Smartphones have become an important and necessary part of our daily lives. However, the overuse of smartphones may cause younger students’ eye problems and stop them paying attention to their studies.

In China, primary and middle school have had more rules to limit students’ mobile phone use at school since January. Those who require their phones for some reasons must get their parents’ and teachers’ emission (允许) and hand their phones over during class time, in some schools, there is a box out of the classroom for specially storing students’ phones. This is obviously good for improving students’ focus on study and fighting addiction (瘾) to the internet.

According to a repot, China had 175 million internet users under the age of 18 in 2019, with 74 percent having their own mobile phones. This is worrying, as long-time use of smartphones harms children’s eyesight, neck and even the brain. Besides, spending too much time on the phone will take their attention away and prevent them from learning.

1. Everyone needs a smartphone because it’s __________ and __________ in our daily lives.
2. In China, mobile phones __________ not __________ to carry to schools freely since January.
3. Students can’t go to school with their smartphones __________ their parents and teachers __________.
4. A way to limit students’ phone use is to put a __________ to __________ them out of the classroom.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了一群志愿者在一个洞穴里待了40天的实验。

2 . Fifteen volunteers have come out a difficult situation from a cave (洞穴) in the southwest of France after spending 40 days without clocks, phones, or sunlight for a human isolation experiment. The group had no communication with the outside world and was not able to use any electronic devices.

Eight men and seven women were grouped to live in the cave as part of a $ 1.4 million project called Deep Time, which set out to explore the limits of human ability to gradually change their behaviour and attitudes in the new situation. The experiment ended after 40 days.

During their time in the cave, the volunteers slept in tents and made their own electricity with a bike since there was no natural light. They also got water from a well (井) 146 feet below the earth. Since there was no sunlight, the team had to follow their biological clocks to know when to sleep, eat, or do daily tasks. To no one’s surprise, they quickly lost their sense of time.

One of the volunteers said he thought he had been underground for 23 days. Another volunteer said he ran 10-kilometer circles in the cave to stay fit. And he couldn’t wait to leave the cave. But other volunteers felt differently, with two-thirds saying they wanted to stay in the cave for longer. Some even thought it was as if they could press pause and stop to live.

During their time in the cave, scientists carefully watched and checked the volunteers including their sleeping patterns, social activities and cognitive functions (认知功能). The experiment will help scientists understand how human brains can help people adapt (适应) to serious living conditions in new situations.

4 . 根据短文内容,用符合语义及语法规则的词填空,每空一词。

It is common to experience culture shock when living in a foreign country for a certain period of time. Culture shock is the uncomfortable feeling of uncertainty that many people experience when they live in other surroundings (环境). It is a quite natural part of being used to a new environment.

Some good ways to successfully reduce and overcome culture shock are to read about the place where you will be staying and the things you will be doing. If possible, speak with someone who has already lived in the new environment.

Once you are there, keep in mind that people and customs may be very different from what you are used to. If you have realized the difficulties and misunderstandings that may happen to you, you will keep a cool head, and keeping an open mind will allow you to find ways of dealing with those problems that may appear.

If it is possible, try your best to talk with the local people and ask them questions Don’t try to isolate (孤立) yourself, even if it is within a group of people from your own country. Local people will generally be pleased to introduce you their culture and willing to answer questions. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. When you want to learn something from local people, they are usually willing to share their culture with you.

Most importantly, keep a sense of humor! Don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t know what to do in a social situation. Laugh at yourself and others will laugh with you. Most people will admire your wisdom and effort to understand their ways, especially if you have no idea of small cultural differences.

文章大意:本文是一篇科普文章,向读者介绍鱼类是否会感到口渴以及它们是如何来调节自己的生理功能。

7 . From goldfish to sharks, fish of all sizes have lived on Earth for hundreds of millions of years. But do they ever get thirsty?

The answer is yes! Some fish do, at least. But there is a big difference between fish that live in saltwater and ones that live in freshwater.

Bony fish have some salt concentration(含盐量)in their bodies. For bony fish in saltwater, their concentration is lower than the water they live in. Through osmosis(渗透作用)these fish will lose lots of water through their bodies. In order to make up for this loss, they drink lots of water, so it’s easy to say that they can be thirsty. Although drinking saltwater is never a good idea for humans, fish can drink it because they can get rid of the salt through their gills(鳃).

But sharks are an exception. Sharks can make their salt concentration match the water around them. They do this by building up urea(尿素)in their blood, so they probably don’t get very thirsty. But blood with a high salt concentration can also be bad. The high concentration means sharks won’t do very well in freshwater—water can enter the sharks’ bodies by osmosis and even cause them to explode!

Freshwater fish, on the other hand, are unlikely to become thirsty. Because they live in a less salty environment, they have a different problem: water goes inwards and dilutes(冲淡)their blood. Freshwater fish therefore need to get rid of this extra water. So now we know that saltwater fish can become thirsty and drink water, while freshwater fish will avoid drinking but pee(小便)a lot.

1. What’s the main idea of this story?

3. Why are Sharks mentioned in the fourth paragraph?
A.To prove that they are the most unusual creatures in the sea.

5. Where can you find this story in?

9 . Facial recognition technology(人脸识别技术) is widely used today. For example, police use it to search for bad guys(家伙). It’s also used to unlock phones or doors.

Now, a similar technology, known as facial detection(探测), is entering a new field: the business of advertising.

Such systems are going through tests in a small number of stores. One facial detection system can tell a person’s “happiness” or “fear” level. That helps businesses see how people feel as they look at products or advertisements in the store. Another system can detect whether someone is wearing eyeglasses. If so, stores can send advertisements for new glasses to him.

Facial detection technology is also placed inside some large advertising boards. Cameras in those boards can detect information like people’s ages and five levels of feelings-from “very happy” to “very unhappy”.

Supporters of the technology say it could improve buyers’ experience by showing products they might like or by offering them products at lower prices.

Some are against the idea of using such systems. Pam Dixon, the head of a privacy(隐私) group, is one of them. She thinks the strange actions may cause something unfair. For example, a business could raise the price of a product according to a person’s age and feelings.

However, one store testing the technology explained they wouldn’t store people’s information like names or ages. And the advertising board system maker said it didn’t keep any personal information or record any videos.

1. Facial detection technology can tell people’s ______ according to the passage.
