1 . What would you paint if someone asked you to tell them about China?
12-year-old Mao Mofei is a student from Chengdu Sichuan Middle School. Her painting, Future is coming, is on show at the International Youth Art Invitation Exhibition in Florence, Italy.

How is it going? I’ve stayed in Marseille for about a year. It’s in the south of France and is the second largest city of the country. It’s a really beautiful city, especially in autumn. You know my home town Scotland is famous for its awful weather—always cold and rainy! But I’m lucky with the weather here this year. I only started wearing a coat a few days ago.
I love autumn here because I love the slow change from green to orange to red to brown during the months of the season. Whether a park, a street or a garden, autumn makes any place look like a postcard!
In September, October and November, the weather is colder than usual, but I find it refreshing (清凉的). I love running around outside to exercise. These months are the last chance (机会) to spend a lot of time outside before winter comes, so I try to make the most of it.
Autumn also has the best holidays of the whole year! I’m also lucky because my birthday is in September, and last weekend I had a picnic in the park with all my friends to celebrate my birthday! So I’m already counting down (倒计时) the months to next September!
Yours,
Lucy

On a sunny spring day, I enjoy looking through books in a bookstore. It’s the perfect place to relax. As I hang out through the hallways, I can feel my blood pressure drops by10 points and that my IQ rises by 10 points.
In recent years, competition between e-books and online booksellers has hotted up. Many people predict bookstores will die. Thankfully, that hasn’t happened. Indonesians are getting ready to meet in Nyepi—their New Year. It falls in March or April and is a sign of a fresh start for the people. On the eve of Nyepi, families and friends get together in the market. They carry a huge monster (怪兽). The monster is made of wood. People put it on fire, hoping to drive away bad spirits.
After Nyepi, a Turun Tanah party begins to celebrate a child’s first step. At the Turun Tanah, parents invite friends and family to the party to introduce the baby. They put different objects, such as a bracelet (手镯), a pen, a mirror, or a toy computer around their baby. If the baby picks up a pen, he or she may be a writer. If a child picks up a gold bracelet, he or she may be rich.
While Turun Tanah celebrates the future of a family, Galungan celebrates its past. The dead ancestors (祖先) return “home” during this ten-day celebration. And living relatives do their best to make them happy. Tall bamboo poles (竹竿) line along the streets. People visit their family and village temples (寺院). Actors and dancers give performances. 7 . Perhaps you ride a bike to school or drive a car to work. We use all kinds of vehicles on the road, so to be safe becomes more and more important. Cycling can be great fun. But do you know how to ride a bike safely? We should learn to ride our bikes well before we go out on the road. If you can’t ride a bike in a straight line, you should practice riding in a safe place. To be safe on a bicycle, you need to use both hands and both feet. If you have a basket, put your books and packages in it. It’s not safe to carry anyone with your bike. Don’t ride in the middle of the road or run through red traffic lights.
Cars can bring us lots of fun, but they are also dangerous. We must be careful when we drive them.
It’s always a good idea to wear your seat belt when you’re in a car. Why? Think about this example. You put an egg on a skateboard (滑板) and give it a push. If the skateboard hits the stone, it will stop, but the egg won’t. It will fly far away, hit the stone and break. But if you tie the egg to the skateboard, it will stay safe. Without belts, both the drivers and the passengers may be badly hurt in a sudden accident. Don’t drive too fast. Don’t talk with other passengers when you drive your car.
