1 . Language students often think they have memory problems. They worry because they can’t remember words. In fact, the problem usually isn’t with their memory. The problem is with how they study.
To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memories: short-term and long-term. When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it’s organized (有条理的).When you put away a book-or memory-you can’t just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again.
How can you do this with vocabulary? The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences that include it. Even better, you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is height, you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words, stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.

2 . “How are you?” is a nice question. It is a friendly way that people in the USA greet each other. But “How are you?” is also a very unusual question. It is a question that often doesn’t need an answer. The person who asks “How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “Fine.”, even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn’t really a question and “Fine.” isn’t really an answer. They are simply other ways saying “Hello.” or “Hi.”.
Sometimes, people don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?” the other person might think “No, I disagree. I think you are wrong…” But it is not very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say “I’m not sure.” It’s a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone.
People don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they want to finish talking to other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says “I have to go now.” Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse “Someone is at the door.” “Something is burning on the stove.” The excuses might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk any more, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.

3 . Some students think it difficult to learn English well. That's because they don't find the right way. I think reading is very important to students. The more you read, the better you'll understand.
Reading is helpful for listening, speaking and writing. If you often read English aloud, you'll improve your listening. On the other hand, listening a lot can help you to read better. Read English everywhere when you are free. You can get a lot of knowledge when you read. Sometimes you need to express your ideas; you can either speak or write. That means you are using what you learned from reading. The same as Chinese, the more you read, the better you can write. If you want to remember something, you should read it again and again.

4 . China's national anthem, March of the Volunteers, is a song that we learn at the beginning of primary school and sing at every flag-raising ceremony. And now, there's even a law to protect it. Last September, the government passed the National Anthem Law, which became effective (生效) from Oct. 1, 2017. It states how we should sing or play the song, requiring all of us to behave towards it politely.
Primary and middle schools must teach the anthem to their students and make them understand the song's spirit and history. Moreover, the law requires us to be serious when we are singing the song. We can’t joke about it or change the song's words or music. If someone breaks the law, he or she can be detained for up to 15 days, or face further punishment in more serious situations. The national anthem is different from other songs—it is the symbol of our country.
Many foreign countries also have laws for their national anthems. For example, American school children should put their right hand over their heart while singing their country's anthem at school. In Russia, the national anthem must be played on television and radio before the start and end of broadcasting. And in the Philippines, people are required to sing the national anthem with feelings when it's played in public.

5 . “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart.”—Nelson Mandela, the late president of South Africa.
Mandela understood that our mother language can make us closer. For people who speak an ancient language as their mother language, it helps them keep their traditions. Their language is their main connection with their ancestors(祖先). And it is also how they imagine the future.
But there are fewer and fewer existing languages over the last century, more than 400 languages have died out. Some languages are now spoken only by a few dozen people, like Yagan in Chile. Africa and South America are also places where many languages are dying. Why are humans speaking fewer languages than we once did. The answer has to do with globalization(全球化). Nowadays, it’s more useful to speak certain languages-English is one example-rather than others. This has killed some languages, usually the ones spoken by fewer or less influential people.
But some people aren’t prepared to accept a planet with fewer and fewer languages. They want to find and protect more endangered languages. And the United Nations has set Feb. 21 as International Mother Language Day. The organization wants people to pay more attention to dying languages and make them more animate.
This work is of great importance. Just as the US writer Rita Mae Brown wrote, “Language is a kind of symbol of a culture. It tells where its people come from and where they are going.”

6 . Very often, new-born babies are not beautiful. They are wrinkled(多皱的) or hairless, or they have an angry look on their faces. They seem to say, "Get away! I hate everybody." But to a parent, that hairless, wrinkled, angry-faced baby is the most beautiful and perfect child in the world. When that proud father or mother asks you, "Well, what do you think…isn't it beautiful?" What are you going to say? Is this the time for the truth? Of course not!
You look at that proud parent and say, "Yes, it is! It's really a beauty. It's one in a million. It's going to be a movie star! I can tell! It's as beautiful as a picture."
In English, this is a white lie. White lies don't hurt people. They are not cruel(残忍的) or angry words. People use them to make a difficult thing a little easier. When people don't want to meet someone, or eat something new that they really don't like at a friend's house, they tell a white lie. They are trying to be kind. They don't want to hurt someone. According to a survey by McDonald’s Singapore which talked with 302 parents, found 72 percent of children, and 69 percent of parents use their smart phones during the meal time. McDonald’s has showed mobile phone lockers(储物柜)to people, in order to get people to put their phones away, and start talking to each other again.
One of its shops in Singapore started with families. The store asked both kids and parents to put their phones away. However, it seems that the locker can have 100 phones in it.
This is not the first time that McDonald’s has given such an initiative(倡议). Another one, which is also under McDonald’s “Phone Off, Fun On” initiative, isn’t doing too well either. It tried to pull off a similar activity in India in 2015. It asked the young people to put down their phones. And people also had to write how long they weren’t online and what they did during the time on their Weblog on the Internet.

◆ can get along well with people around them;
◆ are more possible to do better in math and science because music helps build reasoning skills(推理能力) which are important to both;
◆ are more possible to go to college.
One study showed that among second-grade students, after they got keyboard training classes, they scored much higher on math tests. And after the students joined the public school music programs, the study showed that they could score higher on their exams than before.
