American schools begin in September after a long summer holiday. There are two terms in a school year. The first term is from September to January, and the second term is from February to June. In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all — one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degree; they refuse to do what they think “low” work; and, in fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor; we can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns...
In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education and be considered valuable to society.

This was a typical routine of a surgery (外科手术). However, there was one more equipment — a piano. It was the first time ever in the world that a piano had entered the operating room. My 15 workmates and I were operating on a 10-year-old patient.
Occupying a corner of the room, the grand was formed by Emiliano, a musician. To the soft background of a piano played live, we performed the surgery to remove a turmor (肿瘤) from the boy’s stomach.
Everything went well. There was no complication (并发症). A magical atmosphere of complete peace was brought into the operating room. When passing medical supplies among the staff, I could totally sense it. Even more magically, in smooth music, we cooperated better, as if our minds were connected by the notes.
Although the boy was asleep during the four-hour operation, at times we did notice the corners of his mouth curved up. Somehow, even under total anesthesia (麻醉), he could feel the joy of music. When the notes broke off, monitors (监视器) showed a sudden change in his brain activity pattern. I prayed the music could relieve anxiety and pain of the skinny body.
Finally, the surgery was completed. Our little patient was doing well. My team described the process as amazing and moving.
Later that day, the boy awoke to find himself in his hospital bed. “How do you feel now, my little man?” I asked with a gentle smile while examining his wound for signs of infection.
“I’m fine, doctor.” Our brave little patient relied. “But did I hear the music? Yes, I heard it!”

For example, they may say that you will go blind (看不见的) from reading in the dark, but you could make up for it by eating a lot of carrots. This is just one of the wrong ideas you may have heard of. Here are some scientific explanations (解释) for three mistakes the people often make about eyes. Let's take a look.
Can eating carrots improve (提高) your eyesight (视力)?
Carrots are rich in Vitamin A, which is important for our eyes. Vitamin A helps the eyes to make light into signals, helping people see in low light conditions (条件). However, eating more carrots doesn't help you see better. A certain minimum amount (一定数量) will help, but a large number of carrots will not allow you to get rid of (摆脱) your glasses.
If your parents have bad eyesight, will you have bad eyesight, too?
Myopia (近视) can be passed from parents to children. A study showed that if both parents are myopia, there's a 33 %~60 % chance (机会) that the child is myopia. For children who have one parent with myopia, the chance is 23%~40%, and it's down to 6%~15% for kids with non-myopia parents. So no matter how bad your parents' eyesight is, you still have a chance having good eyesight.
Is it true that people who are color blind can't see colors?
Color blindness (色盲) doesn't mean that someone can't see colors at all, like a black and white movie. It means that it is difficult for someone to tell certain colors apart, usually green and red or blue and yellow. Our eyes have color cone cells (视锥细胞) that sense different wavelengths of light. If these cells don't work well, color blindness occurs.
1. According to the passage, which is the RIGHT idea about eating carrots?A.Eating carrots doesn't help people see better. |
B.People need to eat as many carrots as possible. |

HONG KONG—Average home price have increased by73% since the end of 2008.This huge jump in home price has pushed more and more low income families into sub-divided flats.
What is a sub-divided flat? It is a flat that is divided into parts, so that it can house more than one family. Many sub-divided flats do not meet fire-safety standards (标准).For example, some flat owners have turned fire escape exits into part of their own rooms.
In June 2011, a fire happened in an old eight-storey building and left four people dead. That building was filled with sub-divided flats, some as small as 100 square feet. Many people believed that sub-divided flats were one of the causes for the accident. Since then, the government has paid more attention to the housing problem.
The best way to lower housing prices is to increase the number of flats; however, the best way may not be the easiest way. To lower housing prices, the government said that 20,000 new flats must be added every year for the next ten years.
Even if government could provide land for 20,000 flats a year, we would not know how much that would affect the housing market. One thing is for certain, Hong Kong’s housing problem will not soon go away and will be with us for a very long time.

【推荐3】Last year in the UK at least 45 people died and 900 more were injured in car accidents where drivers were using their mobile phones. Yet many people continue to use them while driving even though it's dangerous.
Research has shown that it is difficult to concentrate on driving and talking at the same time. It can even be more dangerous than driving after drinking too much. A recent study found that when drivers were talking on their mobile phones, their stopping times were 30 percent slower than when they had drunk too much—and nearly 50 percent slower than when they were driving normally. It also found that drivers talking on mobile phones were less able to control their cars than drunk drivers.
And talking isn't even the most serious problem, texting is. Unbelievably, another recent study reported that 22 % of adults admitted they had sent a text message while driving at least once in the past month. An average text message takes 90 seconds to write and send. That means for one and a half minutes a driver is looking at their phone's screen and not at the road. The arrival of new smart phones such as the iPhone will only make matters worse as they will allow users to do more things than ever before.
Using a mobile phone while driving puts others' lives at risk. No matter how well we drive, if another driver is not being professional or careful, we are put in danger by their actions. Such drivers are selfish, careless and should have their driving licences (驾照) cancelled.
There is no doubt that mobile phones call be fun and are extremely useful, especially when you're in trouble. But there is no need to use them while driving. Just wait until you stop or you will probably get into trouble of your own.

Traffic accidents killed more than 104,000 people in China last year. Chinese cities have more cars than ever. Drivers and pedestrians (行人) must work together to make the streets safer. The law has new rules for drivers and pedestrians. Drivers have to slow down when they are close to crosswalks. If people are in a crosswalk, cars must stop to let them pass.
There are rules for bus drivers, too. If bus drivers smoke, drink or make phone calls while driving, they can be fined. Buses that carry too many people are also against the law. Pedestrians will have to walk more safely under the new law. They must cross streets at crosswalks. Also, they shouldn’t climb over the fences (栅栏) along streets.
Do you bike to school? It’s not a good idea to carry classmates on the back. You could be fined 50 yuan. And stay in the bike lane (慢车道) when you’re riding. The big roads are for cars and buses.
Do you like to ride your uncle’s motorbike? When you put on your helmet (头盔), ask him to put one on, too. People on motorbikes must wear helmets, the new law says. If they don’t, they’ll have to pay 200 yuan.
Do you ride in cars often? Don’t forget to put on your seat belt (安全带), even if you’re going for a short taxi ride. It could save your life.
If you see a hit-and –run (肇事逃逸), tell the police. They may give you a reward (奖赏). And don’t be afraid to help people to the hospital if they are hurt in an accident. Don’t worry about money. The new law says that doctors must take care of them even if they can’t pay right away.
