The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous buildings in Australia. This summer holiday, I got the chance to visit it and found out what made this building so great.
As our guide told us, the Sydney Opera House was built with a kind of self-cleaning material. This kind of material is very rare (稀有的) even today.
First, we visited the Drama Hall. We learned about the designer of the Sydney Opera House—Jorn Utzon. He was the winner of an international design competition. However, he designed the Opera House according to his own tastes, which caused several problems. The project was completed 10 years late. The cost of building was over budget (预算). Utzon didn’t get to see the house after it was built.
Then, we visited the Joan Sutherland Theater which is the second largest theater. The theater was refurbished (翻新) in 2017 with new high-tech equipment (设备). Finally, we arrived at the largest theater—the Concert Hall. It has hosted many kinds of performances, from classical to rock music. A few years ago, a sports event was even held there.
Before we finished the tour, the guide told us the rest of Utzon’s story. In 1966, Utzon had an argument with the government and refused to give in. He had to leave the country. It was a hard time in his life. But many years later, people understood him and saw the building as the most popular work.
From this tour, I learned that the Opera House is not only a famous building but a holder of history and culture.
1. What was the Sydney Opera House built with?
2. Did the Sydney Opera House cost more than it was expected?
3. When was the Joan Sutherland Theater refurbished?
4. Why did Jorn Utzon leave Australia?
5. How does the writer like the Sydney Opera House?

Two Research Reports
Report One
People with sweet childhood memories, especially good relationships with parents will have less stress and fewer diseases after they grow up, according to a research in the magazine Health Paychology.
“We found that good memories seem to have a good effect on health. Perhaps they can reduce stress or help us keep healthy choices in life,” said the researchers of the study.
The researchers used more than 22,000 people in two studies. The first period followed adults in their mid 40s for 18 years and the second period followed adults 50 and over for 6 years.
In both groups, people who remembered higher levels of love from their mothers as children experienced better physical health later in life. Those who had memories with more support from their fathers also had less feelings of sadness.
Report Two
Keeping away from depression(低落的情绪) has become the main goal for many people nowadays, but hugging the depression may be more helpful, a new study reports.
Many people may experience the time when they are sad or feel they can’t enjoy anything. They hate being weak. So they hide their true feelings. But the report says this behavior can even make the depression worse. The more attention people pay on happiness, the more disappointed they might probably be.
Researchers call on the people to have a more friendly and patient attitude(态度) about the depression. Only in this way will people not be afraid of it. They will be more likely to work out the problem, and then take actions to deal with them.

Dear classmates,

Do you like a small plant? The study shows that a small plant can improve our memory (记忆力) and make us happier. Even the small plants on your desk may have a more effect on you than you might realize. The small plants can help you to think more clearly. Studies have shown that the small plants could improve your concentration (注意力) by up to 20% and improve your ability to remember information by 15—20%. Plants can also reduce CO2 and improve air quality.

Have you heard of 5G? These new networks are just coming. This big change will not only make our mobile Internet faster. It will also deeply change our lives.
5G networks are about 100 times faster than 4G. This means you can download a movie in seconds using 5G. Also, VR games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay (缓冲) of 5G will make the games feel even more real.
5G will also bring us safer self-driving cars. These cars can send signals to each other. They also “talk” to traffic lights and road sensors (传感器). 5G will allow cars to react (反应) even faster than human drivers.
5G also makes the Internet of Things ( IoT, 物联网 ) possible. IoT is a large network that connects everything to the Internet. Smart homes are part of it. For example, with IoT, your refrigerator could order eggs online when it notices that there are no eggs left inside.

Dear Henry,

What about your plan?·Could you share it with me?
The British Museum is the biggest one in the world. Inside, you feel smaller than usual. There are about a hundred things in the museum to see: Clocks which have told the time for six hundred years; Roman money; some of the earliest books in the world, including Shakespeare’s own works…
The British Museum was set up nearly 300 years ago by a doctor, Sir Hans Sloane. The man liked to collect things such as books, drawings, clothes, money, animals, flowers, and also hoped that his things would be well kept and so visited by people after his death. His wish came true, and the museum opened in 1759, six years after Sir Hans Sloane died.
Later, more antiques (古董) arrived at the museum, more books, old and new, came to it, and more people wanted to visit it. The museum had a famous round Reading Room. There was something unusual in the room. Cool air came up through small holes in the tables. Hot air flowing under the floor kept readers’ feet warm. Since its opening, many famous men have written and studied there, like Karl Marx. And the library is growing faster and faster because it attracts increasing number of tourists each year.
It is now open every day of the year, except for two holidays (New Year’s Day and Christmas). Entrance (入场) is free. There are lots of special exhibitions and every day there are different films and talks. Small machines tell you about the museum as you walk around it, you can look and listen at the same time. Last summer, my dream of visiting Beijing finally came true. The trip was really wonderful. There were many famous historical sites to see in Beijing, such as the Summer Palace, the Palace Museum, the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall. My family and I could only stay in Beijing for six days, so we had to choose the places to go wisely. For me, a visit to the Place Museum was a must. The Palace Museum, also famous as the Forbidden City, is in the center of Beijing. Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties once lived there. With its red walls and yellow roofs, the buildings stand out all the time. We also visited the Great Wall, one of the Eight Wonders of the World. The wall is over 8,800 kilometers. The emperors asked their people to build the Great Wall to save the whole country from the enemies of the north. We took lots of photos there.
