A few months ago, I learned that the city food bank needed some volunteers. I used to be the     1     in my group pf friends. So, I sent letters to ten friends. I’d like to     2     up a group that would volunteer to make and serve dinner for the disabled people. I wanted to invite my friends to be part of the group. Almost all of my friends     3    .

One day, several of my friends brought some food and helped prepare the meal. “I got such a strong feeling of satisfaction when I saw the     4     people get the food!” said one friend. Later, another friend made a list (清单) about serving,     5     we could do quickly and easily. Now each month there are new faces that join the group. One woman     6     invited another group pf her friends to serve.

You can help people in many ways. Schools need help with taking care of children while(当……的时候)their parents are working. Hospitals need volunteers to look after children while their parents are seeing a doctor. Animal lovers can help take care of those dogs and cats without homes. There is something for everyone.

“I often played computer games in my free time before. But now I help older people learn how to use computers, said Carlos Domingo, a volunteer at the age of 18.

“As a volunteer, I don’t want to get anything. Seeing the children’s happy faces, I’m happy, too,” said another volunteer.

8 . Adam Braun set up the organization Pencils of Promise in 2008. Its goal is to make sure all children have a chance for education. Twelve years later, the non-profit organization is building a new school somewhere every 90 hours. It has helped more than 22,000 children in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

It all started when Adam Braun was a college student. He was visiting India when a boy stopped him and asked for money on the street. Mr Braun asked the boy what he would want if he could have anything in the world.

“I thought the answer was going to be ‘a house’ or ‘a car’ or ‘a boat’. His answer was ‘a pencil’. So I gave him my pencil and he was just happy and excited. I realized he had never been to school before, and that was the ①reality for over 57 million children around the world.” Braun said.

Adam Braun started working in finance (金融) after he graduated from college. But he never forgot the boy and ②the problem he realized.

③“We live in a world in which every child can have a chance to get a good education, because we have everything necessary already. We are able to educate every child, So I promised to help change that world,” Braun said.

Mr Braun raised money for his project. He paid for building the first Pencils of Promise School in Laos, five years ago. Since then, his organization has helped pay for more than 200 schools in the countryside of Laos, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Ghana.

9 . At my heaviest I weighed 370 pounds. I had a very poor relationship with food: I used it to kill bad feelings, to make ______ feel better, and to celebrate. Worried about my health, I tried many different kinds of ways but they didn’t work. I came to believe that I could do ______ about my weight.

When I was 57, my weight problem began to affect me ______. I had spent more time in the hospital and I ______ catch up with my 7-year-old grandson when we took a walk. I was ______ by her story, so I created the Better Me, Better World ______. My goal was to lose 150 pounds in one year and raise ＄50,000 for a charity which was ______ thirty years ago to end hunger.

______ I began to carry on my project, I was filled with the fear that I would face the same difficulties which made me give up again. To my joy, after two weeks’ hard work, there were some encouraging ______ showing that I was going on the right way: I could sleep much better at night and I could walk farther______ the path in the park! ______ I sent letters to everyone I knew, telling them about my project and how perfectly it worked! Donations began to rush in from many people.

Of course, I also ______ the useful suggestions from my doctor and my fitness coach strictly, and I began to eat small and healthy meals. My money—raising focus also gave me new power to exercise regularly.

A year later, I ______ my goal: I lost 150 pounds and raised ＄50,000! I feel that I’ve been given a second life to do something that is meaningful and helpful!
