Fu Lei's Family Letters is a book of letters written by Chinese translator and writer Fu Lei to his elder son Fu Cong. Between 1954 and 1966. Fu Cong spent a lot of time away from home to train as a piano player. As a result, writing letters became Fu Lei's usual way of communicating with his elder son. Fu Min, Fu Lei's younger son edited (编辑) the letters and the book was published in 1981.
The book is a full display of Fu Lei's family tradition and value. To Fu Lei, education is not only a family matter, but also something with great social (社会的) value. The purpose of education of a person, as shown in Fu Lei's Family Letters ,is to make that person useful to society. In his letter on 26 January 1955, Fu Lei praised his son Fu Cong after winning a piano competition. Fu Lei wrote,"We are happy because you make your country proud. We are even happier because you bring joy to people through music! I am so excited when I think about your future. You will progress endlessly and serve more people, encourage them and heal them.
In his family letters,Fu Lci also advised his son to read famous Chinese texts. When reading these books, he told Fu Cong to fully understand their meanings and connect ideas with feeling, for that would help him become a better person. To Fu Lei, learning to be a good person comes before any academic (学术的) training. On 27 December 1954, Fu Lci wrote,"Everyone should be a good person before becoming an expert in any area. Otherwise, that person will not achieve much, no matter how knowledgeable he or she is.”

It is difficult for parents to teach their children to help with the housework.
Shatian School in Shanghai is making its students do housework for their parents. It’s their homework. The third graders must learn how to make the bed, the sixth graders wash the clothes, and the seventh and the eighth graders cook meals.
Many parents think it’s a good way for children to try the housework, but they don’t know how to teach their children to do it at home. With the following ideas, you can really get your children to help at home.
If you want to make your children think that they can do everything quite right, please don’t scold (批评) them but often give them praise (表扬) at home. Talk more about what they do right, not about what they do wrong. If your children finish some difficult work, give them a Sunday trip or a ball game with Dad as a reward (奖励).
1. A sixth grader must learn to cook meals.2. Parents should give praise often when the children do the housework.
3. There is no way to make children help do the housework.
4. None of the parents wants their children to do the housework.
5. Doing the housework is the students’ homework in Shatian School.

②Searching online for the answer may get you a better grade on the homework. But it won’t help you learn. Guessing is a better way to learn, a new study shows.
③Arnold Glass found this by analyzing (分析) the grades on his students’ tests from 2008 to 2017. For many years, students had done best on the exam. But by the late 2010s, many students were doing worse on the exam than on the homework. In 2008, most students performed better on their homework than on the exam. But by 2017, more than half of the students performed this way.
④Glass wondered, “How could it be?” So he thought about it for those years. One big thing was the rise of smart phones. They were not common in 2008. But now almost everyone has one. So it would be easier and faster today to find any homework question online. But students can’t use phones during an exam.
⑤Scientists agree that a better learning way for any student is getting answers on your own. If you find and then copy the right answer, you’re taking the easy way out. And that is wasting an important chance to practice. It may take a few more minutes to think of an answer on your own, and then make sure if it’s right. But that’s the way you’ll learn more.

We went to visit a friend in hospital last week. When Jack’s mobile phone rang, it was my mother calling from my home. She asked if I had lost my mobile phone. I checked my bag. It was gone!
I used Jack’s phone to call my number. A boy answered it. “I found your phone in the mall!” he said excitedly. “I’m Rhys. I have been trying to find you, but because it was getting late, I decided to leave.” He gave me the address of a coffee shop near his home.
Later that evening, I went to meet him there. I was afraid to go alone, worrying he was a cheat, so Jack came along. After driving 10 km, we got to the coffee shop.
As soon as I saw him, my worries were gone. Rhys was just a young boy. “How did you tell my mom?” I asked. He explained that when he found my mobile phone by the roadside, he started calling people in my list of contacts (通讯录). But they only had my mobile phone number. That didn’t help. He’d called many names, starting with the letter A. Finally he got Adam, one of my friends. Adam called my house.
I was happy to get my phone back with all the phone numbers, messages and photos in it. I thanked Rhys and offered him some money, but he refused. He’s really a good boy.

