1 . People call the Chinese diving (跳水) team a “dream team”. It has been a world-class team since the days of Fu Mingxia back in the early 1990s. It still has a bright future these days with Quan Hongchan, 14, a new diving star.
Quan was the youngest member of the Chinese team at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but she wowed the world by getting perfect 10s three times to win the women’s 10-meter dive. This surprised not only the whole team, but also Quan herself. “I’ve never thought of beating a few world champions (冠军) in the match,” Quan said. “I just saw the competition as training. To be brave and just go jumping.”
People thought Quan was born with great talent in diving, but Quan didn’t think so. “I just dived every day. Each day, I needed to practice about seven hours, and some days I practiced for 10 hours,” she told China Daily. And she remembered how it felt when she started to learn diving at the age of 7. “It was so much fun,” she said. However, it takes more than just interest for a beginner to become successful. “If I stop training for a day or two, I feel scared when I get back on the 10-meter board. A diver needs to practice every day and try her best every day,” she added.
In fact, Quan was born in a poor family in Guangdong in 2007. Her mother was badly ill and she worried about her very much. She decided to do all her best for her mother even when she was at an early age, which touched people all around China.

At the beginning of the 50-minute class, the astronauts showed the new “classroom”, the Wentian lab module (实验舱). They worked and lived there. It became part of China’s space station in July last year.
The astronauts did four interesting experiments (实验) in the microgravity environment. Liu Yang tried drinking mango juice with a two-meter straw and she made it! Another experiment showed that a water ball became “lazy” after a small steel ball was put inside it. Chen Dong made two T-handles “dance” on the space station. The astronauts also invited students to do the experiments on the earth. The students found the differences between space and the earth. “How interesting!” they said.
The astronauts also answered questions from students like “how to become an astronaut” and “what kind of plants they will grow in space in the future”.
It was the first science class from the Wentian lab module and the third “Tiangong Class”. The first and second were given by the Shenzhou-13 members in the station’s Tianhe core module. The classes made a lot of young people fall in love with space science.

4 . A Chinese spacecraft successfully landed on the surface of Mars on Saturday morning (May 15th), marking a historic achievement in China’s space effort and making it the second country in the world to achieve the feat (功绩).
President Xi Jinping, sent a letter soon after the successful landing was announced at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center, expressing congratulations and greetings to all the staff (全体人员).
The letter read that the Tianwen 1 mission has left the nation’s first mark on the Red Planet and is another landmark achievement in the development of China’s space industry.
“Thanks to your courage in the face of challenges and pursuit of excellence, China is now among the leading countries in planetary (行星) exploration,” Xi said in the message. “The country and people will always remember your outstanding achievements.”

So far more than half of the Mars landing experiments conducted by some space countries have failed, which shows that the mission is very difficult. But because of their spirit of pursuit of excellence, each and every step during the entry, descent (下降) and landing processes was done with perfect accuracy.
Tianwen 1’s rover, which is named Zhurong, after an ancient Chinese god of fire, is planned to observe and draw maps of the landing site and to perform diagnostic tests (诊断测试) in the coming days.

9 . Liu Jichen, a student from Tsinghua University, has developed a WeChat (微信) miniprogram called “Clear Plate”. After a meal, users can open the miniprogram and take a picture of their empty plates. Once the picture is recognized by the AI (人工智能), users can collect points and use them to buy gifts or buy charity (慈善) meals and then send them to children in poor rural areas.
In November 2020, Liu and his team, together with other organizations, organized the “Clear Your Plate” program for the third year. It has swept over 1,017 universities across the country.
The idea to develop such a miniprogram came from Liu’s experience in a canteen. In 2017, he found that a restaurant would give dinners who finished off their food a card and offer small gifts after a certain number of cards had been collected.
“Technological innovation (科技创新) is a good way to reduce food waste,” Liu thought. He organized a team of 20 members to work on the project at the end of 2017. To solve the AI’s problem of identifying (识别) photos of empty plates, the team spent half a year collecting over 100,000 samples in canteens and restaurants. In 2018, the miniprogram was officially put into use on Oct. 16th, World Food Day.
“There were so many unknowns in research and development. For our team members, the biggest challenge was whether we were confident enough to complete it,” Liu said. They not only achieved their goal, but now, the mini-program has more than 5 million users, according to Liu. “We hope our efforts can start a new lifestyle among the young by encouraging them to cherish (珍惜) their food and develop the habit of saving food,” Liu added.

10 . Can you believe that one day you can visit other countries without your paper passport (护照)? That might come true. And the paper passport will become history. People may use a new kind of passport called the cloud passport in the future.
It’s reported that Australia will be the first country to use the cloud passport, and Australians can travel without a paper passport between Australia and New Zealand.
How does it work? Australian people’s names, photos and other information will be stored (存储) in a cloud. As a result, passengers will no longer need to carry their paper passports. Each year, tens of thousands of Australian passports are lost or stolen. With the cloud passport, people don’t have to worry about that any more.
Although the cloud passport hasn’t been worked out yet, questions are being asked about the safety of a cloud system that stores people’s information. “The idea of a cloud passport would of course be grounded on safety (以安全为基础). We are proud (自豪的) that we have one of the safest passports in the world.
