1 . Hi! I’m Tina Smith and I’m thirteen years old. I live in Quebec with my parents, two little brothers, Peter and Mike, and a clever dog Blacky.

The city we live in is really beautiful. In winter it often snows and you can see the snow in the streets and on the houses. When the temperature（气温）is lower than thirty-five degrees（度数）below zero we don’t go to school but stay at home. It is very, very cold! Sometimes there are heavy snowstorms and you can’t see anything. There are often very cold winds and it is difficult to stay in the streets for a long time. That’s why we wear warm coats, hats and scarves not to freeze（冻结）.

I like winter when the weather isn’t very cold. Then we go outdoors, make snowmen, play snowballs, skate or ski. But sometimes I hope to live in a warm country.

Have you ever asked yourself this question, “Which books I need to read? Fiction or Non-Fiction?” To help you answer this question, I would like to explain the differences between the two kinds of books.

A fiction book is something not happened in real life. It can be a novel, a fairy tale, a short story or a play. Fiction writers are usually good at imagining. For example, they always try to tell you something through a story; they make readers think about their ideas. They usually write about love, family or life in their books. When you read fiction, you see the world through a character’s eyes. Looking at the world from a different way helps you get opinions about things around you.

Non-fiction books usually talk about a truth or an opinion about real things. It mainly includes informational books, biographies (传记), research, or history. Non-fiction helps readers get knowledge (知识) about the world. This knowledge is helpful for reading fiction books. Also, reading non-fiction helps readers understand problems and find ways to solve them. You can also learn useful lessons from successful people in the book.

3 . Life in the future will be very different.

Houses will be greener because home appliances (电器) in the houses will use soar energy (太阳能). Fridges will talk to people and tell them what temperature to keep the food at and they will tell people when there isn’t enough food or drink.

Everyone will have robots at home. ________ For example, they will clean, they will go shopping when the fridge tells them to, they will help look after the children, they will drive parents to their place of work.

Every person in a house will own a computer. Students won’t go to school any more. Instead they will stay at home with a virtual (虚拟的) teacher. They will have lessons on their computers every day, including (包括) weekends.

I think people will have more free time. They will travel more, but they won’t travel by car. Everyone will use electric buses and trains with robot drivers. I think people will go on holiday to the moon in space rockets. People also will travel to other planets if they’re very rich. Space traveling will be the most popular kind of holiday in the future.

Bollywood

What is Bollywood?

Bollywood is the name of the Indian film industry (产业). It’s nearly the same as Hollywood, but the “B” comes from Bombay, the biggest city in India, now called Mumbai (孟买). Bollywood makes nearly 800 films a year: that’s twice the number of films made in Hollywood. The films are made very quickly and some actors are in three or four films at the same time.

Bollywood: Past

People made the first Bollywood film in 1899. At first, the films were silent and then in the 1930s they made films with sound. The first color film started in the 1950s, which showed the beauty of the Indian clothes and costurnes (装束) often worn in Bollywood productions. Traditional Bollywood films included a lot of singing and dancing, but action films also became popular in the 1970s. At first people only watched the films in India, but since the year 2000 Bollywood films have become popular all over the world.

Bollywood: Present

Mumbai is the home of the Indian film industry. Thousands of people work there as actors, cameramen, directors and extras (临时演员). It is common now for directors to make Bollywood films in other countries, such as the US, France and China as Indian audiences (观众) are very interested in other countries. However, international cinema has also come to Bollywood.

Bollywood: Future

The future is good. Big American film companies (公司) like Warner Bros, and Twentieth Century Fox are opening offices in India. This means more color, more dancing and definitely (确定地) more Bollywood.

Christmas Day (圣诞节), December 25th, is perhaps the happiest day of the year for most English children. They know that they will get gifts, just as they do on their birthdays. But at Christmas most of them will have more interests. They will see what their brothers or sisters have received (已经收到). They are also happy to give gifts. It is often as happy as they themselves receive (收到) them.

English children always hang a stocking (长袜) at the end of the bed on Christmas Eve (前夕). In the morning they play with the new toys. At lunch, there is a Christmas cake. Usually their parents will put a coin (硬币) or two inside it and part of the fun is to see who finds it. But every year English hospitals receive (收到) many telephone calls from some parents. Quite a few children often notice (注意) the coins only after they have eaten them.

9 . Amazing China(《厉害了，我的国》)is a 90-minute documentary. It records the country’s great developments over the past seven years. The film hit China’s big screen on March 2,2018 and it soon became the country’s most popular documentary.

Amazing China introduces some of the most important developments that China has made since 2012. In the documentary, we can see the world’s largest radio telescope FAST. It took China five years, from 2011 to 2016, to build the telescope in the mountains of Guizhou Province. People called it Tianyan, which means “the eye of heaven” in Chinese. The documentary also shows us the world’s largest maritime drilling rig Blue Whale 2, and the development of 5G mobile technology.

Amazing China also records the stories of normal people, such as engineers who do building work, grass-roots officials who help poor people become rich, and workers who try to make use of new technology in their factories.

“This documentary not only shows what China has achieved,but also tells us about the hard-working people who made these achievements,” said Li Jianwen, a moviegoer in Qingdao, Shandong Province.

10 . Imagine that you are driving down a road late at night. You look to the side of the road and find that there is a car accident. There are people in the car, and they, are probably hurt. What would you do in that situation? Would you ignore (忽视) the people and keep driving? Or would you stop your car and try to help them?

In the past, most people didn’t think of it as a problem. They would stop to help the injured without thinking twice. But people think differently now. Lots of people don’t want to give help. One of the reasons is that sometimes they might hurt the people they are trying to save, and the injured might sue (控告) them. Sometimes, the people who try to help have to pay lots of money just for doing good to others. Many people do not want to get sued for being nice. So they ignore others in need of help.

Because so many people are afraid of getting into trouble, a few countries have passed a special law. The law provides protection for people who try to help others. Thanks to the law, the injured can’t sue anyone who gives a helping hand, In countries with this law, people are not afraid to help out anymore.
