1 . Our new foreign students are going to arrive very soon, and here are some ways to communicate with them politely.

How close do you stand when you talk to a friend? You can stand close to people in the Middle East but don’t stand too close to North Americans! Give them more personal space.

Do you know how to touch people correctly? Chinese girls often walk arm in arm with their friends. South Americans sometimes hold your arm when they talk to you, so you can’t move away! But in Britain many people don’t like other people to touch them at all.

Do you look at people when you talk? In some places, it isn’t polite to look at people when you talk, but in other countries it isn’t polite to look somewhere else. In Britain and the US, people usually look at each other when they talk.

And how do you say goodbye? That’s easy, wave (挥手) to say goodbye. But be careful! In Greece, it’s not at all polite! In fact, it’s very rude!

2 . Bullying (欺凌) can happen to anyone. A great many children around the world are bullied every year, but there are things that can be done to help.

What is bullying?

Bullying is when someone makes you feel bad or hurts you again and again. Bullying can happen at school, out of school and online. Bullying includes：

·calling people mean (恶意的) names

·laughing at people

·telling lies about people

·taking someone’s things without permission (准许)

·not letting someone play in a group

·hitting people

What is cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying includes：

·sending bad messages online

·sharing photos online without permission

·not letting someone be part of an online group

·spreading lies online

What can you do?

If someone is not kind to you, tell an adult that you know and like. For example, talk to a parent or a teacher.

If you get bad messages, don’t reply. You should save them and give them to your teacher, your family, or the police. Ask an adult for help. Don’t share something before you make sure it is true. That will help stop the cyberbullying.

Talk to your parents or teacher or an adult if you see bullying or if you are worried about a friend.

Say sorry if you are not kind to someone. You can write a message or talk to the person. And always remember: think about how to be kind in the future.

4 . Everyone needs friends. Friends bring us happiness and hope in our lives. But the ability to make friends changes from person to person. To some people, making friends is easy, and to others it’s very difficult.   

Making friends is a skill, and the first thing is to know how to get on with others. If you have trouble in making friends, maybe I can tell you how to do it.

▲Realize your own good points. You have skills and talents (才能) that others will like.

▲Be sure that you are a good person and have something nice to share with others.

▲Be humorous. Learn to laugh at yourself and your weakness. Remember to smile at others.

▲Respect (尊敬) others. Everyone has his own idea. Learn how to listen to others’ ideas without trying to make them accept yours.

▲Be kind. If you are kind to others, they will usually be kind to you. There are hundreds of little things you can do to show your kindness. Open the door for someone. Wave to a friend and so on.

▲Don’t complain (抱怨). Learn to accept what you can’t change, and try to change what you can. No one is willing to hear your complaints all the time.

▲Never give up. Try to find someone who will understand you.

5 . Coffee has become the most popular American drink. Today people in the United States drink more coffee than people in any of the other countries. People drink coffee at breakfast, at lunch, at dinner and between meals. They drink hot coffee or coffee with ice in it. They drink it at work and at home. They eat coffee ice-cream and coffee candy. Coffee is black and very strong. Different people like to drink it in different ways. Some people like coffee with cream or sugar in it. Other people like coffee with both cream and sugar in it. In all ways it is served. Coffee has become an international drink.

8 . I’m Peter. I live in a small town near Beijing in China. You can’t see it on the map of China because it is too small. The air here is fresh, and it’s healthy to take a walk after dinner.

There are not many tall buildings in our town. The best building is in our school. There are about four hundred students and twenty­-five teachers in our school. In the front of the school, there is a playground. I often play basketball with my classmates on the playground. There is a little garden behind our school. And we can grow beautiful flowers and plant trees in the garden. Next to the garden, there is an orange orchard. You can see a lot of oranges in it in autumn. You can see birds singing everywhere. There is a small river not far from our school. In summer, we can go swimming with our teachers in it. We study Chinese, English, maths and other subjects at school. The teachers are very nice. We love them and our school very much.

10 . The food British eat in Britain is very different from Chinese food. For example, the British eat a lot of potatoes. They like eating them every day. They eat bread for breakfast and usually for one other meal. They eat their bread with butter, cheese, or jam, the things we don’t eat much in China. Cheese and butter are made from milk. They drink a lot of milk, too. And they put it in their tea. They put sugar in their tea as well. They like Chinese tea, but mostly they drink strong black tea from India and Sri Lanka (斯里兰卡) .They don’t eat much rice. For their main meal they like meat or fish with potatoes and one or two other vegetables. They serve (供应) all these together. Later they always have something sweet. They call this “dessert” . They don’t have jiaozi in Britain.
