Gregg’s dream was to travel around the Americas(美洲). He got the idea after he finished a long bike ride. Gregg’s friend, Brooks, also liked riding a bike. The two friends talked and made a plan. They would travel from Alaska to Argentina by bike.
To pay for the trip, Gregg and Brooks worked to save money for a long time. When they were on the road, they often camped outdoors and ate cheaply. In many places, local people opened their doors to the two friends and gave them food. On their way, there were deserts, rainforests and mountains. They visited modern cities and ancient ruins. And they made many friends from all over the world.
Two years later, Gregg finally reached Ushuaia, Argentina in May 2007. When they were near Guatemala, Brooks had to go back and Gregg continued without him.
They both learned a lot about traveling. Here are some of Gregg’s suggestions.

Has your mother or grandmother ever made embroidered(刺绣的) clothes for you? In the past, Chinese people often embroidered on hats, shoes and dresses to show the beauty of nature or the best wishes to others. Some girls would even embroider on a sachet(香囊) as a gift for their lovers.
Shu embroidery comes from Sichuan. It is said that Shu embroidery is the oldest kind of embroidery in China. People began to make it during the Han Dynasty (202BC-220AD). They sold it to other countries such as ancient Rome.
Shu embroidery takes time. It might take as long as a whole day to finish just 10cm. Embroidery workers need to divide each silk thread (丝线) into more than 10 or even 30 smaller threads. Each smaller thread is thinner than a human hair.
Meng Dezhi, who used to work at the Chengdu Shu Embroidery Factory, has been making Shu embroidery for 40 years. After a week, the rich man came to take the painting, but he was not pleased with it. He told the young painter, “I will only pay 3,000 dollars for this painting.”
The young painter was angry. He argued with the rich man, hoping the rich man would keep his word. The rich man thought, “The man in the painting is me. If I don’t buy this painting, no one else will buy it.” So he said, “I will ask you one last time: will you sell it for 3,000 dollars?” The young painter said firmly(坚定地), “No. This is a shame for me! I would prefer not to sell it rather than be humiliated(羞辱) by you. Someday, you will pay 20 times the cost for breaking your promise.”
After that, the painter worked hard day and night. Finally, he became well-known in the art world.
The rich man forgot about the artist and what he had told him. But one day, some friends told him, “There is a painting selling for 200,000 dollars and the man in the painting looks exactly like you. It has a name of ‘Thief(贼)’.” Then, the rich man remembered the artist. He quickly went to say sorry and paid 200,000 dollars to buy the portrait. 5. From the passage we learn that we should keep our word, otherwise(否则), we may be punished.
“Don’t tell anyone”. We hear these words when someone tells a secret to us. But it can be hard to keep a secret. Often, we can’t help “spilling the beans”, even if we regret it later.
According to Asim Shah, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine, US, keeping a secret may well “become a burden”. This is because people often have an “obsessive and anxious urge(冲动) to share it with someone.
An earlier study, led by Anita E. Kelly, a scientist at the University of Notre Dame, US, suggested that keeping a secret could cause stress. People entrusted with secrets can suffer from depression, anxiety, and body aches, reported the daily Mail.
But with secrets so often getting out, why do people share them at all? Shah explained that people often feel that it will help them keep a person as a friend. Another reason people share secrets is guilt over keeping it from someone close to them. A sense of distrust can develop when people who are close do not share it with each other. “Keeping or sharing secrets often puts people in a position of either getting or losing the trust of someone.” according to Shah.
He added that talkative people could let secrets slip out. But this doesn't mean that it is a good idea only to share secrets with quiet people. A quiet person may be someone who keeps everything inside. To tell such a person a secret may cause them stress, and make them talk about the secret.
Shah said that to judge whether to tell someone a secret, you'd better put yourself in their position. Think about how you would feel to be told that you mustn’t give the information away. Shah also recommended that if you accidentally give up someone’s secret you should come clean about it. Let the person know that their secret isn't so secret any more.
