1 . Clara Prado has worked as an English teacher for more than twenty years. In a recent interview, she told us her own experience of learning and teaching English.
How did you learn English yourself?
I started learning English when I was about six or seven years old. A new language school opened near my home. I started attending classes twice a week. I enjoyed these classes. During my teenage years, I attended several international youth meetings. I also went to Australia as an exchange student. I learned a lot from communicating with native English speakers.
What’s the best part of teaching English for you?
I have met many wonderful people throughout my career. Teachers are a fun group of people. They often get excited about a challenge. Many teachers are creative. They almost always find a way to make things work. I’ve learned a lot from them.
And then there are the students. There is nothing better in life than to see them realize their dreams and achieve something they have worked hard for.
What suggestions do you always give to your students?
As a language learner, you have to be comfortable with making mistakes. The goal is not to be perfect. It’s to be able to communicate with others. Learning a language can be a lifelong process. No one can learn to speak a language well overnight. You will be speaking just a little more every day.
What challenges do you think learners face today?
I think the biggest challenge today is the unknown. Technology and many other things are changing fast. We have no way of knowing what will happen in 10, 20 or 50 years from now, so how can you prepare yourself or others? Well, you can’t be prepared for everything. But you can equip yourself with creativity and the ability to keep learning throughout your life and to work with others. Most importantly, you must stay strong and carry on.

Education Is the Key
Reporter: Hello, everyone. Besides helping animals in pain, the SPCA also runs a very active education program in schools. Meet Ms Ann Lek, our Education Officer. Her job is to help more people understand animals so that they will be treated (对待) better.
Reporter: What is your job duty in the SPCA, Ann?
Ms Ann Lek: I give talks at schools and in many other places to help people learn more about animals. I pay visits at our shelter once a week to teach people what they should consider before getting a pet. Besides weekly talks and visits, I also help educate the public about responsible pet ownership.Reporter: When did you decide to become an Education Officer?
Ms Ann Lek: I always love animals and want to make this world a better place for them. I started as a volunteer with the organization, when I was still attending university. It is so enjoyable to work with those who feel the same as I do. After volunteering for four years, I wanted to do more. I decided to join them full-time when they needed an Education Officer.Reporter: What is the most unforgettable experience you have met while working for the SPCA?
Ms Ann Lek: Looking after pets and being able to bring them to work! I really appreciate (感激) the fact that I can bring my pets with me into the office when I want to. They’re my joy and give me the energy at work. Being able to bring my dogs or cats to work and having my workmates worry about them and shower them totally makes my day.Reporter: Which misunderstanding of pets would you like to change most?
Ms Ann Lek: I really hate it when people are unhappy when I talk about pets, or when taxi drivers refuse to take me because I’m travelling with my dog. Whenever I speak to them and ask why, they always give the same terrible reason: “They’re dirty.” They work and travel closely with human beings every day and share all kinds of public things, but why should we get worried about contracting (感染) a kind of illness from the friendly neighbourhood pets? So I think education is the key!1. Is Ms Ann Lek an Education Officer in the SPCA?

Don’t worry too much about the results of the speech competition. Just believe in yourself and enjoy it. C. Ask your parents why they don’t like her. Maybe they are just afraid she has a bad influence. D. Teachers and parents might bring you stress, but they just want you to have a good future. So, find goals and study hard. E. Look up the new words you see in a dictionary. Make a plan and remember new words every day. More importantly, have fun. F. I’m sorry to hear your friend has stopped being friendly. Sometimes people change. But that doesn’t mean you should act like her. You should try your best to be kind. G. You can ask your teachers and classmates to help you make progress. When you feel stressed, you can take a deep breath. |
ChatGPT: As an AI(人工智能) language model, I can do many things to help people improve their English. I can offer advice on grammar and vocabulary, help with pronunciation and provide feedback(反馈) on written or spoken English. What’s more, I can take part in conversation with people in English which can help them practice their language skills interestingly and naturally. Would you like me to help you with any problems of your English?
John: No, not at the moment. That sounds even more powerful than some English teachers. So do you think you’ll replace(替代) some human beings in some areas, such as English teachers, news reporters or people who do customer service work?
ChatGPT: No. I don’t think I can replace them completely. Though I can provide useful help in many areas, I am still a machine and there are things only human beings can do. English teaching, news reporting and serving are far more than skills. They are also about feelings, thoughts, cultures and so on. However, I believe that I can be a valuable tool to support and improve the work of human beings in these fields. By working together, better results can be achieved to those we serve.
John: Great. I like your ideas. So my next question is, what advice would you give to human beings in order to be better prepared for the future?
ChatGPT: Good question, John. Here are a few pieces of advice for people to think about. First, develop thinking ability. In a word, instead of copying others’ ideas, you should have your own thoughts. Next, learn to work together with machines. Don’t be afraid of AI, it’s important to know how to work together with machines to improve your own abilities. Then, develop skills only human beings have, like creativity, and empathy(共情). Fourth, keep learning and changing. The world is changing fast and it’s important to stay up to date with the latest development s in technology and other fields. I hope these tips are helpful, John.
