Many kids help their parents to do chores, such as washing the dishes, cleaning the floors and taking out the rubbish in the house. And some kids get money or other rewards from their parents, such as playing computer games for 20 minutes.
But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. One of them is Susie Walton, a parenting educator. She believes that if kids get rewards, they will think that work isn’t worth doing unless they can get something. For example, kids won’t sweep the floor if they see it is dirty. But they will clean the floor if their parents reward them for it. Susie said, “A home is a living place for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that it’s all families’ job to keep their homes clean.”
Other people have different opinions. They believe that money or other rewards can encourage kids to do more chores. It also teaches them real world lessons that we need to work to make money. Now, there are also apps that encourage kids to do chores. The apps give kids points and gifts that can be used either online or in the real world. With the ChoreMonster app, kids get points after doing chores. Kids can exchange their points for real rewards, such as time to play video games or a trip to the mall.
What do you think? Should kids be rewarded for doing chores? Or should kids help out around their homes without getting anything?

A: Oh no, this is too hard for me. I’m not even going to try and work it out.
B: Ah, this is quite hard but I like to push myself. Even if I don’t get the answer right, maybe I’ll learn something in the process.
Carol Dweck, the psychologist(心理学家)of Stanford University, gave problems to a group of ten-year-olds. The problems were too hard for them. One group said positively that they loved challenges and understood their abilities could be developed. Professor Dweck said they had a “growth mindset” and focused on what they could achieve in the future. But another group felt that their intelligence was being judged and they had failed. They had a “fixed mindset” and were unable to imagine improving. To boost(提升)their self-esteem(自尊), these students even looked for someone who had done worse than them.
Professor Dweck believes that there is a problem in education at the moment. For years, children have been praised for their intelligence or talent, but it makes them afraid to face failure. They want to please by getting high grades, but they are not really interested in learning. The solution, according to Dweck, is to praise the process of children making an effort, using learning strategics and improving. This way they will become interested in getting better at something and will achieve more. She thinks that keeping working hard over time is the key to success.
Psychologists have been testing these theories. They taught students that if they left their comfort zone(区域)and learned something new and difficult, the neurons(神经元)in their brains would form stronger connections, making them more intelligent. In another study, some children who didn’t perform well made great progress after learning growth mindset skills for a year. They came top in tests, beating children from much more better schools. These children had previously(以前)felt that making an effort was a sign of stupidity, but they came to see it as the key to learning.
So, back to our question in the beginning. If you answered B, well done—you already have a growth mindset. If A, don’t worry, everyone can be excellent with a little effort and self-awareness.

Labor Education Recently, the Ministry of Education has released the new curriculum standard for labor education in compulsory (义务) education. China’s public schools will soon ask students to put down their books and electronic devices and pick up brooms and kettles. The standard has made labor education an independent course and students will take courses on labor skills at least once a week starting from the next term. ____________________ Have you grown taller and stronger? On May 3, the Ministry of Education brought out the results of the eighth national health survey for students from elementary school through college and university. The survey comes out every five years. This year’s survey showed Chinese students’ overall (总的) health and fitness have improved since 2017. For example, the height of boys and girls increased 1.69 cm and 0.97 cm respectively in the age group of 13 to 15. More time for my favorite The “double reduction” policy really helps me. Our homework is clearly less than before. I can finish it at school with no need to take it home. Instead, I can review or preview school work when I’m home. Besides, teachers now teach at a much slower pace so that we have enough time to understand what we have learned. We don’t need to buy workbooks anymore and the exercises are mainly from the textbook. I’m also happy to find there are fewer exams. |

The high school entrance exams for Chinese Junior 3 students are mainly about academic subjects, such as math and Chinese. But starting from 2022, they will be tested in areas like music and art.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) said that fine arts will be included in high school entrance exams in more provinces and cities by 2022. Twelve cities in six provinces have already started the practice, including Nanjing and Qingdao. The scores for these subjects are from 10 to 40 points.
This is being done to encourage primary and secondary schools to provide more fine arts classes. They should cover subjects such as music, painting, calligraphy(书法), dance, drama and opera, The Paper noted.
“Aesthetic(艺术的)education is not just about teaching students how to paint, sing or dance— it’s about the ability to appreciate artistic beauty, which is very important for students’ mental(心理的) health,” Fan Di’an, president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, told China Daily.
However, the change has caused heated discussion. Many students and their parents worry about this new policy will bring too much work. They think that since students already have adding new testing material would make things worse.
It was also pointed out that not every student would be talented enough to be good at these subjects. “It’s really hard for tone-deaf(五音不全的) people like me to remember melodies(旋律). So I need to do extra practice before music tests,” Zhao Hanfang, a 15-year-old student from Yunnan, told TEENS. “So if music is included in the high school entrance exams, I might be too much stressed.”
In response to this, Jiangsu authorities said that the tests would based on basic knowledge that comes from the students’ textbooks. The extra workload will not be difficult and shouldn’t put too much pressure on students, China Business Herald noted.

