1 . Many people (人们) like to travel (旅行) by plane, but I don’t like it because an airport (飞机场) is usually far from the city. You have to get there early and wait for (等待) hours for the plane to take off (起飞) and it is often late. You can’t open the windows. You can’t choose (选择) the food. Planes are fast, but they still take hours to go out of the airport and into the city.
I like traveling by train. I think trains are safe. Railway stations are usually in cities. When you are late (晚的) for a train, you can catch another one. You can walk around in the train and open the windows. You can see many interesting things on your way. I know it takes a little more time.
I also like cars. You can start your journey (旅行) when you want to, and you don’t need to get to a railway station or a bus stop. Also you can carry many things with you in a car. But sometimes there are too many cars on the road.

2 . The city of music
Vienna is a beautiful old city on the River Danube in the center of Europe. It’s the capital city of Austria and the center of European classical music. In the eighteenth century a lot of musicians came to study and work in Vienna.
In the Strauss family, there were two composers called Johann Strauss: the father and the son. The father, Johann Strauss the elder, wrote and played music for traditional dances, called the waltz. His dance music made him famous all over Europe. The son, Johann Strauss the younger, was also very successful and popular. He wrote over 150 waltzes. In 1867 he wrote The Blue Danube waltz.
Mozart was another very important composer. He was born in Austria in 1756. Before he was six, he played not only the piano but also the violin. His family took him around Europe and he gave concerts in many cities. He wrote hundreds of pieces of music. But he became very poor and died in 1791 when he was only thirty-five. Like Johann Strauss, father and son he was a great European musician, and many people still think his music is perfect.

3 . Do you know whose job is to stop food from going from one country to another? B-E-A-G-L-E-S (米格鲁猎犬)! Do you know why? Because these dogs love food. They are perfect for the job.
Beagles work at airports in a lot of countries, for example Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Their job is to sniff out food. These dogs have special noses. They can even smell food in bags or boxes. When a dog finds a bag with food inside, it sits in front of the bag. If the dog finds the food, the workers will give them something good to eat.
These dogs don’t live in a house because the food in houses distracts (干扰) them. Their noses are very important. Living away from people helps to protect their noses.
These working dogs should not be afraid (害怕的) of large groups of people or other dogs. They should not be afraid of loud noises. They should feel well when travelling in a car.
Next time when you’re at an airport and see police dogs, don’t play with them. They are busy. They’re working to keep us safe.

5 . It’s a challenge for people to live in very cold weather. We do not have animal fur to help us keep warm! We can make clothes and build houses to keep warm!
In winter, you must be careful. If you get stuck (受困) outside for a long time in very cold weather, you may feel difficult to move your body. So what can you do to stay warm?
First, find a big pile of snow and then dig a cave (洞穴). Make it big to keep air inside.
Second, climb into your cave. Before you climb inside, clean the snow on your clothes. The heat(热量) from your body will stay inside the cave. This is good! But if there’s much snow on your clothes, the snow will melt (融化). This is bad. Wet clothes will take the heat away from your body!
Third, try to make the floor of the cave higher. This will keep the sleeping area warm when the cold air goes into the cave.
Next, fill up the door hole (洞) with snow. This way, the heat will not get out.
Finally, if you can, share your cave with a friend. Two people make more heat than one person can.

Do you play with your phone before bedtime? You may want to read a book instead. According to a US study, looking at screens at night can cause us to sleep badly.
In the evening, our bodies make melatonin (褪黑素). Melatonin helps us feel sleepy and relaxed. It’s an important part of our sleep cycle (周期). Our electronic screens stop that cycle from working normally (正常地).
Why? Phones, computers and TVs make blue light. Blue light stops our bodies from making melatonin. Even just a little bit of blue light can have an effect (影响). Eight minutes of blue light can keep your brain “awake” for an hour, according to the study. Even if you fall asleep, you may have lots of dreams. Your brain won’t have a good rest.
It’s even worse if you play an exciting game before bed. Games make our hearts beat faster, so we have a harder time falling asleep. Then, when we fall asleep, we don’t get enough “deep sleep”.
1. Does melatonin help us feel sleepy and relaxed?
2. What do phones, computers and TVs make to stop our bodies from making melatonin?
