1 . When I was in primary school, I was too weak in French to pass the exam. I often got an “E” or F on my papers. My classmates often laughed at me in class. I often felt sad but could not do anything. But later, a French speech contest changed my life. And it also changed my views on everything.
It was a Wednesday afternoon. My father asked me to take part in a French speech contest. It was a terrible idea! My French grades were always bad.
“Don’t worry, my son. Believe in yourself and you’re sure to win the contest” With my father’s encouragement, I accepted his offer. After that my father and I chose a right topic. Then I practised hard at it. I spent a lot of my spare time practising it again and again in order not to miss a word. Finally, it turned out that my speech was successful. When my French teacher gave me a call and told me I got the first prize, I could hardly believe my ears. And my father was so excited that he couldn’t say a word.
Then everything has changed. When I do anything, I always believe in myself and try my best to do it well.

In order to study black bears, researchers from New Jersey, USA, catch bears and usedrugs to help them go to sleep. Researchers then work out the size and the weight of the bear, take blood to test for diseases, remove a tooth and take it to the lab to find out its age. Fromthese studies, researchers want to find out how many bears live in New Jersey, how long theylive, and how many babies theyproduce.
But in Minnesota, USA, researchers study bears that are completely awake. The bears knowthe researchers' voices and they are not afraid of die research team. With the help of a few grapes
to keep the bears busy, researchers can touch them to check their hearts, look at their teeth, and do other jobs.Researchers can also walk or sit with bears for hours and make videos to learn about their everyday lives.
In both places, the main purpose is the same—to make sure there is a healthy population of black bears. But theresearch methods and the kinds of information that researchers, are able to collect are quite different.

3 . An Activity for Reading By:CCTV Department of Education
This activity is developed by reading experts for you to use with children. Doing the activity with your children helps you develop their reading skills while having fun at the same time. If the reader finishes one book and asks for another, you know you are succeeding!
We wish you spend wonderful hours of reading with children! This summer holiday, we will invite some families to the program Readers to read aloud poems or books you like, and share your reading experience.
Activity:Read to meIt’s important to read to your child, but equally important to listen to them to read to you. What you’ll need:Books at your child’s reading level.
What to do:▲Read good books to your child. Parents who read aloud to their children are developing their interests and skills in reading. Encourage your children to listen, express their ideas and ask questions.
▲Take turns. You read a paragraph and let your child read the next one. If your child becomes easier with reading aloud, you can ask him or her to read a full page.
▲Listen carefully as your child reads. Listening to your child will encourage them to practice reading. Besides, this is another way to enjoy reading together.
▲If your child has trouble reading words, you can help him or her in some ways:
●Ask the child to jump over the word and read the rest, then try to guess the meaning of the missing word.
●Guide your child to use what he or she knows about letter sounds.

Chen wasn't born with this talent. When he was a fourth-grader, he found his brother's paper-folding book. It got him interested in it. Following the 50 steps shown in the book, he made
his first work--a paper elephant within two hours. Since then, he has read many books about paper-folding and practised folding paper in his spare time. So far, his fantasy world has many members, such as monsters and robots. He made his favorite work last year. It was a paper dragon that had almost 2,000 steps.
Chen used to fold paper himself until he met Li Changnan, an eighth-grader in his school who also loved folding paper. They set up a paper-folding club last year. To their joy, their school sponsored it. With the encouragement and the money provided, they had a paper-folding class every Wednesday afternoon. The club soon attracted a lot of students. Now it has more than 20 members. They showed their works and taught other students how to fold paper. On February 14th this year, the club also held a speech for the kids in Wenzhou Children's Library.

Pete showed me his new kitchen, which he put together himself, and his newly-painted walls. I asked him where he got the idea to do these things. He told me that his favourite source (来源) of ideas is a DIY program on TV.
This got me thinking about how popular DIY programs are in the UK. Each main channel (频道) has at least one home or garden makeover show. There are even channels totally on the subject.
I suppose it’s not really surprising that DIY programs are so popular. There are two common sayings in Britain – “an Englishman’s home is his castle (城堡)” and “there’s no place like home” – which show how important our houses are to us. With the social changes of the last ten years or so, many people can’t afford to buy bigger houses. So they are looking at how they can make their house better without spending a lot of money. DIY, clearly, is the perfect choice.

Almost every Chinese person can recite the two lines of the famous poem, “Every grain on the plate comes from hard work(谁知盘中餐,粒粒皆辛苦).” But sadly, many of us don’t actually get the real meaning of these lines: Don’t waste food.
A CCTV program, News One Plus One, reported that the food Chinese people throw away every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year.
Do we have too much food? Of course not. According to the UN World Food Program, there were 925 million hungry people around the world in 2010, especially in developing countries. Six million children die of hunger every year.
Chinese people are well known for being hospitable(好客的) and generous. Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food on the table.
Luckily, a number of people have realized the importance of saving food. Last November, Li Hong, a waitress in a restaurant in Nanjing, got fired because she took some leftover food home for her son. Many people stood by her side and criticized(批评) the waste of food.
What should we do in our daily lives to waste less food? Here are some tips:
1. Do not order too much in a restaurant. Only order as much as you want to eat. If you cannot eat all the food you ordered, take the rest of it home.
2. Don’t be too picky(挑剔的) about food. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it.
3. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy too much, especially for vegetables and fruit.
