Emperor penguins are the largest penguins on the earth. The largest emperor penguin is over a meter tall and up to 40 kilograms heavy.

For many months each year, emperors live near the sea in large groups called colonies. However, in May, the weather gets colder and ice covers large part of the sea. Each colony moves many kilometers from the water. There, each mother penguin lays just one egg. Then all the hungry mothers must walk back to the sea to find food. The father penguins put their eggs on top of their feet, under a special piece of skin called the brood pouch.

Working together

For two months, the father penguins keep the eggs safe and warm. They do this through some of the coldest weather on Earth. By July, it is winter in Antarctica. Most animals leave for warmer places, but the father penguins stay. In this time, without food, a father penguin can lose almost half of his body weight, so he is thinner.

New Life

By August, the babies begin to hatch. The mother penguin returns just in time to see her baby come out of its egg. The chick is then moved to her brood pouch. This can be difficult. If the chick falls, it may freeze quickly because of the really cold weather, so the penguin parents must be very careful. Once the chick goes into its mother’s brood pouch, the father penguin can go back to the sea to find food.

Growing up

Over the next few months, penguin parents take turns going to the sea for food. They each make the trip over a few times, bringing back food for the chick. The chick grows quickly and is always hungry.

Into the Water

By December, winter is ending. The chick is five months old and can live by itself. Soon it goes into the water for the first time. It will swim and eat. By next April, it goes back here. After a few more years, it, too, will start its own family.

3 . Hi, I am Mary. I am a middle school student. My school is a very beautiful place. There is a big library with books of all subjects in my school. There are a lot of storybooks and newspapers in the library too. It is in the classroom building.

In the library, there are rows of tables and chairs. It looks very clean. And it’s easy for students to find books. We can sit there to read books or borrow books from it. We can take two or five books at a time and we must give back the books in seven days.

Our library teacher is a nice woman. She is friendly to all students. We all like her. She always helps us find books. When we ask her some questions about book, she is happy to answer.

I like reading books. Every day I go to the library to read books. I love to visit my school library. It’s a good place to read and study.

It’s a pity that deaf people or those who have hearing problems can’t enjoy music. Now a vibrating suit brings them hope—it can allow them to “feel” music through their skin, rather than hear it.

Designed by the US technology company Not Impossible Labs, the suit consists of a body harness, ankle and wrist straps.

Music is sent to the suit wirelessly. Then the suit is able to translate it into a range of vibrating pulses, which can be felt at a total of 24 contact points all over the body. The users can adjust the intensity of the vibrations.

Chase Burton, 33, a deaf filmmaker from Texas, has been testing out the suit for four years. He understands that a deaf person’s experience with music is very different. “When I was a kid, I’d sit on the floor above our garage so I could feel the vibrations from my brother’s band rocking out below my body.”

Now when he wears the vibrating suit, he says the sound hits different parts of his body. “Maybe it will strike me down in my ankles first. And then I’ll start to feel the vibrations in my back. And then I’ll feel some pulsations in my wrist,” Burton said.

The designers have been working on extending the tactile musical experience to a larger deaf community. In 2016, a dozen prototype suits were tested at Lady Gaga’s concert in the US. The suit was also tested at a special concert in Las Vegas in 2018. It was given to 150 audience members at the concert, where half the audience members were deaf and half could hear.

At the same time, the company has been improving the technology, saying it’s ready to go to market soon. The suit may be used in live sports broadcasts.

“We truly think that anything that has an audio element can also have a vibrational experience associated with it as well,” the company’s talent and business development director, Jordan Richardson said.

6 . The supply of water is causing increasing an uncomfortable feeling to scientists in many countries. In these countries, it is fast becoming an important social and economic problem. Although the natural supply of water (It comes from fall of rain, snow, etc.) is at present far larger than the world's total requirements, this supply is not distributed and full use cannot be made of it. The conveyance* of water over long distances is too expensive to be practicable, and many of the world's great rivers contains a lot of fresh water which can never be of much real use. For the world's immediate needs, men must now look to new sources of fresh water, and they must develop technologies for recovering fresh water from salt water. Every country is trying to find ways to turn salt water into fresh. In the past, expense had been a difficulty to the widespread use of desalination* plants, but recent technologies has finally made this method reasonable. Some areas, such as Kuwait, are almost totally dependent on external supplies and would be in a dangerous position. Whatever the methods used, scientists are confident that the supply of fresh water will be increased but they point out that the cost will increase correspondingly.

Shang is not alone. In the first half of 2014, the number of Chinese students studying in the US has increased to 275,000. But according to China Youth Daily, about 5 percent of Chinese students in US colleges are unable to graduate.

They are being sent back home because their grades are not good enough (62.1%), they cheat, such as copying other students’ work (21.4%), and they have poor class attendance* (10.9%).

These appear to be not from a lack of intelligence*, but a lack of discipline*, said the report. The situation has been getting worse since more Chinese students are studying in foreign countries at younger ages. According to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the number of Chinese students studying in US private high schools has increased from 65 in 2005 to 23,795 in 2013.

Far away from their parents, some students are said to spend a lot of time chatting with friends, going to parties, and playing online games.

There are also great language problems. Although they have to pass language tests to study abroad, daily communication is still hard for many Chinese overseas students, according to research at Indiana University in 2013.

Because of this, many of them just stick with other Chinese students. They don’t often take part in sporting events or study groups. And some could only catch bits of information during classes, said the research.

Living and dealing with kids can be a hard job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even harder.

If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship*, you need to let other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate*, you can not be close to anyone. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything.

Communication begins with the care of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and ignore* everyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing. To keep a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note.

When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, but ask them politely to listen to you. Shouting or walking away only makes the situation worse.

Here is an example: One night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let the incident*go. Communication is the key factor* here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.

Communication isn’t a one-way deal: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, telling the other person how you feel--listening is the key factor to communication.
