3 . I really love volunteering, for example, volunteering at free public schools and old people’s homes. It’s one of my favorite hobbies.
At my old school, I used to help my classmates. It was really fun to help with their studies. I wasn’t really a top student who always got the highest grades, but I could explain to them clearly.
Now, when I’m free, I often volunteer on my town’s main street. Every weekend, other volunteers and I make a lot of dishes to feed everyone who passes by the street. There are always about 400~550 people. The long day makes me tired, but it also brings me great joy. The looks of joy on those people’s faces would make my weary day into a good day.
From my volunteering, I learned that helping others doesn’t only make others happy but makes myself happy too. It creates great memories(回忆). And maybe one day, people once you helped would help you back.

Jordyn Perez was about to turn 8 years old when her mom suggested a new way to celebrate her birthday. “What would you think about donating your gifts to a children’s hospital?” her mom said. “Okay, that’s cool,” Jordyn said. “I already had everything I needed. And these kids that were going through things at the hospital—they needed it more than I did.”
Now Jordyn is in high school. She continues to bring joy to kids being treated for serious illnesses. In December, she made her eighth birthday-gift donation to Baptist Children’s Hospital. Jordyn’s gift drives kick off each year in November. She sends her friends invitations to her birthday party. The invitations list gift ideas for kids at the hospital. These include blocks and toy trains. Jordyn also shares the list with family and teachers.
“Seeing other people’s smile—that’s all that matters to me,” Jordyn says. Natalie Gutierrez works at Baptist Children’s Hospital. She has seen firsthand the effect of Jordyn’s gift-giving. “She puts smiles on the faces, of these little patients in our hospital and on our nurses,” Gutierrez says. “They are all amazed at her generosity (慷慨).”

In 2009, Bian Huawei, a doctor from Guangdong, visited Runan Primary School in a county (县) in Yunnan. The students were having lunch when he arrived. Bian noticed that they mostly ate potatoes. Later, he learned that green vegetables and meat were only available on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
During that visit, Bian bought a pig for about 1,000 yuan for the students to eat. The students were very happy. When he saw the look of joy on their faces, Bian made a decision. He wanted to help them eat better. After all, the better the students ate, the healthier they would be.
In 2010, Bian visited the school again and started his plan. He offered to buy fresh meat for the school for a year. And he also gave advice on how to improve the diets (饮食) of the students.
However, the story didn’t end there. Later Bian helped more primary schools in the county by providing free breakfasts, lunches and dinners for them. Of course, he didn’t do it alone. Many of his friends joined him. Thanks to their help, the health of students in the county has improved a lot.
