On the first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. "Hi, girl! My name is Rose, and I'm 87 years old."
"Why are you in college at such a young age?" I asked jokingly.
"I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!" she replied.
Rose became a college symbol this year and she easily made friends with other students.
At the end of the semester, we invited Rose to speak at our football party. I'll never forget what she taught us.
"We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only two secrets of staying young, being happy and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humour every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die!" she said.
"There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do anything, you will turn 20 years older. If I am 87 years old, and stay in bed for a year, and never do anything, I will turn 88. Anybody can grow older. But every minute counts for young men," she added.
She ended her speech by singing The Song of Rose. She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives.
At the year's end,Rose finished the college education she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.

It takes an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to forget someone. Do not depend on one's appearance, it may not be true. Do not depend on wealth, even that disappears slowly. Depend on someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright.
There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug(拥抱) them.
Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.
May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials(尝试) to make you strong, enough sadness to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy.
Always put yourself in others' shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the other person, too.
The happiest people do not necessarily give the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness waits for those who cry, those who have been hurt, those who have searched, and those who have tired, for only they can enjoy the importance of people who have touched their lives.
The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past. You cannot go on well in life until you let your past failures and heartaches go off.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you are the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

One guy made the greatest, yet simplest paper airplane of all. He stood at the starting line, made a flat (平的) piece of paper into a ball and throw it out. All of us were beaten easily by him, we never expected things to happen like that.
Some students said that he cheated. The physics teacher said he doesn’t do anything wrong because a paper ball is indeed a shape.
Yes, just finished the task in a different way. We do everything according to our experience. However, our experience gets in the way of our development at some points. It prevents us from coming up with new ideas and destroys our creativity. So it is really necessary for us to learn to think outside of the box. Then we may discover easier methods which produce a better result.

B.Because he made the greatest paper airplane. |

上善若水。水善利万物而不争,处众人之所恶,故几于道。 —《道德经》 The top goodness is like water, benefiting all, contending with none, and is content with all that others disdain. Therefore, it is close to the Word. —The Word and the World (Translated by Zhao Yanchun) |
Laozi tells us that the top character is just like water. All life in the world cannot live without water, but water never asks for anything in return. It just keeps giving quietly. Also, water often stays where people don’t like, such as low-lying wetlands and deserted valleys (山谷). This kind of low profile (低调) makes water the closest to the law of the universe. It seems that we have always taken qualities like bravery and strength as great virtues, but we should not forget what water has taught us.
In dealing with people, we can act as water. Do our best to help others without trying to get fame. At the same time, stay humble (谦虚的). It’s unwise to always talk about the favors you gave to others. Even if no one cares about you in a difficult situation, you need to stay cool. After all, water will not choose where to be, it just runs to where it is needed.
As we all know, the Chinese nation has always valued Laozi’s ideas about water. In 2014, President Xi Jinping mentioned it at the welcome dinner of the 22nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Beijing. He said APEC members are brought together by the water of the Pacific Ocean and have a shared responsibility (责任) to make the Pacific an ocean of peace, friendship and cooperation (合作).

Melvin studies at William Allen Middle School in Philadelphia. Recently, he collected $ 1,500 by himself and $487 from his classmates to donate to Cooper University Hospital.
Melvin was born nine weeks premature (早产的) in Cooper University Hospital, weighing 2.6kg. His father told him how Cooper saved his life, so he feels thankful to the hospital.
Melvin's classmates joined him once they found out about his kind behavior. Their teacher, Michael Bemer, also held a class with them about helping others. "It wasn't really about the money," Bemer said. "It was about the fact that they were doing something good."
"It feels great, helping someone that I know." said Jordan, Melvin' s classmate. Melvin's neighbors also helped out.
Since Melvin was 6, he and his parents have given money to Cooper University Hospital every year. This year, Gray E. Stahl, the head of the hospital, went to Melvin's school to accept the money.

I’m a Chinese student. I’m very proud of China and I’d love to make a real contribution (贡献) to the development of my country. When I finish my training in Canada, I will go back to China and start a business, so I can give something back to the country.
I’m a Chinese student in America. My hometown used to be very poor. But it has changed now. Most people in my hometown have a good standard of living and some can now afford cars. I’m very pleased with these changes and very proud of them.
I spent a year in Beijing as a student in the late 1990s and I recently went back there on holiday. I couldn’t believe the changes which had taken place in such a short time and the qualities (品质) I admire in Chinese people are their wish to succeed, their family values and their sense of responsibility. I think these qualities will be very important if China is to continue developing.
I hope that China will become a successful and prosperous(繁荣的) country. There is still a long way to go. There are many challenges and difficulties ahead, but I am sure we can overcome them if we work together. |

Gertie is the kind of dog that has to grow on you. So I dicided that the dog would be trained. This didn't quite go as planned. At 15 weeks old, she was nearly made to leave the Petsmart Training School. She spent every night lying in our bed-snoring (打鼾)so loudly that I hardly got a good night's sleep.
Then, about six months after she arrived, I felt that something in my heart was taking place, and I was unable to stop it. My behaviour(行为方式)began to change. I began to smile at people when passing them in a street. I returned(招手)from neighbours. I started calling my kids, and to my surprise, they started calling me. I even tried to speak to my grandchildren over the phone once. I even was glad to listen to laughter from a 10-month-old granddaughter. The point is that I was changing.
My wife and I both agree that it is Gertie who has changed my behaviour. Gertie is now nearly two years old and almost fully grown.I have come to like the pet little by little, though she is my wife's dog.