On the way home, I was both angry and sad. “I didn’t make the team,” I said loudly. “How did Alex make the team? He is so slow that he can’t keep up with a turtle! Why is Jimmy a better choice than me? He just stands around flapping(拍打)his arms!”
“Adam!” my mom said, cutting me off. “Why don’t you just stop and think? Maybe you need a little more practice.”
Suddenly, I knew she was right. Failing to make the team was nobody’s mistake but my own. I decided to work hard for the team over the next year.
I practiced hard every day and had lessons every week. When summer came, I took part in lots of basketball camps. Through camp after camp, my abilities grew, and I knew I was ready for tryouts in autumn.

Have you ever taken a flight from Beijing Daxing International Airport (BDIA)? After opening on Sept 25, BDIA drew attention not just for its design , but also for its many high-tech facilities (设施) and services.
The new airport, seated in the southernmost part of Beijing, is made up of a main terminal (航站楼) ,a supporting service building and a parking lot.
Together, they cover an area of about 1.4 million square meters, which is equal to 63 Tian'anmen Squares, according to Beijing Review.
The new airport is expected to handle(处理) 45 million passenger trips a year by 2022 and 72 million by 2025, China Daily reported. With more runways planned, the new airport will eventually handle more than 100 million passengers each year. That's around the total population of the UK and Canada combined(总共的).
The airport has many new technologies that make it smarter and more efficient (有效率的). It is the world's first airport with a double-deck departure and arrival (双进双出) design for its terminal building.“It's more efficient for passengers than any other large airport terminal of the same size in the world," Guo Yanchi, the chief engineer in charge of construction (建造),told China Daily.
According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, 86 percent of check-ins can be done through self service check in kiosks (自助值机-体机) and 76 percent of luggage can be checked automatically (自动地) with the help of self service bag-drop machines. Other technologies, such as a facial recognition (人脸识别) system, allow passengers to have a quicker check-in and boarding process.
The airport will also use a robot-operated parking system. Drivers just need to park their cars in given areas. Robots will then carry them to an empty space. When collecting their cars, drivers simply need to scan a parking ticket to find out where to collect their cars.

Dear Linda,
I have been in England three months now. I hope you don't think I've forgotten you. There have been so many places to see and so many things to do that I've not had much time for writing letters.
I shall soon be starting my studies at King's College. So far I've been learning about England and British ways of living. I won't tell you about London. There are plenty of books you can read and plenty of pictures you can look at. I'm sure you'll be more interested to know what I think about the life here.
I find some of the customs (风俗) new and interesting. People here do not shake hands as much as we do in Europe. During the first few weeks I was often surprised because people did not put out their hands when I met them. Men raise their hats to women but not to each other.
Yours,
Alice

In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons for example, economic reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own home town of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate (影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.
1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the author?A.We should reproduce the same old buildings. |
B.Buildings should not dominate their surroundings. |
C.Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in. |
D.No one understands why people speak against new buildings. |

B.To warm that we could end up living in caves. |
C.To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings. |
D.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas. |
“What for? ” I asked.
“I’m going to sell some of my stones,” he answered.
Nick was fascinated with stones and had collected many stones from all over. “I’m busy to do
that for you. Go and ask your mum for help.” I said.
A short time later, Nick returned with a sign, reading,“Stones. One Dollar Each”. He took the sign, a small chair and four of his best stones and walked to the road in front of our garden. There he put the stones in a line and sat down on the chair.
After half an hour, nobody passed by. I walked to him and asked him to go back, but he didn’t.
Another half hour later, a small car came down the road. I watched as Nick stood up, holding his sign up. A woman rolled down a window and read the sign. I couldn’t hear their talk, but I saw the woman turn to the driver and the man reach for his pocket.

However, to control the new coronavirus outbreak (新型冠状病毒爆发), many schools have delayed(延迟 )the start of the semester, following instruction from the Ministry of Education(MOE). But students in China are still studying.
Instead of having class at school, many students in Beijing and Guangzhou began their first day of online classes on Feb 17. Students in Shanghai will start online class on March 2.
“In the morning, I have English class, followed by Chinese and Math,” Liu Bo, a Junior 3 student from Beijing, told Xinhua. “I have also learned about epidemic prevention.”
According to the MOE, students are mainly taking classes to review previous knowledge rather than taking new classes during the online study period. Online courses are required to include content about epidemic prevention, psychological health and educational activities.
“Online courses are only temporary measures(暂时的措施 )taken during the epidemic, so when the new semester begins, schools should not replace classroom teaching with online classes,” Li Yugang from the ministry told China Daily.
The ministry also called on school not to increase their students' schoolwork burden.
