It’s a hot time for Chinese language learning across the world, not only because of China’s higher place in the world but also because of the increasing economic (经济的) and cultural connections between China and other countries.
For example, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) plans to open Chinese language courses in 200 public primary and middle schools, so experienced Chinese teachers are needed.
Other Chinese courses opened across the world show the increasing need for Chinese-speaking talent. Mandarin (普通话) became elective (选修的) foreign language in Russia’s college entrance exam. Following English, German, French, and Spanish, Mandarin has become the fifth elective test subject for the exam.
Spain has more than 40,000 people learning Chinese. Last year about 8,000 people took the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) exam. The number of people who took the test was the biggest, according to Xinhua News Agency.
In the US, learning Chinese has been popular for many years and is now a popular choice for American children, especially those who were born in good families. The children begin to learn Chinese at an early age because their parents believe that learning Chinese will help them build successful international careers (职业).

Workers in our city are changing "WC" signs all over the city. The government is spending much money changing all the bad English on signs and restaurant menus. Many other places in China are following our steps.
"WC, or water closet, is old-fashioned English. It sounds dirty to me, " says Charlie Shifflet, a young man from the US. The old sign will become "Gents/Men" and "Ladies/ Women".
"I see lots of poor English in everyday life, and not only on signs, " he says. "I know what they mean. But they are Chinglish, not real English. For example, when someone says to me ‘My hometown is Henan Province’, I know he would say: ‘My hometown is in Henan Province’. ‘Hometown’ is a smaller place in a province.” The common mistakes he picked up include "Not Entry", which should be "No Entry", "Direction of Airport" should be changed to "To the Airport". And it is "room rate", not "room price". And remember to "Keep off the grass", rather than "Care of the green".
1. What is not true about "WC"?A.It is not elegant English. | B.It stands for water closet. |
C.It is old-fashioned English. | D.It is often used in the USA. |

But why do people say it in the first place? In Western culture, people think burping is a bit rude (粗鲁的). Burping loudly in public is especially rude. So when we burp, we say “excuse me”.
However, when we sneeze, we don’t say “excuse me”. In fact, it is polite for other people to say “bless you (保佑你)” when you sneeze. You don’t have to say anything yourself. This is partly because sneezing is hard to stop.
However, you can usually stop your burps—or at least try to burp quietly.
In fact, it can be bad for your health to try to “hold in” your sneezes. Just make sure you cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze so you don’t spread (传播) any germs (细菌).
1. The underlined word “sneeze” means “________” in Chinese.A.打嗝 | B.打哈欠 | C.打喷嚏 | D.打呼噜 |

A.To stay healthy. | B.To make it less loud. |

A proverb(格言)is a short, well-known saying that expresses a common truth or belief. Proverbs are found in most cultures and are often very old.
In American history, Benjamin Franklin was a scientist, inventor and writer as well as a leader of the American Revolution.
Here are other examples of proverbs that Americans use. The first ones are about love. Some people say, “All is fair in love and war.” They mean that anything you do in a relationship or in battle is acceptable.
Here is another popular saying about love: “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Some people believe that a woman can win a man’s love if she prepares his favorite foods.
We have to stop here, so we must say, “All good things must come to an end.”
A.Actions speak louder than words. |
B.Another proverb says “Love is blind.” |
C.He was also famous for his proverbs. |
D.This means that money should not be wasted. |
E.He included many proverbs that he had heard or created. |
F.Where there is a will, there is a way. |
“The first question people ask at a new place is ‘Is there WI-FI’ because Internet service fees are so high,” said Premier Li. According to a recent survey by CCTV, the average cost(平均费用) of 1GB mobile Internet data per month(每月) in China is 100 Yuan, while it is only 60 Yuan in the US and 40 in Japan.
However, high prices don’t necessarily mean good service. The average Internet speed in China was 4.25Mbps(兆比特每秒)in 2014. South Korea had the fastest average Internet speed-25.3 Mbps. People can download a 1 GB movie within 6 minutes in South Koreas, but in China it would take half an hour.
To improve Internet services, the key is to build more fiber(光纤) networks. Through them we can send text, pictures and videos globally(全球地) in less than a second(秒), which offer high speed Internet. Besides, the lack of (缺少)market competition is another problem. Having more operators(运营商)besides China Unicom and China Telecom may lower the prices.
1. Why do people always ask for WI-FI at a new place in China?
A.Because they can’t use Internet without WI-FI. |
B.Because they can communicate with their families. |
C.Because they want to download movies. |
D.Because Internet service fees are too high. |
A.China | B.USA | C.Japan | D.South Korea |
A.To increase Internet service fees. |
B.To build more fiber networks. |
C.To learn from South Korea. |
D.To make the government know the situation. |
A. Something useful and inexpensive should be right for old people such as clothes or nourishment(营养品). But remember not to send a clock or scissors as gifts! B. Four is the most unlucky number in China. It sounds like “death” in Chinese. Other numbers like 14 and 44 aren’t liked, either. C. People in China are supposed to shake hands when they meet for the first time. Kissing or hugging to greet is seldom seen. Sometimes people nod and smile at others. D. It seems that the Chinese like 6, 8 and 9 more than any other number. These numbers sound like the meanings of shun, fa and jiu in Chinese. E. People in China are usually supposed to respect the old and love the young. So in such a situation, you’re supposed to stand up and let them sit in your seat. F. Children are supposed to accept any present. They don’t mind if the presents cost much or not. What’s more, they always wish to get more presents. G. In China, adults seem to drink more tea or milk. However, teenagers are different. Most of them prefer milk tea or all kinds of beverages(饮料). Some people often drink water. |

What would naturalist Charles Darwin, author of 1859’s the Origin of Species, think of today’s pioneering evolutionary (进化的) development? Scientists at the University of Vermont (UVM) have just “designed” a living robot made of living cells on a supercomputer, called “xenobots”.
Unlike traditional robots, an xenobot is a very small robot. Its size is currently smaller than a grain of salt. It’s not made of metal, plastic, or other synthetic(人造的) materials. Rather, it is made from living cells taken from an African frog(青蛙). These robots cure themselves after being cut and they are ALIVE! They are living robots!
The purpose of inventing xenobots is to make them improve our lives, especially we want them to solve problems troubling our planet. There are some future uses of xenobots that have been proposed. Let’s look at some of them!
In the future, scientists may develop xenobots to detect and fight cancer. They are tiny and can go through human bodies. When something is wrong with human bodies, they could receive the order to find the problems in the human body and fight diseases or cancers. With these usages, xenobots would become a revolutionary element in the medical field.
These xenobots aren’t just limited to the medical field. They could also become the saviors of our planet! Due to increased industrial activity over the past few decades, the oceans and other water bodies of the planet are being badly polluted, as waste materials from industries and factories are being recklessly poured into the oceans and nearby water bodies. Thus, water bodies are littered with microplastics, which cannot be easily recycled. Xenobots could help. They could collect or even break down(分解) these microplastics in the oceans and other water bodies. They could clean radioactive material in dangerous places.
The technology of such kind of robots improves amazingly with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). However, some people are worrying about the challenges that xenobots would bring. If this technology could maybe be used in a wrong way? What would happen if the technology was used against the international law? Would xenobots finally take place of human beings? While we still don’t have the answer connected to this brand-new technology, one thing is sure: it is here to help us, and it works!
