1 . I'm Fang Ming. On holidays my parents often take me to the zoo in our city because I like animals. I have a lot of toy animals in my room. In the zoo I can see tigers, elephants, monkeys, pandas, bears, giraffes and many other animals. Some animals are very friendly, but some are not. Tigers, bears and lions are very dangerous. That is why they have to stay in cages. But I don't think it's good for animals to stay in cages. They should be free. The animals in cages can't be happy.
Tigers usually live in forests and mountains. They can run very fast. They catch and eat small animals like rabbits and deer, but now they live in small rooms. They have nothing to do every day. So they walk in the cages, and they want to get out. When they are tired, they sleep. I feel sorry for them.

2 . Bi Sheng was born in Song Dynasty. He lived in a small village which lies in Huanggang today. He invented the printing around 600 AD (公元)。He was the world’s first inventor of the printing. It is about 400 years earlier than the printing in Germany.
The printing is also called the movable type printing (活字印刷).But how did it work in the past?
First of all, the clay was made into movable types. Then words were engraved (雕刻) carefully onto the types. After that the words were chosen and put in right order in a box according to the text. Next, the workers brushed ink onto the movable types. Finally the types could be used for printing. They could be used again and again for different books.
The movable type printing plays an important role in Chinese culture. With the help of it, Chinese culture spread around the world more quickly. At the same time, the movable type printing was widely used in the world at that time. As a result, more and more culture communication among countries took place.

3 . Curiosity (好奇心) is part of human nature. Children are known for wanting answers to many questions. Books and TV shows often depend on curiosity. People keep reading or watching because they want to find out what happens. But curiosity also provides many advantages.
Learning is the easiest if you have a real desire (渴望) for knowledge. Curiosity can create that desire when you want an answer to the question. Many of history's greatest discoveries were made by curious people. People wondered how things worked and how work could be done more effectively. Thanks to their curiosity, people now know far more about the world. Even if you don't plan to be an inventor or researcher, curiosity can still help you in the classroom. If you develop the joy of learning, classes will become more fun. Even if you're no longer a student, curiosity will make you knowledgeable and thus a good worker.
What do you do if you're not already curious? Luckily, curiosity is a skill that can be improved (提高). If you act like you're curious, you'll quickly start to actually feel curious. Often, the more you learn about a topic, the more interesting it becomes. As you learn about a topic, find information from as many ways as possible. Read books, listen to lectures and ask questions. Don't always get information in the same way. Instead, learn to appreciate the facts that different people know and ask a lot of questions. Remember, everyone knows something that you don't. Find out what that is, and ask about it. This lets you learn something and makes the other person happy by sharing their knowledge.

4 . We can use milk to make all kinds of things. Here’s how to make plastic:
You will need | Teaspoon Vinegar(醋) Measuring cup Whole vitamin D milk (nonfat or low-fat) Sauce pan Adult helper Stove |
Do this | 1. Pour 2 cups (500 ml) of milk into the sauce pan. 2. Ask the adult to heat the pan slowly on the stove. 3. Just before the milk boils, bubbles will start to appear on its surface. 4. When that happens, slowly put in two teaspoons of vinegar. 5. Keep stirring(搅拌) until the milk becomes rubbery(橡胶状) and hard to move. 6. Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool. 7. When the milk is completely cool, remove the solid from the pan, squeeze it into a ball and wash it under cool running water. |
What happened? | A chemical reaction takes place between a chemical(化学物质) in the warm milk and acid(酸) in the vinegar, and the result is a rubbery solid that does not dissolve in water. The milk has to be heated for this experiment to work. The white glue that comes in a squeeze bottle is one of the many useful things. That can be made from the chemicals in milk. |

5 . Everyone wants to be perfect. Finding a good way to achieve selfimprovement (自我提高) is more and more popular. For this, the beginning of a new term is a great time to think about ways that you can improve in the coming school year. Here are some suggestions for New term’s resolutions(决心).
Firstly, make sure your goal is realistic (现实的). Winning the lottery (彩票), for example, may not come true. Then, describe your resolutions in detail, instead of “I don’t want to be lazy”, or “I want to exercise every day”. At last, change large goals into small ones. For example, if you want to lose weight, you can start by exercise.
Our new term’s resolutions and goals can be about anything, from saving more money so that you can buy a really cool toy, to making more friends, or to spending more time with your family. Start by writing down some goals on a piece of paper. After you finish, keep the paper somewhere you can see, like on your fridge or a wall in your room. Don’t forget to check the things on the paper if you complete.

