Together with her husband, Pierre, she discovered two new elements (元素) and studied the X-rays they emitted. She devoted all her life to scientific research and her efforts were rewarded. In 1903, Marie Curie won the Nobel Prize in physics and was honored with a second Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1911.

Nadim and Anneena got a magic key one day. And the magic key would bring them and their friends into some amazing adventures.
On a hot summer day, Nadim and Anneena came to play at Biff and Tim’s house. Nadim had a model book—a book which has lots of shapes and you press out the shapes, the fold and glue them to make a model.
They read about the great country Egypt and decided to make a model of it. Tim found some glue. Then Nadim pressed out the shape and the others began to fold them. First they made the pyramids. Anneena had a difficult shape to fold. “This is a sphinx.” She said. They pressed out some tiny trees and people. Biff glued them all on a piece of paper. It made the scene of Ancient Egypt. At last, the model was finished. The children were pleased with it and laughed happily. Their happy laughter brought their dog, Sam, in. He stepped in the model with his big paws. He knocked over a tree and crushed the sphinx. “Oh, Sam.” everyone yelled.
Sam looked unhappy because he knew he made the children upset. Suddenly, the magic key began to glow. The key took them back to Ancient Egypt. They were standing by a pyramid, the pyramid was still being built. Far off they could see two more pyramids. “That’s amazing!” said Nadim. “I didn’t think the pyramids were so big and they were made with such big blocks of stone.”
“Look over there!” gasped Anneena. She pointed to a huge stone sphinx. “Let’s go and look at the sphinx.” She said. They all began to run towards it. But Sam didn’t, he had seen a cat. He chased it. It jumped up to some blocks of stone. Sam jumped up, too. But the cat ran too fast for him to follow and that made Sam rather disappointed. Then he had another problem. He couldn’t get down. So he baked and baked. All the Egyptian slave workers saw them. They talked in a strange language, Nadim and his friends were frightened. They didn’t know what to do. But to their great surprise, all the people there put their hands together and raised them in the air. Then they sank down on their knees. They bowed to Sam. Just as the Egyptians were catching them, the magic key glowed again and brought them back home. What an exciting adventure!

Have you ever cut, copied and pasted (粘贴) something on a computer? What about opening a file (文件) by clicking on it? These ideas and technologies were created by Larry Tesler, an American computer scientist.
Larry Tesler was born on 24th April 1945. He had a strong interest in computers in his early years. In high school, he started to show his talent for numbers. His teacher noticed it and told Tesler that his skill could be used in computer science. Tesler then became interested in computers and joined a programme where he could spend half an hour of computer time each week. During that time, he taught himself programming before he went to college! Eight years after graduating from Stanford University, Tesler took a job at Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Centre (PARC), where he developed “cut”, “copy” and “paste”. Before his creation, people would edit (编辑) a text by physically cutting parts of printed text and gluing them elsewhere.
Tesler also got the idea that a user should be able to open a file by simply clicking on it. He hoped to make it easier for people to use computers.
Besides, Tesler realized the cheaper and better personal computer would be popular in the market, so he decided to push for low-cost computers. It turned out to be such a wise decision.
Tesler developed many new and creative programs and made life easier for many people. Sadly, the great scientist passed away on 17th February 2020 at the age of 75. However, he will always be remembered, for the great contributions(贡献) he made to society.

Though he was one of China’s most famous scientists, Yuan Longping considered himself a farmer, because he worked the land to do his research.
Known as “Father of Hybrid Rice (杂交水稻)”, Dr. Yuan graduated from Southwest Agricultural (农业的) College in 1953. From then on, finding ways to grow more rice was his life goal. As a young man, he saw the great need for increasing (增长) the rice production (生产). At that time, hunger was a serious problem in many parts of the countryside. Dr. Yuan searched for a way to get more rice with the same size of the fields. In 1974, he became an agricultural pioneer in the world to grow rice that has high production and that is called super hybrid rice.
In the 1980s, he went around the world and gave advice about growing rice to farmers in other countries. In 2004, he won the World Food Prize for his work.
Dr. Yuan was quite satisfied with his life. He would much rather keep time for his hobbies. He enjoyed playing the violin, swimming and reading. Spending money on himself meant very little to him, so he gave millions of yuan to help some researchers with their research in farming.
Long ago Dr. Yuan had a dream about rice plants as tall as sorghum (高粱). With his hard work, he grew the rice that could feed more people. President Xi Jinping praised him for his great contributions (贡献) to China’s food safety and world corn development.

For many Chinese families, rice is an important part of almost every meal. Where does rice come from? Yuan Longping and his team work to grow rice on the farmland (耕地).
China has 22% of the world’s population(人口), but only 7% of its farmland, ________ food was a big problem in China in the past. In the 1960s, there was a terrible famine in China. Millions of people died because they had no food. Yuan taught farming at school at that time and he was really sad to see this. “How can I help them have enough food?” he thought. He decided to work on a kind of hybrid rice (杂交水稻) because it has higher output (产量).
At that time, other scientists didn’t believe hybrid rice had much value (价值). But Yuan and his team worked on it every day. They took very good care of their rice.
At last, in 1973, they grew a new type of hybrid rice. Farmers can grow it in many different kinds of farmland and also in bad weather. It can fight disease, too. Its output is much greater than common kinds of rice. With the new type, about 70,000,000 people could have food every year! In 2004 he won World Food Prize.
