Have you ever noticed how many calories (卡路里) you eat in a day? There is a special convenience store opened in the Chengdu Youth Palace. If you “shop” there, you can find out how many calories there are in different foods.
The store was opened on May17th, 2022. It’s part of the “Know Your Food” program of the UNICEF. The purpose of the program is to make children and young people know more about foods and help them make healthy choices about their diet.
Instead of real foods, many imitation (仿制) snacks are put on the shelves in the store, including candies, sugary drinks and latiao. People can take them to the self-service counter (柜台) to see how many calories they have. In addition, the store offers many models and cartoons to help people understand which foods are very good for them and which foods they should eat less often.
At present, obesity (肥胖症) has become a serious problem among children. It is shown that nearly 20% of children between 6 and 17 years of age, and over 10% of children under the age of 6 in China are overweight. Experts also point out that the increasing availability of cheap, highly processed foods and drinks can lead to the rapid growth of children who are overweight.
Being overweight is known to have many bad influences, such as having a higher risk of getting disease and a higher risk of developing emotional and behavioral problems. Such a store helps to remind children to care about what they eat. At the same time, similar stores are opened in other cities, such as Weihai in Shandong Province.

Over ten years ago, a family of beavers turned up in a part of the river Otter, in Devon. No one knew exactly where they came from. It was a big surprise—wild beavers hadn’t lived in England for around 400 years!
In 2015, the government allowed the beavers to stay there as part of a trial (试验). They wanted to see if these animals could be reintroduced to the wild. The trial ends in February. Some scientists from the University of Exeter already say the beavers help the wildlife in the area. One scientist called it “an amazing story”.
A lot of this is because of dams. Beavers build dams along the river. This creates deep pools in the riverbed and slows the water down. Scientists say this is perfect for many different types of plants and animals! Many plants are growing near the beavers. Different types of animals are also becoming more and more in the river. Beavers also help make flooding less, scientists say. The beavers’ dams slow down the speed of the river, especially after heavy rain.
There are, however, some problems. Beavers gnaw (咬,啃) on trees and this can harm them. Their dams can also sometimes create floods on people’s land.
Beavers aren’t the only animals that are being reintroduced to the wild! In 2019, red squirrels were brought back to an area of the Scottish Highlands. Further away, the world’s rarest duck, the Madagascar pochard, is making a comeback. It was set free into the wild on the African island in 2019 and is doing well.
Who knows what other animals might be making a comeback?

Scientists recorded the brain activity of 50 volunteers. They scanned(扫描)the volunteers’ brains while they looked at 500 different pictures. The pictures that were chosen can cause very different responses(反应)to different persons. Scientists asked the volunteers about which foods and famous people that they loved and hated, and they used that information in the study. It showed that the volunteers’ brains all responded differently to each picture. When they saw different pictures, a special computer program was able to create a “brain print”. These “brain prints” allowed scientists to identify each volunteer with 100 percent accuracy.
Brain prints have better advantages than fingerprints. That’s because fingerprints can’t be changed. Once they are stolen, others can use them for anything they want. But brain prints can be changed. That’s because it changes when a person’s brain responds to different things, but the brain print is still special to them. It is impossible for anyone to steal a brain-print from someone since the person could then “reset” their brain prints. It means the person can change their brain print and make it ready to be used again.
Scientists think the brain print could one day be used in some areas to protect dangerous information.
Judge the following sentences true(T)or false(F)according to the passage.
1. The new technology to identify people is based on their brain activity.
2. The “brain prints”can help identify each volunteer without a single exception(例外).
3. From the passage, we learn that fingerprints can be changed.
4. The brain prints could one day be used in all areas to protect dangerous information.

①Microplastics(微塑料) are one of the largest environmental problems we face. Most microplastics come from larger pieces of plastic as they break apart. They do great harm to the environment as well as the health of animals and humans.
②However, it is really hard to clean up microplastics. They are small bits of plastic less than 5mm long. Because of their size, they are difficult to clean up. This is especially true for microplastics in the ocean. Besides, they are nearly everywhere. They’ve been found in our oceans, on the top of mountains, in some of the food we eat and even in the stomachs of some ocean animals. What should we do about microplastics?
③The good news is that scientists at Sichuan University in southwestern China have made great progress in dealing with microplastics.
④A kind of small robotic fish has been invented to help deal with the microplastics in water. They are programmed to make their way through water collecting microplastics as they go. Though these swimmers are only 15 mm long, they can travel very quickly as they clean. Wang Yuyan, a member of Sichan University’s research team said the robotic fish could be controlled by light. As they swim along, any nearby microplastics get drawn towards them and stick to them.
⑤Another special thing about the robotic fish is that both their shape and the material they are made out of are inspired by ocean life. The team use the material from the inside of shells(贝壳) to make their robotic fish. As well as attracting microplastics, the material can even heal(自愈) itself after being cut.
⑥Now that the team has shown that their idea works, they are going to keep working on it. The scientists hope that their tiny fish-shaped robots will be able to help deal with this global problem. They hope in the future they can create new kinds of robotic fish that can work in deeper waters and collect more microplastics.

