1 . What is a “cat coffee shop”? Well, it is a cafe that has cats. People can touch the cats, play with the cats and drink coffee there.
It seems that there are more pet cats around us today. And that’s true. There are 58,100,000 pet cats in China according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The number of cat owners in China is the second largest in the world after the United States. One important reason is that more young people are taking cats as pets. Maybe that’s because cats are clean pets and you don’t have to walk them. More cats bring more jobs. Many people now work at pet shops and hospitals.
But cats can be problems, too. Some people throw their pet cats away. The cats become homeless. They can pass on diseases. They also hunt and kill other animals like birds and frogs.
So in Japan and Australia, the governments take homeless cats to animal hospitals. Doctors operate on them. So the cats can’t have babies. In this way, the number of cats will not go up.

2 . Are you the type of person who always says “yes”? Are you brave enough to say NO? It’s okay to say NO and people are still going to like you. They may even respect (尊敬) you more because they know you are honest.
I’m not saying to say “no” to someone who really needs your help. I’m talking about turning down that meeting that you really do not want to attend or that birthday party that you don’t want to be a guest at.
Think for a moment how you feel when you say YES to something that you really don’t want to do. If you are like I once was, you can’t sleep at night and you think about it too much. It weighs on your mind. Whatever you are saying to yourself, if you really wanted to go, you wouldn’t have all of these thoughts.
So, why not just say NO from the beginning? Maybe you feel like if you don’t show up at the meeting (by the way, it is not one you must attend), your boss isn’t going to like you or your coworkers won’t respect you. Maybe you feel as if your mom, dad or sisters won’t love you as much as before if you don’t do everything for them that they ask every occasion.
If these people are your true friends, family members, or a good boss, they will like or love you the same no matter what. People treat you the way you teach them to, and if you’re someone who always says “yes”, then that’s what they are expecting.
You need to do what is right for you. Of course we do have real obligations (义务) in life to fulfill, but we do not have to do everything others want us to do.

3 . ①That future is almost here. “I think it’s going to happen. Definitely in ten years…and hopefully much, much faster,” said Sebastian Thrun in 2021. At that time, his young company Kitty Hawk Corporation was working on developing a flying car known as eVTOL, or Electronic Vertical (垂直的) Take-Off and Landing vehicle (车辆).
②Flying to work or school sounds unbelievable. Not only is it fun to fly, but “there would never be traffic again, because the sky is very, very large,” says Thrun. He also thinks eVTOLs could be greener than common cars. “We go much faster, we go in a straight line, we fly on less energy,” he says.
③So far, though, flying cars haven’t taken off as a product. Will their day come? There are still many problems to solve. Their high price means most people won’t be able to afford one. So, some companies are developing them as air taxis that people could pay to ride. The main problem with flying cars is safety. Accidents in the air are dangerous to both the passengers and anyone on the ground beneath. To make eVTOLs safer, many developers are aiming to make them self-flying—no human pilot required.
④Another problem is space. Most aircraft need long runways to take off and land. Lifting straight up and down like a helicopter (直升机) solves this problem. But eVTOLs still need special spaces, called vertiports, for take-off and landing. Finding places to put these could be difficult, especially in crowded cities. But maybe some could go on top of buildings.
⑤What do you think? Would you enjoy riding to school or to visit a friend in a self-flying taxi? Are flying cars a good idea, or should we find other ways to get around in the near future?
1. What is Sebastian Thrun’s opinion about the future of flying cars?A.He believes it will happen in ten years and faster. | B.He thinks it will never happen. |

Jerry is a world-famous mountain climber. He has climbed many high mountains in the world. Starting in 2015, he and his friends spent two years on an adventure in South America, covering 7,800 miles. He was even named “Adventure of the Year” by a famous geography magazine in 2018.
Although Jerry had achieved great success, he didn’t feel fulfilled. He asked himself, “Is it enough to climb the highest mountains? Am I doing something helpful? How can I turn my adventures into something that can help the world?”
Jerry learned that scientists need plants, rocks and water samples (样本) from the places far away to do research. But scientists can’t get there themselves as such places are hard to reach—only the bravest adventurers can make it. Jerry thought he could do something to help. He then came up with an idea. He set up a team of top adventurers to collect samples for scientists. By studying the samples, scientists could know more about the earth and find ways to protect it.
Recently Jerry and his adventure friends have discovered a special plant life of Mountain Qomolangma. The samples they brought back have helped scientists to know how plants live in extreme (极端的) conditions. For Jerry, this kind of adventure is most satisfying. “Such adventures had made us see life in a different way. Now, being the best climber isn’t important for me. What matters is doing something helpful while climbing the mountains. There is still much more we can do.” Jerry said to a newspaper.

6 . China covers large areas and has the most people. Different living habits are always an interesting topic (话题) in the country. These days, another difference between southern Chinese and northern Chinese became a hot one: the way to shop at markets.
People from southern China say that they always buy some vegetables for just one or two meals. It is normal for them to buy one potato or a little beef at a time.
However, one may be laughed at if he does this in the north. Instead, buying vegetables and meat enough for a week is usual. Also, you can buy a small amount (数量) of fruit, such as an apple or pear each time in the south. Shop owners even help you peel and cut them. But shop owners in the north hardly offer such service. And they sell many fruits in baskets and boxes.
The difference could be due to the different weather. Food can be kept for a long time in the north as it is usually cold and dry there. Many northern Chinese have the habit of storing food, especially for the long winter. But the hot and wet weather in the south makes southern Chinese buy just enough food for one meal or one day, or the food may go bad.

10 . We are compared with others all the time. Our parents may compare us with our sisters and brothers. Our teachers compare us with other students. They want to use these ways to cheer us up and hope we can become the good examples. But most of the time, we are too stressed to move forward.
We are compared with others about everything like grades and heights. As a result, when we do something, we hope to get praise (表扬) from others, especially from our parents and teachers. When we can’t get praise, we won’t be happy. This also makes us feel very uncomfortable and stressed. However, in fact, it will be helpful for us if we treat (看待) it in a right way. From comparison (比较), we can understand ourselves better and learn about the differences between us and others. This pushes us forward all the time.
