I enjoy reading, which helps me improve my English a lot. How to enjoy reading like me? Here are some suggestions for you.

Firstly, it’s important to choose a book which is the right level for you. If you are just starting out with English, don’t try to read a 600-page classic novel!

Secondly, although having a dictionary at hand to look up words is useful, you should try not to translate word by word, or you will soon get bored. Look up the words that you think are difficult to understand the text and learn them in a sentence. This will make it more likely that you will remember them in the future.

Finally, interest is important but perseverance (毅力) is the key. Although at first it may seem that reading has become a chore, you will soon get into the story and you will end up not being able to put the book down! The feeling of finishing a book in a different language is very satisfying. If you finish one, don’t stop there! The more you read, the more vocabularies you will learn and the more you will become familiar (熟悉) with sentence structures and common phrases.

If you want to learn English well, I hope you will pick up more books in English from now on.

文章大意:本文是Molly向Abby求助如何理解英语单词和句子以及Abby给出的方法。
【推荐1】阅读短文,然后根据内容回答问题。
To: Abby
From: Molly
Dear Abby,

I feel sad these days. I find it hard to understand English words and sentences. For a schoolgirl like me, that’s a real pain.

Please help me!

Molly

To: Molly
From: Abby
Dear Molly.

I have known about your problem. As your English teacher, I can understand you quite well. There is no need to worry about it too much because the problem is common and can be solved. My suggestions are as follows.

First, try to understand words in phrases (短语) or sentences. For example, don’t just learn the single word “mind”. Learn it in a phrase like “change one’s mind”. That means “change one’s idea”. You can also learn the word in a sentence like “Keep in mind what I said”. That means “Remember what I said”.

Second, pay attention to different parts of speech (词性) of a word. The same word can be used as a noun (名词) in one sentence and it can be used as a verb (动词) in another. Take the word “back” as an example. The following two sentences “Molly has her mum at her back” and “Molly’s mum backs her up” have the same meaning. They both mean “Molly’s mum supports her”.

I hope my suggestions will be helpful to you. Wish you good luck!

Abby

文章大意:本文介绍了“费曼学习法”的作用,以及使用方法。
【推荐3】请阅读下面的非连续性文本,根据语篇内容,回答问题。

You study every day and you must have many learning methods. Which one is the best? It is believed the Feynman Technique (费曼学习法) can help you learn faster and more effectively (有效地).

What is the Feynman Technique?

Developed by Richard Feynman, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, the Feynman Technique is a study method for students to learn through teaching. This study method can be used to memorize and understand difficult topics. It can also be used with other common study methods like re-reading textbooks or reviewing notes.

Why is the Feynman Technique effective?

For one, it makes students review and analyze, which can help to understand knowledge at a higher level than just memorizing. Furthermore, it requires students to connect the knowledge with their experiences. Re-reading textbooks and reviewing notes are passive (被动的) activities. In the Feynman Technique, explaining and simplifying forces the learner to learn actively.

How can you use the Feynman Technique?

If you want to use the Feynman Technique to study better, follow these five simple steps.

Step 1
Choose a topic you want to learn.
You can use the technique for any topic. But it’s most often used to study topics related to science because the step of making it simple works best for these topics.
Step 2
Explain the topic as if teaching a sixth-grader.
The second step is the heart of the Feynman Technique: explaining the topic simply enough so a sixth-grader can understand it. This step will help break down difficult topics into their most basic parts.
Step 3
________
You need to try to find out what can be improved in your explanation. Maybe there is something that you can’t explain simply. When possible, you can explain to a real sixth-grader and test whether he or she can understand it.
Step4
Improve your explanation and make it simple.
Think about all the knowledge gaps (鸿沟), and other areas of improvement you found, and use those to improve your explanation.
Step 5
Repeat the steps until you’ve mastered the topic.
Keep going through each step until you’re fully satisfied with your explanation. The Feynman Technique works best when you repeat. Often, you’ll need to go through each step at least twice for the method to be effective.

1. Who created the Feynman Technique?

2. What is the difference between the Feynman Technique and reviewing notes?

3. What does the writer want to show through Chart I?
