1 . Oct.16 is World Food Day. The UN started the day in 1979 to tell people not to waste (浪费) food and fight hunger (饥饿).

According to the UN, there are more than 1,000 million hungry people in the world.

Many children go to sleep hungry, and 15 million of them die of (死于) hunger each year.

There are some reasons for this. First, there are droughts (干旱) and floods (洪水). Also, there are more and more people in the world. Another big reason is food waste. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away (扔) every day. Sometimes we cook too much, or we don’t use it before it goes bad. On average (平均来看), a person throws away 510 kg of food every year. Too much food is wasted.

So think twice next time you want to throw away food. By cutting down on food waste, we could help put food on the empty plates of some hungry children. Only order (订餐) as much food as you can eat at a restaurant. If you can’t eat all you order, take it home. Think of what food you have at home. Don’t buy too much. Don’t cook too much.

2 . Different colors have different meanings.

Black is the color of power. It has the meaning of submission (服从). It is popular in fashion because it makes people look thinner.

White is the color for brides (新娘).White is considered as a summer color. White is popular in fashion because it is light and goes with everything.

Red is a hot and strong color. It can make the heart beat faster. It is also the color of love. Red clothes can make people look heavier. And red things can get noticed. Americans often use it to express heat. They may say they are red hot about something unfair. When they are red hot, they are very angry about something.

The color of the sky and the ocean, blue, is one of the most popular colors. It is often used in bedrooms. Blue can also be cold and make people feel sad.

Green means nature. It’s natural for trees and grass. It is the most comfortable color on the eyes and can improve vision (视觉). It is a calming color. Hospitals often use green because it relaxes patients there.

Yellow is the most difficult color for the eyes to take in. Yellow is sunshine. It is a warm color like red. On the one hand, it is the color of happiness and joy. On the other hand, it means fear and dishonest behavior.

6 . As traditional Chinese art, paper cutting has a long history. The first and earliest paper cutting was found in Chins more than 1,500 years ago. But this traditional art is at risk of disappearing now. Luckily, Voyo Woo, a Chinese immigrant(移民) in America, is trying to bring this art back to life.

One Saturday in 2014, Ms. Woo held a paper cutting show at a shopping center near Washington. She got much fun and peace doing it. She hoped more people would enjoy it.

Ms. Woo began to study the art of paper cutting as a 14-year-old girl in her hometown in China. She said all the students at school had to learn paper cutting. But she had a deep love for it. So her teacher spent more time teaching her after class. Later, she won the second prize in a national painting and art competition. Ms. Woo went to America after she finished college in 2008. And then she was invited to show the art in many important activities.

From the art of paper cutting, people can know about Chinese cultural values, history and stories of people’s life. Chinese art is not only for Chinese, but also for people all over the world.

Beijing Opera is an important part of Chinese culture. In the past, it was popular with old people while young people didn’t like it. But now, more and more young people are becoming interested in it. At the same time,more people around the world are learning about Beijing Opera.

9 . In Canada, when you see a group of students wearing funny hats or summer T-shirts in winter, don’t get a surprise. Maybe they are enjoying their School Spirit Week.

School Spirit Week is a time for students to show their personalities and class cultures. It is a school festival. Students from primary schools to high schools can hold it in any week of a year. And students’ family and friends can go to the special festival, too.

School Spirit Week usually has a central theme. According to the theme, students wear special clothes and decorate (装饰) their classrooms. Every year, there is a different theme. And the themes for young kids are usually very simple.

10 . Do you know how to do goose step (正步走)? Can you make your quilt look like a piece of tofu? You can learn all these skills in military raining (军训). Schools in other countries also have military training programs for students. What do they usually do? Let’s take a look.

In South Korea, men between the ages of 20 and 30 must serve in the army (服役). They usually serve for two years. Children also have military training in primary school. They have different kinds of activities, such as hiking and walking through mountains at night. Sometimes, the activities are very hard. In Russia, boys between the ages of 15 and 16 have to take part in a five-day military training program. They learn skills like shooting (射击), parachute jumping (跳伞) and cooking outside.