The Eixample bike bus begins around 8: 25 every Friday morning. The path it will follow is always posted in advance, so everyone knows where to join.
Most kids ride their bikes, but others ride scooters(滑板车) or use skates. Instead of riding in bike lanes(车道) or on sidewalks, the bicibus takes up the whole street. With music playing and bike bells ringing, the bicibus feels like a party.
It was impossible to bike to school in the Eixample before, because it wasn’t really safe for kids. There are a few bike lanes, but also lots of cars. Because these are busy streets, the local police are helping stop traffic by riding in front of the bicibus and behind it.
Parents hope the bicibus will help change the way people get around in the city. They want the city to create wider, kid-friendly bike lanes that are separate from car traffic. They point out that the bicibus also helps cut down on pollution.

For example, a dog shakes its tail to show its happiness and barks to drive a bad person away. Therefore, animals can show some feelings like humans, too. However, are they able to feel unhappy?
The answer is yes. Many studies showed this. When meeting some bad things, animals show sadness as human beings do. When a friend around dies, both animals and humans act in some same ways: not talking with others, sleeping less, and eating less. It proves that animals have the feeling of sadness. Just like humans, it also takes animals a lot of time to get away from it.
In fact, lots of people treat pet animals as their toys. They don’t care about what they need and like. They leave animals alone at home, and don’t take them to walk outside. All of these are bad for animals, and easily lead to some bad results. They may die early if we don’t understand them or treat them well. Knowing that animals have sad feelings, we should change the way of treating them.

The survey was carried out by Action for Children, a children’s charity in the UK. They questioned more than 2,200 parents and found that parents are more likely to care about their children’s ability to make friends than their lessons. 33% of the parents put not making friends on top of the list of their worries about their children, while just 11% of the parents said their main worry is that their children will not be able to keep up with the schoolwork.
Everyone needs friends. They are a basic source of happiness and hope in our lives. However, the ability to make friends varies from person to person. To some people, making friends is easy, and to others it’s very difficult. We all have the ability to make friends. Unfortunately, many people never reach their potential. Making friends is a skill, and the first step in developing that skill is to know how to get along with others.
Experts say it’s natural for some children to feel nervous if they don’t know how to get on well with others in a new environment. However, parents and teachers should help them learn some basic social skills such as sharing, helping, cooperation and communication.
“Teach your child to know the importance of having friends. Let him or her know having hundreds of online friends is not the same as having a friend he or she can connect and be with in person every day,” stressed an expert.

After his father was rushed to the hospital with bleeding, 43-year-old Desouvre nearly went mad. So he did the one thing he knew would calm himself: he wrote.
“I’m so scared,” he started. “I don’t know what I’ll do if I lose my dad.”
Over the next few weeks, Desouvre filled several notebooks, writing about his worries as well as his happy memories with his dad—the jokes they’d shared, the basketball games they’d watched, and the time they pulled through hurricane together, then cooled down with ice cream. Sometimes Desouvre cried as he wrote. Often he laughed.
“Writing allowed me to face my fear,” says Desouvre. “My pen encouraged me to deal with the pain.”
“He is in good company. People who do this, recording their deepest thoughts and feelings, often show improved mental and physical health.” Says James Penne baker, PhD, a psychology professor at the University of Texas, Austin. “It can strengthen the immune (免疫) system, including for people with illnesses such as cancer, PTSD, depression. Research also found that it can help improve mood, sleep, and memory. And it may even help prevent colds and flu.”
Then why write? Thinking or talking about an event can make you become lost in your emotions. But writing forces you to slow down. It can lead to greater positive mood, and a stronger appreciation for life. “Writing can increase someone’s acceptance of their experiences, and acceptance is calming,” James Penne baker says. Expressive writing works because it allows you to do something meaningful out of a painful experience. Recognizing that something is confusing you is an important first step. Then, translating that experience into language forces you to organize your thoughts. And expressing gives you a sense of control.
“You can’t keep things bottled up,” he says. “It will make you sick.” As he wrote, Desouvre asked himself how he felt about the hard times of his life. “It was painful. But when I learnt more about the pain, I was able to see the courage I didn’t know I had. My expressive writing has helped me discover the hope I need to heal (治愈).”

Some British people like to invite friends for a meal at home. You should not be sad if your English friends don’t invite you home. It doesn’t mean they don’t like you!
Dinner parties usually start between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and end at about 11:00 p.m. Ask your hosts(主人) what time you should arrive. It’s polite to bring some flowers, chocolate or a bottle of wine (酒) as a gift. Usually dinners start with drinks.
Do you want to be polite? Say how much you like the room or the pictures on the wall. But remember—it’s not polite to ask how much things cost.
In many families, the husband sits at one end of the table and the wife sits at the other end. They eat with their guests.
You’ll probably start the meal with soup or something small, and then you’ll have meat or fish with vegetables. Finally, you’ll have dessert. It’s polite to finish everything on your plate and take more if you want.
Do you enjoy the evening? Call your hosts, or write them a short thank you letter after that. British people like to say “thank you” all the time.
