4 . Here are the Best Inventions of 2023. Some of these help us solve problems. Others make life easier, or more fun.
a. Easy Walking These might look like skates, but they’re actually battery-powered shoes with wheels. They let you walk normally—just faster and more easily. Moonwalkers, made by Shift Robotics, use AI to control when you’re speeding up or slowing down. |
b. A Drive to Fly There are plenty of flying cars being developed, but not many look like, well, a car. “We started calling everything a flying car,” says Jim Dukhovny. He’s the CEO of Alef Aeronautics. The company’s Model A is a two-seat, all-electric and four-wheel car with a flight range (航程) of 110 miles. |
c. Clean Water There are people all over the world without safe drinking water, often in war places or after natural disasters. Lifestraw Max may be a solution. It strips water of bacteria (细菌), parasites (寄生虫), and viruses (病毒). “The system attaches (连接) to an existing water supply and cleans 40 gallons of water in an hour.” says LifeStraw’s brand officer, Tara Lundy. |
d. The Language of Song Now you can take music lessons on a smartphone by DLG app if you are really interested in music. You can learn more than 200 popular pieces of music, from nursery rhymes (童谣) to symphonies (交响乐). “You don’t need natural talent to learn music well”, Karen Chow says. Dear Li Na,
I am glad to know about Fuzhou in your letter. Fuzhou is really a wonderful place that I look forward to visiting one day. And I want to tell you something about my hometown, Hubei. Look at the house in the picture. Do you know anything about it?
It is Suspended Building of Tujia Nationality (土家族吊脚楼). There are many houses of this kind in my hometown. Usually they have two floors. On the first floor, there are no rooms for people because it is for pigs, cows, chickens, ducks, sheep, dogs and so on. Tujia people always put the firewood on the first floor, too. And they use it to cook. People live on the second floor. The living room is in the center of the house. It is very big. It is for dinner and meeting friends. On the right and left sides of the house, there are some bedrooms. The kitchen and the bathroom are usually at the back of the house.
In my hometown, you can see this kind of houses here and there. But now, young people don’t build them again. Some of the them are very old and are falling down (倒塌). The government (政府) are trying to keep them well because they are the wonderful culture (文化) of Tujia nationality.
Yours,
Xiang Jun

Happy Rain on a Spring Night
Good rain knows its time right;
It will fall when comes spring.
With wind it steals in night;
Mute, it moistens each thing.
O’er wild lanes dark cloud spreads;
In boat a lantern looms.
Dawn sees saturated reds;
The town’s heavy with blooms.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
When Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu (712-770) wrote this poem, he was living in Chengdu. Sometimes he went to farm in the field. The poem shows his care for farmers.
The very first word, “good”, shows the poet’s joy and love for the spring rain. The rain is good indeed, as it “knows” the right time to come. Here the poet uses personification (拟人), as if the rain were smart enough to know that it should come in time for the farmer’s busy plowing (农耕) season.
When the rain comes, it appears during the night. Unlike the thunder (雷) and lightning of summer storms, the quiet spring rain makes its contributions (贡献) without being known.
In the night sky, the clouds look dark and heavy, showing that there will be enough rain during the night. Then the poet imagines: tomorrow morning, all of the flowers in the city will bloom (盛开) after the rain.
