Many students face common challenges when studying a new language. Many Chinese students find it difficult to learn English, but not Chinese, because Chinese is their mother language. As an English teacher in Beijing, Xu Feng knows his students usually meet various difficulties in English learning. Among them, remembering new words, understanding the grammar and spoken English seem to be the most difficulties for students. How to deal with the difficulties in English learning? Here are Xu Feng’s suggestions:
First, copy new words on pieces of paper, stick them on the walls in the bedroom or living room, and read the words aloud when seeing them. Change the words often.
Next, focus on understanding and practicing the basic grammar rules before moving on to the more difficult ones.
Finally, practice speaking English as much as possible, whether it’s with foreigners, classmates, friends or teachers. Also, watching English TV shows or movies, listening to English songs, and reading English books are good ways to improve spoken English.
In a word, English learning is a challenging but rewarding (回报) experience. Remembering that practice makes perfect and never give up. We can achieve our language learning goals.

April 20 Chinese Language Day Chinese is one of the six official working languages of the United Nations(UN). Chinese Language Day has been celebrated since 2010. The UN holds colorful activities on this day. This helps spread Chinese. In a school, you may hear a student saying, “I’m quite interested in Chinese,” but you are not in China. You are in a foreign country. Like the student, many foreigners are learning Chinese. But it’s not easy. People have to memorize about 6,000 Chinese characters before they can do basic(基础的) reading and writing. So, for foreigners, it’s hard to memorize them. However, Chinese is more popular around the world today. The long history and colorful culture of China attract(吸引) many foreigners to learn Chinese. With the rapid development, China is staying ahead in many fields and is playing its role in the world. Chinese is becoming a global(全球的) language and its popularity has risen around the world. Many countries set up Chinese courses in their schools. For example, in the UK, schools encourage their students to study Chinese. The increase in popularity of Chinese has been surprising. Just like the foreigners do, we also learn foreign languages. Different languages carry different cultures. So exchanges are necessary. By learning a foreign language, we can have a useful tool of communication. More importantly, it will help us experience a new culture. |

3. Why is it difficult for foreigners to learn Chinese?
4. Which country encourages students to study Chinese according to the passage?

The word is “almost always a positive word that expresses our admiration for people who keep going in difficult situations”, wrote the editors. Losing Our Language
The Internet is a place where we can talk freely. However, young people’s language competence (能力) is becoming poorer because they pay little attention to the way they talk on the Internet. More than 76% of young people in China say they feel their Chinese language skills are becoming poor.
Internet memes(表情包) are changing their communication habits (习惯). When they communicate on the Internet, they usually use Internet memes. For example, when one sees something funny, he will just use “hahaha”, or use the “cry-laugh” emoji (表情). Also, “copy” culture is getting popular. People often pick up expressions from the Internet without much thinking.
If this goes on, it may do harm to our way of thinking. When young people always choose to use emoji without thinking, it means they become too lazy to show their real feelings. If they keep using emoji in this way, it may be difficult for them to use the words correctly.
To improve our language skills, experts (专家) suggest that we should try to develop language logic (逻辑). They also suggest that we should read more good books. Besides, keep using different kinds of words to show our feelings. It’s another good way to practice our language.

Life in Grade 8 is busy. Among Chinese, math and English, I am fond of
Last week, a colleague (同事) of mine told me she had just spent two hours explaining to her students how to use the word “as”. I asked her if she thought, after all of her great effort, her students would be able to use the word correctly in everyday conversations. Her answer, interestingly, was, “Probably not.”
I began to wonder whether it was worth it to spend so much time teaching grammar rules to students. Indeed, grammar is important. It controls how words are put together in order to form sentences. For years, many teachers have been tirelessly explaining grammar rules to their students before giving them plenty of exercises to do.
In recent years, however, more and more studies have found that, for most language learners, studying grammar rules is not that important. Some researchers even consider it to be a waste of time. This has left some young teachers to wonder: Should I teach grammar to my students?
In my opinion, students should be taught grammar. However, I think grammar shouldn’t be considered as a separate “skill” or “course”. For the past two years, I have created situations in which my students feel a need to use good grammar in order to communicate properly in English. I leave them to discover the grammar rules on their own. Meanwhile, I encourage them to use English as much as possible outside of the classroom. I believe that, to become good at English, the most important thing is to spend time practising speaking it.
I won’t ever spend two hours explaining a grammar rule. It will only make my students fall asleep rather than improve their English.
1. How long did the writer’s colleague spend explaining how to use the word “as”?2. Why does the writer think grammar is important?
3. What do some researchers think of grammar learning?
4. Does the writer think grammar is a separate “skill” or “course”?
5. What teaching methods used by the writer do you think are helpful?

Learning Is Like a Journey
We can remember some important times in our lives. Some things have become good memories. The memories are always in the corner of our mind.
When I was in kindergarten(幼儿园), I had many toys and friends. They made me laugh and cry. The teachers taught us many songs and games. We played all day. Although we did not know what learning was at that time, we were learning every day.
When I was in primary school, I was excited to learn school subjects. My favorite subject was science. I remembered on the first day our science teacher told us the sun was like a big fire ball. We were quite surprised and kept our mouths open. We began to wonder at the secret of nature. Later many other things came to our ears. We began to learn carefully.
When I was ten years old, I began to read newspapers, keep a diary, visit museums and make many friends. Every day was something new, interesting and exciting.
Now I am in middle school. Happily, I am still learning. It is like a journey to me. I have learned a lot, but there’s still a long way for me to go. I hope to become a learned(有学问的)person some day.