The film Better Days tells a story about school bullying(校园欺凌). It's a topic that few Chinese movies have talked about before.
The movie is from the online long story Young and Beautiful. It tells the story of a high school student Chen Nian, who is bullied at school and later kills the girl that always bullies her by accident. The movie came out on Oct. 25. With two stars Zhou Dongyu and Yi Yangqianxi, the film earned 450 million yuan in its first three days, China Daily reported.
It has several scenes(场景)of serious violence(暴力). For example, in one scene, three girls follow Chen after school. They hit her hard, throw away her textbooks and clothes on her way home. What’s worse, they even take a bad video of her.
The movie is quite similar to what really happens at some schools now in our life. Since last year, China has caught 3,407 students for bullying and chafed(起诉)5,750.
However, it's not easy to solve this problem. As Chinese expert Li Yinhe wrote on Sina Weibo: the movie shows how complex(复杂的)social situations can be for teenagers. Schools, teachers, parents, police and the government must work together to end bullying.
The movie reminds us that while there may be a long way to go, we must have hope. “As long as you are hopeful, there will be someone helping you,” said Derek Tsang, the film's director.

At present, our spacecraft are too slow to carry large numbers of passengers to Mars—it would take months. With the development of technology, by the year 2100, the journey might only take about 20 minutes in spacecraft that travel at the speed of light! However, the spacecraft would travel really fast, so the journey to Mars might be quite uncomfortable. Many people would feel ill.
Humans can’t live without water, air or food. So far, nobody knows whether there would be enough water or air on Mars for people. Moreover, scientists are not sure whether plants could grow on Mars. Food would most probably be in the form of pills (药片) and would not be so tasty.
Compared with life on the earth, life on Mars would be better in some ways. People would have more space. They might live in houses with huge comfortable rooms. Also, robots would do most of their work so that they could have more time to relax. There would probably be no schools on Mars. Every student would study at online schools with “e-teachers”.
Life on Mars would be interesting and challenging. However, it may take hundreds of years to make it true. So the most important thing we need to do now is to protect our beautiful blue planet—the Earth!

Chinese people have used it in cooking and traditional Chinese medicine for a long time. With its special flavor, people usually put Chen Pi into tea drinks and Chinese dishes to make them more delicious, such as the famous Sichuan dish — orange chicken. Chen Pi is good for our health. If you cough, traditional Chinese doctors may give you medicine with Chen Pi.
People make Chen Pi from fresh tangerines. You can make it at home on your own. Make a few small cuts on the tangerines and take off the peel in one piece. Then, put it in the sun for one to three weeks. When the peel is dry, put it in an airtight container (密封的容器). Remember the container should be in a dry, dark place. Then wait for months to years and you will get your own Chen Pi. Usually, the flavor is better if you wait for a longer time. You can also buy it at stores. Japan, the host country of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, has promised to hold "the most innovative (创新的) Games ever organized." On July 24, 2019, the Olympic Committee (奥委会) expressed its first bright idea — medals (奖牌) were made from old phones and other electronics.
The idea was first introduced in 2016 by a group of young Japanese students. They wanted to raise awareness (意识) of the serious electronic waste produced by the country's tech-loving people who change their electronics very often. Japanese people threw away 650,000 tons of electronics every year, only about 100,000 tons of which are recycled.
To help the environment and raise the awareness, the Olympic Committee started the "Everyone's Medal" program in February 2017. The program encouraged people to drop off used electronics at specific location bins set up by Japan’s Environmental Sanitation Center. It seems to be hard to gather the 8 tons of materials needed to make the 5,000 Olympic and Paralympic medals. However, they had nothing to worry about. By the time the collection ended in March 2019, around 79,000 tons of used cellphones and other small electronics had been collected. In total, the program got 32 kilos of gold, 3,500 kilos of silver, and 2,200 kilos of bronze 一 more than enough to make every medal.
The Olympic Committee hopes the Tokyo 2020 medals will help raise awareness of the alarming increase in electronic waste 一 not just in Japan but worldwide 一 and cause people to rethink whether they need to change their electronics unnecessarily. As Kohei Uchimura, who got three Olympic gold medals, said: "Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic medals will be made out of people's thoughts for avoiding waste. I think there is an important message in this for the future."
Though Japan is the first Olympic host country to make all the medals using metals from used electronics, it is not the first to think of the idea. Brazil made about 30% of the silver and bronze medals for the 2016 Summer Olympics from recycled materials.
