Every spring, there are sports meetings at many middle schools. When students on the playground crowd into a circle and shout loudly, “One, two, one, two.” Do you know what game it is? It is tug of war (拔河).
Tug of war is a team sport between two teams at each end of a rope. It first came into being in China 2, 400 years ago. It is very popular in China and many other countries. But in other countries, their tug-of-war match is not the same as ours. They have eight men for each team, while we may have the match between two sides with equal number of men or women players. Of course, they are usually tall, strong and heavy.
For a tug-of-war match, we need a long thick rope. Each team stands at one end of the rope, holding it. There is a white line in the middle of the field. Then they try to pull the center of the rope to each of their own sides. The winning team is the one that pulls the other over the line.
Tug of war was once an Olympic sporting event. It lasted until 1920. Though it isn’t an Olympic sport now, people in many countries like playing it very much.
1. Tug of war first came into being in China 2, 500 years ago.2. In other countries, a tug-of-war team has eight men players.
3. The team that pulls the other over the line is the losing team.
4. Now tug of war is still an Olympic sport and many people like playing it.

Fight to the finish
In a match that was called “one of the greatest fights I’ve ever seen in my life” by fight commentator (评论员) Joe Rogan, Chinese MMA (mixed martial arts, 综合格斗) fighter Zhang Weili beat Polish fighter Joanna Jedrzejczyk on March 7.
Zhang, 30, and Jedrzejczyk, 32, squared off (打斗) in Las Vegas, with Zhang successfully defending her strawweight (草量级) UFC (终极格斗冠军赛) title. The fight was highly anticipated, as both women are known as top fighters among their peers.
Zhang’s training was cut by the novel coronavirus outbreak. It forced her to travel from Beijing to Thailand and then to Abu Dhabi before arriving in Vegas about a week later than planned, according to China Daily. Worse still, Zhang was offended (激怒) by a post on social media in which Jedrzejczyk seemed to make fun of the outbreak. In a mock poster that Jedrzejczyk posted, she wears a gas mask (防毒面具) standing behind Zhang.
Although the post was later deleted, Zhang said that she was fired up to make Jedrzejczyk pay for the tasteless joke in the octagon(八角格斗场).
In the end, Zhang scored a narrow win over Jedrzejczyk, with both ending up in the hospital due to the intensity (激烈程度) of their fight.
“All fighters deserve respect from one another in the octagon. I don' t like people hitting each other with trash talk," said Zhang following her victory. “We go for the championship with our punches (拳头) but we shall never end up being remembered as only talking with violence (暴力)."
“Now the virus situation is not just affecting China, but the whole world. I hope everybody in the world can stand together to fight the virus with a united effort,” she said.

To remember her best friend who died of cancer nearly 10 years ago, Fredette decided to offer services to those in Orange Country who are less lucky than she is.
She began with the easy idea of collecting donated(捐赠) Build-A-Bears, the popular toy animal that is made by children themselves in the stores’ workshops. Fredette then gave them as presents to the homeless children in California during the holiday season.

Shaking Hands
Shaking hands has been done since at least the second century BC. It’s a symbol of trust. Nowadays we usually shake the right hands. But in the old time, people also shook left hands. The world record for handshakes is held by a man from New Jersey, who shook 11,000 hands in a single day.
Thumbs(大拇指) Up
The thumbs up sign is thought to come from contests in Rome. There people decided whether the fighter would live or die by thumbs up or thumbs down. In fact it came from an old English saying “Here’s my thumb on it” which was used to seal a bargain (达成交易). Businessmen held their thumbs up and extended them, until the two touched each other.
Rock, Paper, Scissors
Rochambeau, or rock, paper, scissors is played all over the world to solve some difficult disagreements. A judge in Florida ordered people in a case to use this game to solve it. In Indonesia, it is earwig(蜈蚣), human, and elephant. The earwig drives the elephant mad. The human killed the earwig, and the elephant killed the human. If you know why it is called Rochambeau, please let me know. It’s still a mystery.

One of the most famous volunteers in the world was Mother Teresa. She could be the best volunteer because she gave her life to helping the poorest people of Calcutta. She helped the homeless, cared for the sick, gave out food, and became the mother of those without families.
Now more and more teenagers actively look for volunteering opportunities, too. They volunteer because they think it will be fun or they will learn something. They also like the idea of being helpful to others, even if it is just handing out books for the teacher. As they get older, these reasons are still the same, but there are other important reasons for volunteering such as learning on-the-job, getting work experience, and improving their social life.
All volunteers bring joy to the people they help in so many ways. They might read books to the blind, fix up broken homes, find ways to get water for villages. Could you be a volunteer? What kind of volunteer work could you do? There is someone in the world who needs you.