6 . Everyone gets angry. Many things may make you angry. Maybe your teacher gave you too much homework. Or maybe a friend borrowed your favorite video game and then broke it. You may get angry when something doesn’t go your way. Maybe you get mad at yourself when your team loses an important game. Or maybe you become a road rager(路怒族) when a driver accidentally cuts in front of you. That makes you angry!
You need to know what to do with your anger. Here are some things you can do when you feel angry:
Talk to a friend you can trust.
Count to 10.
Get or give a hug.
Take some exercise.
Draw a picture of your anger.
Play a video game.
Run around the outside of the house five times as fast as you can.
Sing along with the CD player.

Germs(细菌) are everywhere. You can’t see them, but they are on your desk, on your computer, and even in the air!
Like people, germs move around the world. They fly with us on planes. When food, clothes, and other things travel around the world, germs travel, too. Some germs are safe, but some are dangerous. Germs cause illnesses like colds and the flu.
Warmer Weather Brings Germs
The world’s weather is changing. Cooler countries are getting warmer, so insects from hot countries can move there. Some of these insects, like mosquitoes, carry dangerous germs. These germs cause headaches, fever, and can even kill people.
Under Your Skin
Your skin protects you from germs. It stops some germs, but not all. They can enter your body when you eat, or when you have a cut. Germs are on your hands, too. They enter your body when you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Fighting Germs
Your immune system(免疫系统) protects you, too. When germs get inside your body, your immune system finds and kills them. Special cells(细胞) move around your body and fight germs. They help you stay healthy. Other cells make antibodies. Antibodies help your body find and stop germs.
What can you do to fight germs? You should wash your hands with soap and water. Soap kills many germs, and water washes them away.

8 . Different from popular thoughts, colds are not caused by bad weather. Colds are caused by viruses (病毒) in the body, and you are better out on the snowy day than you are in a warm room with your friends, who just may be passing the virus around. If you feel a chill (寒冷) when you are coming down with a cold, you are already sick. A chill is an early sign of the cold.
The virus can spread through air when a cold–sufferer (感冒患者) coughs or sneezes. Surprisingly, this is not the most usual way of spreading. Many studies have now shown that most colds are “caught” by hands. A cold–sufferer rubs her nose, so spreading the virus to her hand. Then a friend comes to visit her. They shake their hands. The friend then gets something to eat by hand, and several days later she catches a cold. Although some parents pick up their children’s tissues (纸巾) and carefully throw them away, they fail to wash their hands. They’ll catch the colds, too.
Cold viruses can also be spread by objects, for example, telephones, plates. The cold–sufferer as well as other members of the house, by washing their hands often, will stop the viruses from spreading in a way .

Work hours are different from one country to another. In France, people spend about 1,646 hours a year at work. In Japan, however, people work about 2,159 hours a year. That means a Japanese worker works 513 more hours a year than a French worker.
Why do people work so many hours? Some people work extra hours because they want to make more money. However, many companies don't pay overtime. Their workers don't get more pay for more work. Some people think it's their duty to work more hours. Some are afraid of losing their jobs if they don't work more hours.
Many people say that their vacations are too short. In France, people get five weeks of paid vacation a year. In Germany, they get four to six weeks, and in the United States, two weeks. One study shows fewer than half of workers used all their vacation days. In Great Britain, there is a saying, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull (迟钝的) boy." If that is true, there must be a lot of dull people in the world.

10 . It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people.
Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and mathematics need not be taught in detail(详细地), either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.
Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of all take an interest in the world.
I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.
