year, I attended a meeting where we were asked to create a project that would touch the world. In it, a leader shared her success story — she had not only lost 125 pounds, but also raised 25,000 dollars for homeless children.
Encouraged by her story, I created the As We Heal, the World Heals project. My goals were to lose 150 pounds in one year and to raise 50, 000 dollars in support of a movement started 30 years ago to end hunger. This combination (结合) of healing myself and healing the world made it the perfect solution for me.
I sent letters to everyone I knew and informed them about my project. It worked perfectly. Donations began flooding in from hundreds of people.
Of course, I also took some practical steps to lose weight. I asked a doctor for advice, I hired a fitness coach and I began to eat small and healthy meals. My fund-raising focus also gave me new motivation (动力) to exercise regularly.
A year later, I reached my goals: I lost 150 pounds and raised 50,000 dollars! I feel that I have been given a second life to do something that is meaningful.

“Well, we could use some hot dogs.” I was at the local charity food pantry (分发处) on a cold morning. They had an old shop besides it where I would sometimes stop to pick up a sweatshirt or a book for my sons. Sometimes I would also step back into the food pantry and ask if they needed anything. I got help from food pantries when I was a young father with a hungry family. Now, I like to give back.
This time I could see that most of the shelves were stocked with boxes and cans donated by stores. One thing they said they needed was meat, however, hot dogs were cheap and I didn’t mind getting some. I soon went to the local grocery store and filled my car with all the hot dogs I could afford.
As I was paying for them, I thought of my own childhood. I could see my mom boiling two hot dogs in a pot. Next she put each one on a slice of white bread with a piece of cheese. To top it off she would add a little tomato sauce. It didn’t cost much but to me it was a feast (盛宴), cooked with love, eaten with joy.
That memory warmed my heart as I dropped off the hot dogs at the food pantry. It felt good knowing that some other little boy or girl out there would soon be having a happy lunch. I left the pantry with a smile on my face. And as I walked to my car, I could feel my mom smiling down on me from heaven.
The truth is that, when done with love, giving and receiving are the same thing. It all comes back around again.

A vacation is supposed to be a time for relaxing. But very often it is not. “What can I do when I am a tourist?” This is what we should often think about. Usually, you may spend most days walking around some places of interest. Walking too much can be very tiring. It can cause your feet to hurt. And you may have a terrible headache after a few hours. It will weaken your body at last. If this is what you feel, you should take a rest. Don’t ask your body to do too much. A tired body means a weak body. And a weak body can make you get ailing easily and see a doctor. Just sit down for a few hours in a nice place. In good weather, look for a quiet park bench (长凳).
Sleep is also important. If you want to keep healthy, you need enough sleep. You may have trouble sleeping at night when you travel. If that is true, don’t be afraid to change rooms or hotels. You may not get enough sleep for another reason. In many cities the night life can be very exciting. Then you should plan to sleep for a few hours during the day. The extra (额外的) hours can make a big difference.
Finally, if you want to stay healthy, you must eat well. Your body needs fresh fruit and vegetables, and some milk. When you are in a new country, you may want to try new foods but you need to be careful about how much you eat. Lots of rich food is not very good for you.

Studies show that all the time spent at the desk, at the computer, or in front of the television is taking years off your life. Ancient (古代的) humans spent their days hunting (打猎), working, and moving from place to place. So being active is what our bodies are designed (设计) for. As a rapid reaction (反应) to this discovery, many people have begun using standing desks. However, this really isn’t an answer to the question.
A standing desk is a desk specially designed for use without a chair. There are many kinds of them, including normal work desks and special standing computer desks. Researchers say that simply standing instead of sitting won’t make your body much better. Standing only costs a few more calories (卡路里) than sitting and places more pressure on your joints (关节) and back. The best way is to actually move around more. Take a walk around the office every half an hour. You can also walk over to your colleagues and talk to them instead of sending emails.
These are just a few ways to start-moving more while at work. Outside of work, of course, be sure to do plenty of exercise.
