Last week, my father and I went back to my hometown—Zibo in Shandong to try Zibo barbecue(烧烤). (A) Recently, the local food has become so popular that people all over China travel there to taste it.
On the way to Zibo, my father told me a story. Last year during the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of college students were stuck in Zibo. The local government helped (B) them to get through that period and offered a great barbecue dinner when the quarantine(隔离)was over. The government officers also invited the students to come back to Zibo again when spring came. I was moved when I heard this.
At 5 p.m., we arrived at the restaurant. My father had booked a table two days earlier. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be any seats for us. There are some differences between Zibo’s barbecue and the ones in other cities. Zibo’s barbecue restaurants have a small grill(烤架)on each table. People need to cook on the grill by themselves. When the food is ready, you put it onto a small pancake, and then add scallions(葱)and sauce before eating.
People in the restaurant didn’t know each other before. But we just talked naturally about daily life and sang together. The boss of the restaurant even danced. (C) Some local people even put off their orders when they heard there weren’t enough seats. They wanted tourists from other places to have the chance to eat.
After eating the delicious food, I kept thinking about why Zibo became popular. Is it the promise between the government and the college students, or the unique, tasty food, or the warmhearted people?

When it comes to protecting our environment, recycling is the least we all can do. Well, a seven-year-old boy, Ryan Hickman from California has shown us that it’s never too early to start recycling.
The young boy became interested in recycling after his dad took him to a local recycling center when he was three years old. That experience made a deep impression on him. After that, Ryan decided to start his own recycling business. Later on, Ryan’s recycling company was born.
Ryan collects and sorts bottles and boxes from his neighbours. He and his parents give empty bags to all their neighbours so that their neighbours can save their recyclables for them.
Little Ryan then takes their recyclables to the recycling center.
Since starting his own recycling business, his company has recycled more than 200,000 bottles and boxes. He has also tried to save $11,000 for college. In early 2017, Ryan’s recycling story went hot and he was even invited to be a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
“Ryan is very crazy about recycling, and he would like to get everybody else be interested in in as well,” said his mother. If you are inspired (鼓舞) by Ryan Hickman’s little business, start recycling now. Next time when you walk past a bottle on the ground, please pick it up.

Over the past ten years, great changes have taken place in my hometown. In the past, the houses in our hometown were very poor, but now there are a lot of tall buildings here and there. Many people have moved into tall buildings. They live a happy life. The water in the river was very dirty in the past. People threw the rubbish everywhere and the factories poured dirty water into the river, too. There wasn’t any fish in the river. The water was black and smelt bad. But now the river is very clean; there are many kinds of fishes in the river and people can even swim in the river. After supper, people usually go for a walk by the side of the river. In the past, people used to ride bikes or go to work on foot, but now they ride their own motorbikes even drive their own cars. You can see more and more cars on the road.

She came in front of my house in the morning. Maybe someone kicked her out of his car the night before. How can I drive her away? “We are moving house.” “No space for her with the baby coming.” People always find all kinds of excuses to abandon her. She is so poor.
I called her Goldie. She was so restless during those first days. She ate only a little food and always felt sad. God knows what had happened to her at her owner’s home. How could her owner do such bad things! Thinking about her owner like this. I got angry. Luckily, with my care a few days later, things changed. She looked well.
I was so surprised when one day she pulled away from me. We were out for a walk at that time. She ran off down the road to a farmhouse far away.
When I got to the farm, I was very tired. Then I saw her licking four little dogs and watching them with soft eyes. Then a woman came to me. “Thank God! Thank you for bringing her back to us. I took her for a walk one day, soon after the puppies were born, and she just got lost. We looked for her for a long time,” said the woman with tears in her eyes.
I must say sorry to the family for my own thoughts. Thanks to Goldie, I had the chance to meet her owner and learned a lesson: Don’t judge.
Now I really miss Goldie, but I’ve got my Nugget now, and she looked just like her mother.

They were always camping in a place above a river. After that, they all rushed down to the river and had a swim. Standing by the river, they noticed that it was surrounded (包围) by cliffs. If someone wanted to reach the river, he had to walk past their camp. Several days later, their camping leader had to be away for a day. That afternoon, they had supper early. They were sitting round the fire, eating and talking, when an old man walked past and went down towards the river. They all felt that man looked very frightening. Each of them kept silent and said nothing.
They ate very slowly, talking as long as possible. After finishing, they collected their plates together so that they could take them to the river where they always washed them. But no one moved towards the river. Then all shouting at once, they began talking about the man who had walked past them. They agreed that how strange he looked and they wondered what he was doing by the river. They knew that he could only return by passing through their camp.
An hour passed. Then one of the boys suggested they should creep down by the river so that they could see what he was doing. Moving very slowly, they crept down (蹑手蹑脚) towards the bank. One boy climbed a tree and he could see everything clearly. He called to them that there was no one there, so they ran down to the bank, looking everywhere carefully. They could not understand where the man had gone.
When it got dark, they went back to their camp feeling unbelievable. They told the leader what had happened in the evening. Smiling, he suggested they go and look again. They did, but there was no one there.

On a winter morning, a little boy of 10 years old or so went to a phone supermarket to make a telephone call. Clearly, he changed his tone (腔调) of voice while speaking over the phone. When all this was happening, the phone supermarket owner watched and listened with great interest to the conversation that followed:
“Madam, I am a poor boy. Can you give me a job cutting grass on your lawn (草坪)?” the little boy asked.
“Sorry, I already have someone to cut my lawn,” the woman at the other end of the phone line answered.
“Madam, I will cut your lawn for half the price of the person who cuts your lawn now.”
“The person who is now cutting my lawn satisfies me a lot. He is doing a good job.”
“Madam, I’ll even sweep your curb (清扫路边), so on Sunday you will have the prettiest lawn in all of Palm beach, Florida.”
“No, thank you.”
Instead of getting angry, the little boy smiled and put back the receiver (话筒) gently. The supermarket owner, who was listening to the conversation, walked over to the boy and said, “Soon, I like your manner and I would like to offer you a job.”
“No, thanks. But I will remember your offer.”
“But you were asking for a job so sincerely and seriously when you were talking to the lady over the phone.”
