Do you find it hard to learn math and history? A recent study carried out by scientists from University of London, may be of help to you. They found that teenagers could get higher marks in math if they studied in the morning and better grades in history if they were taught in the afternoon.
The researchers did a study at a secondary school in Bulgaria over nine years. The results showed that when teenagers had math classes earlier in the day, they scored on average (平均) 7 percent higher in tests than when taught in the afternoon. Lower-ability students did worst when they were studying math in the afternoon.
In history, students taught in the afternoon scored on average 6 percent higher than when they were taught in the morning. However, it doesn’t work for other subjects such as languages or geography.
Velichka Dimitrova, leader of the study, said the findings show that we do better at different times of the day.
“In the morning, our brains are better and fresher, so we are better at doing something that repeats a lot like problem solving, where we require more speed and attention,” Dimitrova told The Telegraph.
“In the afternoon, it seems that this process (过程) slows down. On the other hand, history is better suitable for the afternoon, when we are more creative and open to discussion,” she said.
Subjects such as foreign languages require both memory and repetition (重复), and they also need people to be creative. This is perhaps why the time of day has no influence on learning.
Time-of-day effects such as those are believed to be connected to the body clock. This is the system in our bodies that controls when we need to sleep. Some schools in the US and UK have tried out later school starting times for teenagers, whose body clocks change as they grow into adults.
Dimitrova believes schools should take this chance to improve students’ performance just by changing their timetables.

I put a small set of Tinkertoys in front of each student, and said: "Make something out of the Tinkertoys. You have 45 minutes today-and 45minutes each day for the rest of the week."
A few students didn't start immediately. They waited to see what the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions(说明书)and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations.
Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time. His products filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home. I was so proud to meet such a student. Here was an exactly creative mind at work. His excellent act meant that I had an unexpected teaching helper in class whose creativity(创造力)would push the other students.
However, I knew encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside. I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking.
There's still someone who would say directly, "But I'm just not creative."
"Do you dream at night when you're asleep?"
"Oh, sure."
"So tell me one of your most interesting dreams." The student would tell something imaginative. Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads. "That's pretty creative. Who does that for you?"
"Nobody. I do it."
"Really-at night, when you're asleep?"
"Sure."
"Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay?"

Why must we go to school?
Every single one of you has something you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide.
Maybe you could be a good writer — maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper — but you might not know it until you write a paper for your English class. Maybe you could be an inventor — maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or a new medicine or vaccine — but you might not know it until you do a project for your science class. Maybe you could be a mayor or a Senator or a Supreme Court Justice, but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team.
And no matter what you want to do with your life — I guarantee that you’ll need an education to do it. You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You’re going to need a good education for every single one of those careers. You can’t drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You’ve got to work for it and train for it and learn for it.
And this isn’t just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. What you’re learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future.

"I hate all the terrible pianos in this town. I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can't even understand a bit of music."
"I'm never playing in that club again. Too many drunks and nobody listens to us."
But one younger musician said, "There are a few clubs that book my band (乐队) a few nights a month, and I'm trying to find other places to play. I'm also looking forward to booking a few summer festivals this year."
It's said that you are the average (平均) of the five people whom you spend the most time with, or to put it another way, you are who your friends are.
Attitudes(态度) are important. Whether they're positive(积极的)or negative (消极的),
This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you often go out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard for yourself and don't become friends with people who fall below that standard.
Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better. Ask them how they do it and learn from them. Ask if they will help you get the work you're looking for, or maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path.

Plogging, a new way to exercise, began in Sweden. The name “plogging” comes from two words—the Swedish word “plocka”, which means “to pick up”, and the word “jogging”, which means “to run slowly”. A Swedish man called Eric started the movement. He saw rubbish here and there when riding to work each day. He became worried about the dirty environment and decided not to go to work by bike any more. Instead, he began to run to work and pick up the rubbish at the same time. To his joy, more and more people followed him and soon plogging became popular.
Many people choose plogging instead of just jogging because they think plogging is a good way to help clean up the earth. Sometimes rubbish is difficult to collect because it may scatter all around. But if the runners pick up the rubbish on the way, it is quite different. After all, many hands make light work. Another reason is that plogging burns 48 calories (卡路里). According to a research, plogging for 10 minutes burns 48 calories, while usual jogging for 10 minutes burns about 39 calories.

In the ancient Arabic tale called Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, the young hero Ali Baba says “Open Sesame(芝麻开门) ” and a door to hidden treasure (财宝) is opened to him. The old story had a special meaning for Ma Yun. He drew inspiration from it for Alibaba. com: China's largest e-commerce (电子商务) website.
In 1995 Ma was working for a US trading company when he was introduced to the Internet. “I knew nothing about personal computers. I had never touched a keyboard (键盘) before,” he said. He searched the word “beer” and saw that nothing came up about Chinese products.
Ma had an idea. Why not build a large internet market to connect consumers (消费者) and companies from all over the world? That way they could do business online.
That is how Alibaba began. His company grew quickly. But that doesn’t mean everything went smoothly for Ma. Alibaba had a difficult time m 2000, when many internet companies failed. He was successful because he managed to attract investment (投资) into his company.
But there is a deeper reason.
It is Ma's attitude. “You deserve (值得) to live your dream,” he said. “Everyone thought I was daydreaming when I started. But the most important thing is that we believed in our dream from day one, to today and tomorrow. Of course we made many mistakes, but we never gave up hope.”
Besides the determination(决心) , Ma is also smart. For him, success in business is like trying to catch a rabbit. “If there are nine rabbits, focus on catching one-don't try and catch them all.” he said. “Change your ways if you need to, but don't change the rabbit. Get one first, put it in your pocket and then catch the others.”

Last Friday, I visited a school. There I met Miss Beam for the first time. She was kind and friendly.
At first I asked Miss Beam some questions about her teaching. “We help students with different subjects. We also teach them how to be kind to others and be a responsible(负责的)person,” she said.
Then Miss Beam showed me around the school. I saw many students playing happily on the playground. But one of them caught my eye. The girl was lame(跛的), so she just sat there. After that, some of her friends went to her and talk with her to make her happy. “What a poor girl!” I said.
Miss Beam laughed, “Oh, no. She is not really lame. This is just her ‘lame day’. And each student in the school has a ‘lame day’.”

That night, he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail (详细)and even drew pictures of the ranch.
He put a great idea of heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later, he got his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, “see me after class.”
