Ann loves reading books very much. She     1     to be very shy. She was afraid of     2     to others. So she began to read books. Last year, Ann’s dad got a serious     3    . Ann was very sad. And then books became the best comfort (安慰) for her.

Some months later, Ann’s dad got much     4    . Then Ann came up with a plan to help others.

Ann started a book drive in her hometown. She collected lots of books and took them to the children in hospitals. So far, Ann has     5     more than 10,000 books.

Ann and her father are very close. When her father knew about     6     plans for the book drive, he wasn’t surprised. “Ann is always interested in books,” he said. “And she always wants to do things for the neighborhood.” Ann ran the book drive well with her     7     help. And she was very happy to do something     8     for others.

Ann still runs the book drive now. She often says, “It’s a wonderful thing for me to make a     9     to our society. And helping others     10     always a cool thing. I think I want to do this type of work forever.”

“Rescue (救援) has no borders. Chinese rescue teams will keep going to     1     people,” said Chen Jiahuan, a 28-year-old member of China’s Blue Sky Rescue Team. On February 6th, 2023, a big earthquake happened in Turkey, and it caused tens of     2     of casualties (伤亡).

Chen arrived in Turkey together with many other     3     of the Blue Sky Rescue Team. “When we landed at the Istanbul airport, a local person said, ’China     4     a great country. Thanks for     5     support and kind actions. You must keep safe while working in the fallen buildings,’” Chen recalled.

According to Chen, nearly 300 people from the Blue Sky Rescue Team joined the rescue efforts. “From Thursday to Saturday, we     6     searched 25 buildings and 133 workplaces. Much to our joy, we saved 28 people. However, only two of them were     7     to survive (存活),” said Chen.

The members of the Blue Sky Rescue Team were     8     by what the local people did. “They lit a fire for our rescue team by the roadside. And they shared their bread with us, though they didn’t have enough food to eat.” said Chen.

“As the old saying goes, ‘Many hands make light     9    .’ One person’s power is weak, but the power of a group is strong,” Chen added.

In late February, the Blue Sky Rescue Team returned to China. During the stay in Turkey, they saved 8 survivors and     10     137 victims (遇难者) in total. How great they were!

Mary is a book lover. She could read by     1     at the age of four. Last year, she decided to     2     for a volunteer after-school reading program. She still works there once a week to help kids learn to     3    . “The kids are sitting in the library, but you can see in their eyes that they’re going on a different     4     with each new book. Volunteering here is a dream       5     for me. I can do what I love to do and help others at the same time.”

I work in a cleaning company. Usually people call us, and we     1     house cleaning service.

One day, I got a call from a man named David. “I want to help an old man. He just had surgery (手术) and is still     2    . Can I pay for it without letting him know?” he asked. David was a very kind man. He called us because he was     3     about his neighbor, Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith just came back from the hospital. His house was in a     4     but he couldn’t do any housework. Even     5     the floor was difficult for him. He didn’t tell his children because he didn’t want them to     6     their time to take care of him. David wanted to help Mr. Smith without bringing him any     7    . And then we asked David what would happen if Mr. Smith refused to let us come into his house. “I have to at least try, and     8     I really want to help him,” he said.

Luckily, Mr. Smith let us in and our workers did a good job.     9     we promised David not to tell his name, we didn’t tell too much to Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith was touched by the gift from someone he didn’t know.

Sometimes we don’t expect to     10     on others, because we are afraid of letting them get into trouble. However, there is always someone who cares for you and tries his best to help you.

Wang Ping is a cleaner. He has worked in a park for 5 years. He is also a good father. Nothing can make him     1     than playing with his little daughter in his free time.

Last Tuesday afternoon, while he was cleaning the park, suddenly, he heard a woman crying for     2    . He ran up quickly to see what happened. The     3     15-month-old baby girl choked (窒息) on a small piece of pear and her face turned purple. The baby was too young to save     4    , and the mother was so nervous that she didn’t know how to save her daughter properly.     5    , Wang Ping knew what to do. He took the baby in his arms without thinking     6    . With the mother’s help, Wang Ping held the baby upside down and     7     her a few pats (轻拍) on the back. After a short while, he succeeded (成功) in getting the piece of pear out of the baby’s     8     and she began to cry. Her mom was so thankful because her daughter was saved.

Wang Ping tried his     9     and saved the baby’s life. In his mind, helping others is just helping himself. He hoped     10     people could volunteer to help the people in need if possible.

Since 1921, the Communist Party of China has been leading Chinese people to live better lives.

My parents are very proud because     1     of them joined the Party when they were in university.     2     members of the Party, they know they must serve (服务) the people. They always take part in community efforts (有组织的活动) actively. During     3     unusual winter holiday in 2020, they joined a team of volunteers to help check people’s information     4     take people’s temperature. They also spread knowledge about COVID-19. Their behavior shows me the     5     of the Party members. I want to learn more     6     them and to be a member of the Party.

When I was younger, my parents told me many touching (感人的)     7     about the CPC. The spirits of Hong Yan, Jingangshan and Yan’an moved me so much. From that time on, I became     8     in the Party. Many years have passed. I read lots of books and watched movies that show the spirit of the CPC. What’s more, I have joined in many activities that are about the Party in order to learn more about it. Now I am a League member (团员). I believe     9     I will be a real Party member before long. If I become a member of the Party, I will do as     10     as I can to help others. I’m looking forward to that day!

Over the past 13 years, 31-year-old Li Hongjia has helped nearly 500 deaf-mute (聋哑的) children return to school.

Li was born     1     central China. When she was in college, she began working with deaf-mute children as a     2     in a rehabilitation (康复) center. At first, Li wanted to be a designer after graduation as her parents expected, but the volunteer service experience     3     her mind. She wanted to be a teacher at the center to help these children more. And she made it. However, it wasn’t     4     for Li to work in the center at first. Li couldn’t afford a big room     5     she only got 800 yuan a month. She had to live in a small room of     6    than 10 square meters. Even the bed was     7    with two chairs by herself. The biggest problem came from Li’s     8    . They couldn’t accept their daughter’s job. Her father even refused to see her. But when he saw the children for the first time, he was touched     9     and got a better understanding of his daughter’s work.

Li tries     10     best to teach the children to speak. “If a job is only for money, I would not choose it,” Li said. “This job gives me a great sense of achievement.”
