Long time ago, people from other cultures used their hands to eat food, while the ancient Chinese invented chopsticks to keep their hands clean. Early chopsticks were used mainly for cooking until 400 A.D. when people began eating with chopsticks.
We don’t know exactly when chopsticks were invented. There’s a research showing that they didn’t come into wide use until about 300 B.C. Chinese thinker Confucius was an important person in the history of chopsticks, because he thought peace would not appear if people used knives during a meal.
The “no-knives-on-the-table” rule led to a big change in Chinese cooking. Food had to be cut into small pieces. This was the birth of Chinese cooking and it has made Chinese food popular around the world.
However, many Westerners find it difficult to use chopsticks. Eric, a foreign teacher, had the experience of learning to use chopsticks. “I need to hold them properly to be able to put the food carefully into my mouth.” Eric’s Chinese friends taught him patiently, but it still took him months to learn this skill. “But it’s worth learning. I have learned a lot from this experience,” Eric said.
Cultures can often be understood through food. For Chinese, food doesn’t just provide energy. It also brings happiness. And chopsticks also mean a lot. As a good example of Chinese culture, they show the Chinese wisdom (智慧).

Among them, remembering new words, understanding the grammar and spoken English seem to be the most difficulties for students. How to deal with the difficulties in English learning? Here are Xu Feng’s suggestions:
First, copy new words on pieces of paper, stick them on the walls in the bedroom or living room, and read the words aloud when seeing them. Change the words often.
Next, focus on understanding and practicing the basic grammar rules before moving on to the more difficult ones.
Finally, practice speaking English as much as possible, whether it’s with foreigners, classmates, friends or teachers. Also, watching English TV shows or movies, listening to English songs, and reading English books are good ways to improve spoken English.

6 . Gestures are used to replace words in many countries. They usually have different meanings in different cultures. Let’s look at the three gestures.
What does the “O” gesture mean?
If you are an English speaker or diving (潜水) under the sea, it means “OK” or “good”. In fact, it’s believed that this gesture is popularized (普及) by divers. The Japanese read it as “money”. The French read it as “zero” or “no value”.
What does the “thumb-up” gesture mean?
This gesture also means differently in different countries. English speakers use it to stand for “OK”, which is the same meaning as the “O” gesture. The two can be used almost interchangeably.
To most people, it stands for the number “1”, since they count from 1 to 5, beginning with the thumb for 1 and ending with the little finger for the number 5.
Although Americans and British people usually ask for a ride with their thumbs raised, the gesture will not make a Greek driver stop to give them a ride.
What does it mean to stretch out your index finger (食指)?
Extending the index finger means different things in different countries. The Chinese stretch their index finger upward to indicate the number. They can refer to integers (整数) such as “one”, “one hundred”, “one thousand”, etc. In Japan, the index finger up means only one or once. This gesture represents the first in order. In the United States, use this gesture when asking the other person to wait. In Australia, in bars and restaurants, the forefinger is extended upward, saying, “A glass of beer, please.”
In the Middle East, it is impolite to point at something with your index finger.

Very few people enjoy exams. I don’t, either. When I have an exam, I am always too worried about it. So I’m not surprised when I find that my students worry about them. As a student, it’s impossible for you not to worry about exams at all, but at least you should try not to worry too much. Good students never study hard only a few days before an exam. They study hard all the time. Remember that it is impossible to learn everything at the last minute.
Then what should you do? If you start to study for each exam early, you will be able to say “How easy the exam is!” Then you will be more confident about yourself.
▲ Take a short rest during your study. If you are too tired, you can’t remember things well. Then you should have a short rest for about ten minutes after you study for an hour. Then you can remember things much faster.
▲ You’d better not stay up late before an exam. You may feel tired or want to sleep the next day if you stay up too late before an exam.
▲ Try to do something else to relax yourself. You can listen to music or have a walk with your good friends. They are both good ways to help you feel less worried or nervous before an exam.
