High school football players often work hard to build strong bodies and learn the value of teamwork. Sometimes, life offers a chance to show some skills off the sports field.

Liu Gang is a ________ of Sunshine High School. One day, he heard a loud noise from the nearby crossroad while waiting for his students outside the school. It was a terrible ________. A car hit the wall and the driver was trapped (困住) in the car. Liu Gang called 120 to ask for ________. Then he saw some members of the school football team rush to the car and work together to get the driver out.

“They really tried their best to ________ the driver. After pulling and pushing the door for a while, the boys ________ opening it and getting the driver out of the car,” Liu Gang said. Then he joined the students. They helped the driver get away from the car and stayed with her until help arrived.

Later that day, the headmaster of Sunshine High School praised the team members for what they had done _____ shared the story online. News spread and many people in the community knew the boys. They were ________ of them.

Hu Lei, a man in his early thirties, can’t stand or walk because of an illness called polio (小儿麻痹症). However, that doesn’t stop him from helping others. People call him “The Giant (巨人)” because he     1     a heart of gold.

7 . In her small home in the capital of Greece, Athens, 93-year-old Ioanna Matsouka has knit (编织) thousands of brightly colored scarves for children in need. She has no plans to stop.

Since she took up knitting in the 1990s, Matsouka has easily made over 3, 000 scarves. By the door to her home, bags are filled with her latest creations. In the beginning, the scarves were gifted to friends. As the number of scarves grew, they were given away to children’s homes across Greece.

“The fact that I give her scarves away gives her strength (力量) to keep,” said her daughter Angeliki. She talked about mails her mother received over the years: “Thank you, be well, keep going. You gave happiness to children; you gave hope to people...”

Angeliki says her mother is an example of strength and hope. Matsouka wakes up every morning, drinks a glass of milk and gets to work. She takes a break for lunch and a short sleep, then knits into the night. Matsouka knits one scarf a day now. She may have even found the secret to a long life in it. “Until I die, I will be knitting. It brings me joy to share them. It’s the happiness I get from giving,” she said.

Last summer I did some volunteer work in a small village in West Africa.     1     village was very poor and had no electricity or running water. I lived with a local family and worked on a project     2     (build) a school for the village children.

Every day I got up early and walked to the building ground. We worked all morning, carrying the earth and     3     (dig) foundations (地基). It was very hot and hard work but it was also a lot of fun! In the afternoons, when it was too hot to work, I played football with the villager. They were really good—a lot better than me!
