1 . Everyone needs to know how to prevent a fire. It is also important to know what to do when it breaks out.
Every year, over 11,000 people are killed or injured in house fires. Smokers who are careless cause about 200 deaths and over 6,000 fires. More than half of those who die in fires are suffocated (窒息死亡) by smoke.
Be aware of how quickly a spark or flame can become deadly. It can take away the air you need to breathe. It can make so much smoke that it can kill someone in seconds. If fire breaks out, do not attempt to fight the fire unless it is small. Try putting out a small fire with water. If the fire has spread, shut the door on it. Alert everyone else in the building and tell them to get out. You should leave and dial 911 for the fire department.
Before going into a room, check the door. If the handle or the door is hot, don’t open it! Instead, put clothing or a wet towel at the bottom of it to keep smoke out. If there’s a rush of smoke or heat, close it again and shout to alert others inside.
Now open the window and shout Fire! See whether you can drop safely to the ground. Use this as your escape route if you can. If you are not on ground level, break your fall by pushing a mattress out first. Lower yourself at arm’s length before dropping. Once outside, stay outside and make sure the fire department is called.

2 . Millions of years ago, there were many strange animals on the earth. There were huge monsters (怪物) that could fly. The monsters could fly like a bird, but they were not birds because they had no feathers. There were elephants with long and woolly hair. There were also very small horses which were not bigger than dogs. Weren’t they strange animals?
We cannot see these strange animals any more because they disappeared from the earth. These strange animals have become extinct. How do we know that they once lived on this earth?
Some of these animals got frozen in very cold lands. The ice preserved them perfectly so that they could be dug out.
Not all the animals got frozen. In other places, the animals fell into mud when they died and the mud covered them. Their bodies rotted away (腐烂), but the bones remained. As time went by, the mud turned to stone little by little. So the bones of the animals were preserved in stone. Scientists dug out the stone and studied the bones to get to know what the animals looked like.
Thanks to the scientific research, we have got a chance to learn about the strange animals which once lived on the earth.

3 . ①Recently, experts are studying how language could influence children’s lives recently. The study carries out a survey of 2, 001 parents with children under the age of 18, along with another survey of more than 500 business leaders.
②According to the study, we discover that children who speak different languages become more aware (意识到) of different cultures, other people and other points of view. This might help them better understand the world around them and then for sure increase their chances of finding better jobs when they grow up. The future job markets are in need of space tour guides, robot coaches, e-commerce (电商) workers, etc. No matter what a child chooses to be, multilinguals (多种语言的人) and cross-culture talents will probably stand a good chance to take the lead.
③But which languages top the list? Results show that children should be learning French, German, and/or Chinese if they want to be successful in the next ten years. Being able to speak one of these languages opens the door to new markets for businesses and allows them to create new relationships with future business partners.
④In the survey, however, we have also found that not all parents are aware of the importance of their children learning a second language, which is quite shocking. While around 85% of the parents believe that it is important for their children to learn a second language, more than 45% of parents admit (承认) that their child or children cannot speak a second language and even 15% of the parents consider learning a second language a waste of time.
⑤If you want your child to stand out from the crowd, follow the habits of parents of successful people—give children chores, set high but realistic (现实的) expectations, get yourself educated, spend time together—and, of course, make sure they learn a second language, especially one of the three languages!
1. According to the study, how might learning different languages help children?A.It might make children develop an interest in culture. |
B.It might help children to look for good work when they grow up. |
C.It might allow children to meet the standards of strict teachers. |
D.It might increase children’s chances of creating new relationships at school. |
A.By listing some predictions. | B.By giving examples. |
C.By making comparisons. | D.By explaining reasons. |

4 . Astronauts have already visited the moon and lived on space stations. They’ve never been to another planet so far, but by the year 2100, they might live on the planet—Mars (火星). The astronauts will spend about six months traveling to the planet, then about two years on the planet and about six months traveling back to the earth. They’ll be away from the earth for about three years, so they’ll need a lot of food! It’s very expensive to take food into space. It costs about 120, 000 dollars to carry something that weighs one kilogram. So an apple on Mars could cost 20, 000 dollars. Of course, they will need to take quite a lot of food with them to feed the astronaut s for three years. This amount of fresh food can not stay fresh, and is very expensive to take, so they need to find food that is not very heavy.
At the moment, astronauts on space stations eat dried food. It’s very light, so it doesn’t cost a lot of money to carry it into pace. But astronauts stay healthier and happier if they eat fresh food. In the future, astronauts on Mars may grow vegetables like lettuce (生菜) and carrots.
Astronauts an Mars will probably have special machines. They’ll use these machines to change beans into foods that taste like meat or cheese because it won’t be possible to keep animals in space.
Life on Mars will be better than that on Earth in many ways. People will have more space. Living in a large building with only 10 bedrooms is highly possible. Many people believe that robot will do most of our work, so we have more time for our hobbies.

Do you know the sun’s warmth is a kind of useful energy? Want to try using it yourself ? Let’s do a cool project-making a solar (太阳能的) tower!
You can try this project at home. You just need some tape, a pin (别针), paper, three cans and two big thick books. Now, we’re going to build the solar tower. First, make a pinwheel (纸风车) with a piece of square paper. Second, cut off the tops and bottoms of the cans, place the cans on top of each other and tape them together. Next, use a pin to connect the pinwheel with the tower. Finally, put the can tower on top of the books, which are 5 cm apart from each other. So there’s a gap (间隔) at the bottom, allowing the air to enter the tower.
Now, all we have to do is set the whole thing near a window, where there’s sunlight. When the sun shines on the tower, it gets hot and warms the air in it. The warmer air moves upward (向上的) through the tower and makes the pinwheel turn around as it passes by. Then cooler air comes in through the gap from the bottom of the tower, gets heated up, and rises, so the cycle goes on. This is how it works. How amazing!
So next time you feel the warm sun on your face, remember that it’s more than just a nice feeling-sunlight is a powerful and useful source of energy.
1. How does the writer introduce the topic?A.By listing numbers. | B.By asking questions. |
C.By stating opinions. | D.By giving examples. |
A.To stop the tower from falling off. | B.To stop the books from heating up. |

9 . ①“A friend in need is a friend indeed.” Friends are important to us. Friends help us get through hard times. Friends also influence us a lot. Let’s enjoy two poems about friendship.
② I, Li Bai, sit aboard a ship about to go. When suddenly onshore your farewell songs o’erflow. However deep the Lake of Peach Blossoms (桃花) may be. It is not so deep, Wang Lun! As your love for me. | ③ A Time to Talk (By Robert Frost) When a friend calls to me from the road, And slows his horse to a meaning walk, I don’t standstill and look around. On all the hills I haven’t hoed (锄地), And shout from where I am, what is it? No, not as there is a time to talk. I push my hoe in the ground, Blade (锄头)—end up and five feet tall, And I go up to the stonewall, For a friendly visit. |
④ Both poems are famous in their cultures, but they tell different stories. Li Bai described the scene (场景) of his friend seeing him off. US poet Robert Frost wrote about a friend’s visit when he was working. Li made a comparison. His poem shows the friendship between him and his friend is deeper than the deep water. Frost’s poem, on the other hand, tells the readers that we should stop what we are doing to talk with our friends. It tells us that nothing should get in the way of spending time with friends. The language is simple but sincere (真挚的).
