It all started with a simple question: “Can I paint your portrait (肖像)?”
In the summer of 2015, Brian Peterson, an artist, had just moved to Santa Ana, California. Outside his apartment, a homeless man was often shouting on the street corner, sometimes keeping him
One day, Peterson was relaxing in his living room, reading the book Love Does, when he was interrupted by the homeless man outside. Encouraged by the book’s heart-warming message, Peterson made an unexpected decision: He was going to go out and
In that first conversation, Peterson learned that the man’s name was Matt Faris. He’d moved to California from Kentucky to realize his dream in music, but he soon

Peterson’s connection with Faris
Faris used the money from his portraits to record an album (专辑), fulfilling his musical dreams. Another subject, Kimberly Sondoval, used the money to support her daughter.
In the eight years since Faces of Santa Ana was founded, Peterson, has formed a new organization called Faces of Mankind, a group of artists who are creating portraits of people experiencing
Peterson has painted 41 of these portraits himself. But there’s more to the finished products than the money they bring to someone who’s down and out.

2 . The 39-year-old Wu Qi is called “Uncle Dog” by many autistic (自闭的) children. As an animal behavior expert (行为专家), he set up China’s first animal-assisted therapy (AAT 动物辅助治疗) program using dogs to help children in need.
Wu Qi was very shy when he was a little boy. He spent most of his time in his room alone. His life changed after he found a little dog. “The dog was my best friend. It made me whom I am today.” he said.
After finishing college in 2003, he started to learn how to care for animals. To make his dog-training skills better, he visited people who were good at animal care in many places in the world. He learned the meanings of different sounds dogs make and became known.
Over the past eight years, Wu’s team has used therapy dogs to help more than 100,000 people. And they also have put forward animal-assisted therapy programs in cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Chengdu and Shenzhen. The program includes 18 classes and its purpose is to make children’s conversation ability and social skills better.
“While AAT has been used in Western countries for more than 100 years, few Chinese have heard about it. I want to show people that dogs are not just pets. They can help us increase the communication with children.” Wu said. “They are our bridge into autistic children’s hearts, bringing love and warmth to them.”

We all need help from time to time. Sometimes that help comes from people whose job is to provide certain support. These people are called volunteers.
Volunteering has many benefits (好处). Of course, making money is not one of them! If you volunteer your time to help others, they’ll smile at you and say “thank you”, which is enough to let you know your effort is worth it. Besides, volunteering to help others can give you valuable experience, help you learn new skills, and even lead to making new friends.
Volunteering can also be very educational. Some teachers and community groups have developed programs that combine (联合) volunteering with educational goals. This kind of community service with teaching and learning is known as service learning.
Let’s take an example. Picking up rubbish in a park is an example of community service. Separating materials which can be recycled in your local community is an example of hands-on learning. Combining the two is an example of service learning. In such a service, people can learn the importance of volunteering and how they can make a difference to their communities.
Service learning projects not only benefit the community but are also helpful to students in many ways. You can’t remember the lessons for a long time by simply reading them in a book, but the lessons will stick with you through service learning projects. The real world will offer you hands-on experience when you volunteer.
