1 . Learning English can be great fun. Today I learned some expressions (表达) about fruit and vegetables. I’d like to tell you something about them.
First, cucumbers (黄瓜) are long and green. People often eat them. If we say a person is “as cool as a cucumber”, that means he never worries about anything or gets angry. He is calm at any time.
If two people look exactly the same, we might say they are “two peas in a pod (豆荚)”.
Potatoes are popular food in many countries. “Small potatoes” means something or somebody unimportant. For example, Jim doesn’t want to be “small potatoes”, so he works hard. Someone might call you “a couch potato” if you sit and watch television all day and get little or no exercise.
Bananas are a kind of popular fruit. We can say you “go bananas” if you are very angry.

Do you dream of being Iron Man? Do you watch him in some famous films? Just put on a new kind of clothes and you will become very strong like him!
In fact, scientists developed the new clothes for people to wear in real life. They are called exoskeletons. People can wear them on different parts of their bodies. They will help people a lot.
How can exoskeletons help? First, they can help people carry most heavy things. Second, they will help the disabled people stand up and walk. And then, they will be warm when people are cold, and cool when people are hot. If someone gets lost, they can help too! Scientist Glenda says the exoskeletons will help him or her find a way and get out fast. It’s also a very important advantage.
“The cost of a full-body exoskeletons is about $45,000” says Accenture’s Mr Spragg. But the price will come down. Maybe people won’t spend lots of money on them in the future. “I think people can buy them in every shop.” one Scientist -California’s Suit X says.
▲ How do people clean the clothes at home? How do people take care of the clothes? What’s the final price of the clothes? Will there be any other problems? It may take scientists a long time to find them out.

Do you often carry maps when you travel to other countries? Maps can show you the right ways. But if you don’t bring maps with you, what should you do? I’m afraid that you need to ask the way. Here are some tips(建议) for you, because there are different ways to give ways in the world.
In Japan, most streets don’t have their street names. The Japanese use landmarks(路标) to give ways. So when you ask, “Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to the nearest post office?” They often say, “Go along the road, turn left on the second street and go past a supermarket. The post office is opposite the hospital.”
In the countryside of the American midwest. The land is very flat(平坦的). So if you have the same question, people will say to you, “Go east 3 kilometers, turn north and then walk another kilometer.” But in Los Angeles and California, people measure distance(测量距离) by time, not meters. So when you ask, “How far is the nearest post office?”, they will tell you, “It’s about 10 minutes’ walk from here”.
People in Greece often use body language to help you. They will use their hands to show the right or left ways, or they will simply say, “follow me.” Because they can’t speak English and the tourists couldn’t understand the language there.

4 . Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows:Once we have learned something, additional learning trials(尝试)increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.
The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one’s future development.
1. What is the main idea of paragraph 1?A.People remember well what they learned in childhood. |
B.Children have a better memory than grown-ups. |

D.a basic step towards advanced studies |
A.It leads to failure in college exams. |
B.It’s helpful only in a limited way. |
C.It’s possible to result in poor memory. |
D.It increases students’ learning interest. |
In English, feeling “blue” makes people think of feeling sad. But in 2021, the word “blue” could be connected to something more hopeful.
The Pantone Color Research Center in the US leads color trends every year. For 2021, it has chosen “classic blue”, a color that reminds people of the sky before night. The reason is that it brings “calm, confidence and connection,” according to Pantone.
In 2020, people all over the world face big challenges, weather change, COVID-19, homelessness.... all of these problems make us feel nervous and worried. But as Pantone President Laurie Pressman said, “The color of classic blue always brings something relaxing.”
Imagine that you are lying down on the ground and looking at the evening sky. Looking at the dark blue sky will make you feel calm and relaxed, as well as make you think on a deeper level.
Pantone said that classic blue connects people everywhere as we all look up at our shared sky. This is a color we can be connected to around the world, no matter where we live. We look outside the door and we see this color, Pressman said.
Classic blue also plays into the sustainability movement, as people think of times when things were simpler and more comfortable.
“Like blue jeans, it’s always there and you’re comfortable with it,” said Pressman, who thinks classic blue is timeless and never out of style. If the color is always in style, people won’t throw “classic blue” things away. We can buy fewer products and save more resources.
So if you want to add some new things, choose something blue to keep up with the latest trend.

6 . When do children start to talk? If you ask a group of parents when this happened, most will say “around twelve months of age”. They will probably even remember what the children said. Many parents keep a diary of their child’s “first words”.
We can never predict what a first word is going to be. Often it’s the name for “mummy” or “daddy”, but it could just as easily be the word for an animal or a favorite toy. Everything depends on what has most caught the child’s attention. But one thing is certain: after the first word, others come quickly. By 18 months, most children have learned about 50 words. By two, the total has risen to around 200.
Early words are actually one-word sentences. One of the first features(特征)of language a child learns well is to control the rise and fall of the voice to make the difference between stating and questioning. In English, daddy with a high rising tone(声调)means “is that daddy?” Daddy with a high falling tone means “There’s daddy”. Of course, only very basic meanings can be communicated using tones alone. So it soon becomes necessary to learn some grammar.
In English, grammar means learning to put words in different orders. Children have to see that mummy push is different from push mummy. They start practising such changes at around 18 months. By two, they have learned the basic patterns of word order, and we hear them saying such things as man kick ball and where daddy go.
What are the parents doing all his time? They’re acting as teachers and they always have an active role to play in their child’s language learning.

7 . Lima, the capital of Peru, is located in the central coastal part of the country, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. With a population of more than 9 million, Lima is one of the largest cities and the only capital in South America that faces the ocean.
Lima has a long history. The lost Inca civilization, is thought to be a mystery. There are many museums, where you can learn: how the ancient American Indians founded the Inca Empire and built Machu Picchu, a famous ancient city in the Andes Mountains; what happened in 1532 and why over 90% of Peruvians speak Spanish. Visiting the historic center, a World Heritage Site, you may find you are communicating with both the past and the present.
Lima is also a place where you can find the lifestyles and fashions, created by its people and culture. You will see Peruvian clothes, dances, and taste their delicious foods and drinks. You can see buildings in different styles, enjoy the fantastic sunset over the ancient ruins, climb the mountains, fly over the ocean, or sit in the restaurants and bars to experience Peruvians’ relaxing life.
You may have heard “It never rains in Lima.” In fact, the special geographic feature makes it not as dry as it is said to be and it is warm all year round. Though it seldom rains in summer, it sometimes drizzles on early winter mornings. The drizzle and the wet air “water” the ground, which makes the crops and the plants grow. Moreover, modern technology helps to bring water from the snow and ice on the top of the Andes (over 6,000m high) for the city to use. People there never waste water.
Lima is such an amazing city that it is worth a visit.
