Students at a primary school in a county of Zunyi city, Guizhou province, set up a rock band to realize their musical dreams, thanks to China’s “double reduction”policies(双减政策)to reduce the pressure of too much homework and off-campus tutoring on students.
The band, which was set up in October last year, is made up of seven students from different grades, with three guitarists, a drummer, a keyboardist, a bass player and a leading singer. Two months ago, the musical band gave a wonderful performance at the playground for both the teachers and students in school, who were deeply impressed by their live show.
“Their talent and musical dreams are likely to give them wings that could push them to fly away from the mountains,” said Fan Biao, a tutor for the students, who graduated in 2019 and applied to serve as a teacher for three years at the primary school.
“Last term, the average score of our school ranked first in the final exam of the primary school group in the county. The facts have shown that students were more active after carrying out the ‘double reduction’ policies,” said Fan.
With “double reduction” policies carried out, different kinds of after-school services are provided by the school. There are many colorful activities specially designed for students to join in after school, including homework tutoring, sports, arts, reading and interest groups. Many parents like to choose sports or other projects for developing children’s interests.

Li Xiang, 13, Beijing
The “double reduction” policy really helps me. Our homework is clearly less than before. I can finish it at school so that I don’t have to take it home. I can now review (复习) or preview (预习) schoolwork when I’m home. We don’t need to buy workbooks anymore and the exercises are mainly from the textbook. I’m also happy to find that there are fewer exams.
Zhang Xiaoming, 14, Shanghai
The best thing about the “double reduction” is that we have more time to do after-school activities such as dancing, volleyball and drama. I have joined a group called “leadership development”. I can learn all kinds of useful skills there. Teachers are also giving us more chances (机会) to learn from real life. For example, I learned to grow vegetables by myself during a labor class.
Chen Meng, 13, Chongqing
I have got more time to read books I like and play sports. The art subjects are becoming more important. For example, I have been learning music for a long time. Now I feel more encouraged (被鼓励的) to do so. However, we can no longer see the scores after each exam. For sure, I do feel less stress without knowing them. But at the same time, I don’t know what level (水平) I am at, which makes me a little worried.
1. Both Zhang Xiaoming and Chen Meng share their opinions by ________.A.telling stories | B.giving examples | C.listing numbers | D.giving suggestions |
A.There are more math exams than before. | B.Students have less homework than before. |
C.Students can learn useful skills from labor classes. | D.The art subjects are getting more important. |

For students who have special needs, the programs can last even longer to solve the difficulties working parents have in picking up their children. The programs should help students finish their homework, tutor (指导) students who have difficulty in learning and organizing activities including reading, sports, interest groups and clubs. The programs should mainly be run by schoolteachers, who should be compensated (补偿) for the extra work, and allow for participation (参与) by outside professionals (专业人员) and volunteers.
The ministry said Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, has been offering free after-school programs in all primary schools since 2017. All 84 primary and middle schools in Beijing’s Dongcheng District also offer such programs, which are attended by almost 80 percent of students, the ministry said.
More than 92 percent of parents expect schools to organize safe and colorful after-school programs for their children, according to a survey by China Youth Daily.
The survey of 1,605 parents found that 73 percent wanted the programs to cover tutoring and on-site(现场的) question-and-answer activities, while about 70 percent hoped teachers could guide their children with homework.
Xiong Bingqi, director of the 21st Century Education Research Institute in Beijing, said more choices should be given to schools. The activities they want to choose should be based on the needs of students and parents, so the programs do not become day care centers.

Players are grouped by where they are from. “I’m from Guangdong. Our team is now on the top, followed by Sichuan, Fujian, Hubei. When I am playing, I feel like I’m fighting for the whole Guangdong province.” Jin says.
