I thought that must have been a joke. I saw the cleaning woman every day. She was short and about 50 years old. She had dark hair. But how would I know her name?
I had never talked with her before. In fact, I had never even thought about talking to her. I asked myself if I was a little cold-hearted to her. I looked at my paper and started to feel quite guilty about that. Finally, I finished my paper, leaving the last one unanswered. Before the test ended, one student asked if the question would be counted in (被计算在内) our grades.
“Of course,” the teacher said. “In your life, you will meet many people. They are all important. They need your care, though you just smile (微笑) and say hello to them.”
I’ll never forgot that lesson. Everyone needs my care and I should get to know all of the people who work and live around me. That was, maybe, the most important lesson of my life. I also later learned that the cleaning woman’s first name is Hannah.

“Mom,” she shouted, “I think I will mow (割) the lawn (草坪).” Her mom ran into the yard and said, “Oh no, you don’t. You’re too young to mow the lawn.”
“I’m fourteen years old and know how to do it,” Jessie said. “Besides, it would help Dad out, and he won’t have to worry about it over the weekend.”
Mom thought for a while and then decided to let Jessie give it a try. After all, she was home and would keep an eye on her. Jessie already knew how to start the lawn mower from watching her dad. Jessie checked the gas (汽油) to make sure it was full, and put on her gardening gloves to protect (保护) her hands. Mom watched from the kitchen window. Jessie really did know how to mow the lawn. She was very careful around the flowers and trees. When she finished, she felt so good, but she was so hot. Mom brought her some ice tea and said, “You sure did a great job. Dad will be very surprised.”
Later that day, Dad came home and said to Jessie’s mom, “You didn’t have to mow the lawn. I was going to do it on Saturday. It looks great. Thanks.”
“I didn’t mow it. Jessie did.”
“Wow, our little girl is growing up!” Dad told Jessie what a great job she had done.
“It was fun, and I will do it again next week,” said Jessie.
The neighbor next door came by and asked Jessie if she wanted to mow his lawn and make some money. “Sure!” said Jessie. Jessie began mowing his lawn. Two other neighbors asked so, then another three. When students at Olathe East High School in the US got their CPR (心肺复苏术) training this winter, 15-year-old Seth Johnson paid close attention. Two weeks after his training, Seth helped his elder sister Claire use CPR to save their dad when he had a heart attack (心脏病发作).
That day, their father Mark was in their home when he suddenly felt quite sick. Then, things got worse. Hearing their dad shouting, Claire ran in and helped Seth pull their dad off the couch and lay him flat (平的). Claire called 911 and then started CPR.
Claire put her hands on the center of her dad’s chest (胸部) and began to push hard and fast about twice per second. She pushed on his chest 30 times, then gave two rescue breaths (人工呼吸).
Claire once took the same training course Seth did at school. After about four minutes of heavy chest compressions (胸部按压), she was tired and Seth had to take over. About two minutes later, medical workers arrived. Mark spent five days in hospital, but has since fully recovered.
Recent studies have shown that CPR saves less than 20 percent of people in these kinds of situations. But experts say it’s still worth trying. And the earlier it’s given, the more successful it’s likely to be. The American Heart Association has encouraged more schools to offer CPR training. As of last year, 38 states had laws asking students to learn it.
