1 . It was the last day for Teddy in the company. After he packed up all his personal belongings, he started back home. An old lady stood on the side of the road. He a    1     didn’t see her. Even in the dim(微弱) light of day, he could see she was in trouble. Teddy stopped his car and got out, walked towards the old lady.

Even with the smile on his face, she was w    2    . No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe.

He said, “I am here to help you, Madam. Why don’t you wait in the car where it is warm? By the way, my name is Teddy.”

Well, all she had was a flat tire(爆胎), but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Teddy lay down and moved under the car changing the tire. But he had to get d    3     and his hands hurt.

As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing though. She was grateful for his help.

Teddy just smiled as he finished the work. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would be all right with her. She already i    4     all the awful things that might happen if he had not stopped. Teddy never thought about being paid. This was not a j    5     to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way.

He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could do him or her a favour w    6     hesitation. Teddy added, “And think of me.”

He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold day and he had felt d    7     just now. Now he felt good as he went home, disappearing into the twilight(暮色).

3 . Sometimes the bad news around us may make the world look like an unhappy place to live.     1     If you make even one person smile today, you can help make this world a better place. Here are things you can do to put a smile on someone’s face.

Volunteer (做志愿者)

Volunteering is one of the nicest things you can do.     3     And you can also visit sick children in a hospital. There are so many chances, so you are sure to find one that is right for you. And it doesn’t have to take up all your time, it could be once a week or several times a year.

Make something special

Make something special or not, taking time to make something special for someone shows how much you appreciate (感激) him or her.     4     Some ideas could include a card, painting, drawing or cake!

Say “I love you”

It can be anyone, your parent, your grandparent or a friend. And you don’t even have to say “I love you”. Perhaps you can tell someone how much you care about him or her.     5    

4 . It was sunny last Friday. I arrived at the railway station at three in the afternoon. I would take the ______ to Shanghai to see my old friend Jack. But it was two hours ______ my train left. I thought it was the perfect time and place to look ______ an act of kindness to do.

Gift from a stranger

My local supermarket is always busy. I found the first parking space was convenient, but I suddenly noticed a woman in a blue car     1     around for a while. Since I was in a good mood, I let her have it. On the other side of the car park, I drove backwards into the next     2     place—a quite small place.

Pretty soon I made my way through the supermarket and was out to breathe the fresh air. Feeling good, I     3     the only dollars in my wallet into the hands of a homeless man and helped a blind woman cross the street.

Just as I got closer to my car to go back home, I saw the same woman again. She was showing a strange     4    —half puzzled (迷惑的), half smiling. I smiled back and wished her a pleasant day. As I drove by,     5    , she walked near and looked in at me.

“Hello,” she said quietly. “This might sound crazy but I was on my way to give away some of my     6     things at the charity organization. You are just so much     7     her. You helped those people, I noticed, and you seemed so happy.” She looked at me     8     and passed a box in through the window. “I think she would like you to have it.” Feeling quite shocked, I took it from her. She smiled and walked away.

After a while, I opened the box. Inside was a beautiful gold necklace with a large pearl. It was     9     gift I had ever received, and it was from a complete stranger. Every time I saw it, I     10     to do more volunteer work for the society. The necklace is always around my neck, making me notice how warm human kindness is!

Last year, around May Day, I read an ad in our local newspaper. There was a lady in a local nursing home, who was going to ______ her 90th birthday and her family wanted ______ to know about it. It said that if you wanted to write to her, here was her ______. So I did. I bought a birthday card and wrote her a short note, wishing her a happy birthday.

7 . One year ago, a couple with three children moved into the apartment next door to me. I never heard any _______ from the children, but the parents were always yelling at them.

One day when I ______, they were just coming back to their apartment and the little girl was holding the door open in the hall for _______. I remained in the car doing unnecessary things. A man was driving his car one day when he saw an old lady on the road. Her car broke down and she needed help. The man stopped his car and got out. Even though the man wore a smile on his face, the lady was worried, because the man didn't look safe. He looked poor and hungry. “I’m here to help you. Don’t worry. My name is Bryan Anderson,” he said.

After he fixed the car, the lady wanted to pay him. Bryan smiled and said, “If you really want to pay me back, the next time you see someone who needs help, give that person a hand. And think of me.”

On the same evening, the lady stopped by a small cafe. She noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant (怀孕的), but she never let it change her attitude (态度) when she served customers. The waitress had a sweet, friendly smile, although she had spent the whole day on her feet.

The lady wondered how someone who has so little could be so kind to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan. The lady finished her meal and paid with a $100 bill. The waitress went to get change (零钱). When she came back, she found the lady had gone and left a note on a piece of paper. “You don’t owe (欠) me anything. Somebody once helped me the way I’m helping you now. If you really want to pay me back, do not let the love end with you.” Under the paper were four more $100 bills.