You may know about “junk food” like French fries. But do you know about “junk sleep”? A British survey shows that there are many electronic products in teenagers’ bedrooms. They are influencing teenagers sleep badly.
The survey was done among 1,000 British kids from 12 to 16. It found that 50% of them got just 4 to 7 hours’ sleep every day. But doctors say they need 8 to 9 hours’ sleep. Almost 25% of the kids said that they often fell asleep while they were watching TV, listening to music or using other electronic products.
“This is very worrying,” said Dr. Chris, a British professor, “We call it junk sleep, it means you don’t get enough sleep and that the quality of the sleep is low, too. If you don’t get a good rest, you won’t do well in school the next day.”
The survey found that quite a few of the kids felt tired each day because of “junk sleep”, especially girls between 13 and 16. Nearly all the teenagers have a phone, music player or TV in their bedrooms. And lots of them even have all the three.
Dr. Chris suggested that parents should help their children keep away from electronic products, and that teenagers should spend less time on electronic products.

The breaks at West Middle School are an exciting time for the kids during classes. Teachers usually get the kids out and to stretch (拉伸) their legs after 1 hour and 30-minute classes. However, not all the students are happy with the time spent outside.
According to a survey that went out last week at Ross School, most students enjoyed taking a break. However, some students said it depended on the class and day. A 9th grader named Martin preferred to stay in the classroom rather than have a break because he needed to finish a lot of school work. Then the magic question was asked: how long is the perfect break?
After investigating (调查) more than 500 students, they thought a 20-minute break was perfect because it gave enough time to relax from the long classes. The survey also showed that about 320 students found the breaks too short! Nearly 160 students thought the breaks were already perfect and only 4% didn’t get breaks or thought that they were too long.
The survey also asked students what they did during the breaks. Most of them said that they walked around the school and did something they liked. We asked how they could improve the breaks, and many students said to make them longer.
“Although the breaks are not as long as students expect, I suggest students should try to make full use of the time to enjoy themselves,” the head master from Chapin School said. “Now many school are considering whether the breaks should be extended (延长) between 20 minutes and 25 minutes,” he added.

Who doesn’t have a clingy (缠人的) friend? You know, that person who often calls, texts (发信息) and sends emails. He often needs your care or help.
Have you ever thought about turning off your phone and being alone? But you shouldn’t do that to a friend. Here is some good advice.
♦ Give Yourself Some Time If you really need some time for yourself, just explain to your clingy friend that you want some time of your own. He may understand and give you some space. |
♦ Suggest An Activity for Your Friend If you’re tired of different get-togethers, then you could ask your clingy friend to do something alone. If you both like sports, you could tell him to have a try at the new gym. If he likes your suggestion, but asks you to go along, just explain that you’ve already visited the gym. Mention that you enjoy the gym. If you’re lucky, he’ll try it and like it. |
♦ Introduce Your Clingy Friend to Others It may be difficult for your clingy friend to meet new people. If so, introduce him to others with the same interests. He may make some new friends. |

As a teacher, you need to create rules for your classroom. There must be some rules in your class, but how can you make your students want to follow them? If you have difficulty in it, why not try letting your students join in the process of making rules? Here are steps about how to do it.
First, you should make a list of the key points that you think are important. The following list is a good example.
Treat others in the way you would like to be treated.
Respect all your teachers and classmates.
Laugh with anyone, but laugh at no one.
Pay attention to your own learning.
Come to class on time.
Hand in your homework on time.
And then, through thoughtful discussion, work with your students to create a set of rules expressed in the language. Try to make those points clearer and more specific(明确的). The reason for this is because it’s too hard to remember a long list! The next step is to decide with your students what kind of punishment will be given for breaking those rules.
Finally, choose a special class to tell your students these rules, just like giving a daily lesson. Discuss each rule, explain the idea behind it, and ask for examples of how it could be broken. This step is very important, because it can call students’ attention to the rules. Remind your students to follow the rules that they join in making. Putting up the rules on the wall of the classroom is a good idea to remind students to follow them.
1. Who is the passage written for?2. What is the first step in the process of making rules?
3. How many key points that the writer thinks are important are listed?
4. Why is it important to choose a special class to tell the rules?
5. Where should the classroom rules be hung?

At the beginning of each year, many people make their resolutions. That’s because they hope to improve their life in the coming year. So do all my family. According to a survey, students’ safety has become a big problem. Nearly 50% of students say they are worried about robbery (抢劫) on the way to and from school. Now in main big cities in China, some schools have taught an unusual lesson: self-protection. Students like this lesson because there are no exams or boring classes. And they can learn how to save lives and know how to stop danger before it really happens.
Chen Haoyu, a teacher at Beijing No. 25 Middle School, gives young students advice on how to deal with danger.
If you are robbed
Keep calm. If you cannot cry for help or runaway, give the robber (抢劫犯) your money. Try to remember what the robber looks like and tell the police later.
If you are in a traffic accident
If a car hits you, you should remember the car number. If it is a bicycle, try to call parents before you let the rider go. This is because you don’t know how seriously you are hurt.
If it is raining hard and there is lightning
Don’t stay in high places and stay away from trees.
When there is a fire
Get away as fast as you can. Put wet things on your body and try to find an exit. Do not take the lift.
