1 . Have you ever considered your school as a mini-neighborhood? In Boston, about 60 children certainly have. Their school, in fact, is called Neighborhood School.
Neighborhood School opened a few years ago. At first, there are only seven children and three part-time teachers. The school believed it was important for children to discover and value the differences between people. It welcomed children with different abilities and needs, and its members came from different backgrounds. They worked together to create a loving learning environment.
During the following years, the school grew to include more students and teachers. It developed a way of grouping students. Today, all the kids at the school are divided into three grades. The youngest learners’ missions are to get to know each other and become members of the school “neighborhood”. Grade-2 students learn to work as a team through field trips. By Grade 3, students are becoming leaders and helpers. In “Reading Friends” activities, they help Grade-1 kids to read and to learn new words. At the Year-End Musical Play, they take the lead while helping the teachers to make sure that every child at the school gets a chance to perform at the event.
The class in Neighborhood School is also special in some ways. The teachers at Neighborhood School teach more than just new knowledge and skills to their students. They never simply offer the kids a solution; instead, they help them come up with one. The students have a discussion together and encourage each other to work hard. They make sure both they and their classmates can reach their learning goals. Have you been inspired by their class? Maybe you can make a little difference from now on.

2 . Street dance is an energetic and exciting type of dance. It started with people dancing in the street rather than in studio(练功房).
Break dancing and the Melbourne Shuffle are two examples of street dance. Many of the hip-pop dances are popular street dance. Even rave dancing is a type of street dance. Street dance changes and improves all the time as people try different moves. It is a form of dancing that boys really enjoy.
A school in Britain has seen how street dance has helped its pupils. They introduced it as a subject at school. Dance teachers went to the school to teach the students how to perform. The dances were rehearsed at lunch breaks and after school. Many of the students were from homes with many problems. The students also used to behave badly. When the street dance classes started, it seemed to solve many of these problems. The students felt that they could express their feelings in dancing. If they were angry, they could do some of the dance moves and throw away those feelings. If they were angry at something, dancing helped them to be more peaceful. Another good thing was that the students felt better about themselves.
The students focused on other subjects more. They got better grades. Taking part in the street dance also taught the students to work better with others. They needed discipline(纪律)to come to practice and to learn the dance steps. They entered a dance competition and won! This was very good for them. The younger students began following them. They are active role models.

8 . Spending two or three hours playing outdoors each day can reduce the chance of becoming short-sighted, a research shows. It challenges the belief (信念) that short-sightedness is caused by computer use, watching TV or reading in weak light.
The Australian government researchers believe that the sunlight is good for people’s eyes. They compared the vision (视力) and habits of 100 seven-year-old children in Singapore and Australia. In all, 30% of the Singaporean children were short-sighted — this rate (比率) was ten times higher than Australian children. Both groups spend a similar amount of time reading, watching television and playing computer games. However the Singaporean children spent an average of only half an hour a day outdoors — 90 minutes less than the Australian children.
Professor Ian Morgan, from the Australian Research Council’s vision Centre, said, “Humans are naturally long-sighted, but when people begin to go to school and spend little or no time outdoors, the number of short-sighted people gets larger.” We’re also seeing more and more short-sighted children in cities all around the world and the main reason may be that city children spend less time outdoors.
Daylight can be hundreds of times brighter than indoor light. But why does playing outside prevent us from becoming short-sighted? Scientists believe that natural light has a special chemical which stops the eyeball from growing out of shape and prevents people from becoming short-sighted.
So be outdoors. It doesn’t matter if that time is spent having a picnic or having sports.
